On this day 149 years ago the 20th Massachusetts would march into the
West Woods with other regiments of the 2nd corps where they would be
ambushed by D.H. Hills men. The regiment would suffer 20 killed, 84
wounded and 26 captured and missing for a total of 130 casualities.
Among the soldiers killed in the regiment was Surgeon Edward Revere who
was the grandson of the Midnight Rider Paul Revere.

http://links.namgclubs.net/ctt?kn=15&ms=NTAwOTIzOQS2&r=NTgzNDMwMTI1OQS2&b=0&j=MTg2MzEyMDQ5S0&mt=1&rt=0 There's no shortage of books about the American Civil War from the historian's point of view. But what was it like to live through the conflict day by day?

Highly decorated career military man Robert E. Denney, who served in Korea and Vietnam, spent the rest of his life pursuing a lifelong passion for the Civil War following his retirement. The Civil War Years: An Illustrated Chronicle of the Life of a Nation is his collection of firsthand accounts—from soldiers on the front as well as voices back at home—drawn from books, letters, and diaries. The volume also includes an enormous number of period photos, drawings, maps, and sheet music, as well as representations of surviving war paraphernalia.

These 150 years later, interest in the defining conflict in our country's history is rising to an all-time peak. What better way to understand those events than through the eyes and words of those who lived them?

Coly, I think you meant the 150th Anniversary. At any rate, anyone
living in the Loudoun County, VA area or close enough to get there should
make plans to attend the first ever on site reenactment of the battle.
Check it out. As it should be the 20th Mass Discussion Group's very own Jim
Morgan will be doing some of the commentary. Check it out:

Stephen Crane Dead

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

BADENWEILER, Baden, June 5.--Stephen Crane, the American author and war correspondent, died here to-day, aged thirty years.

Stephen Crane stepped early into literary notice because of his power in word painting. "The Red Badge of Courage," his first published novel, drew approving comment from various quarters, and some speculation regarding the author. In England the opinion was advanced that he must be a veteran soldier, since no one who had not been under fire could so well describe a battle. Mr. Crane dismissed this theory by saying that he got his ideas from the football field.

After this introduction, in 1895, to book readers, Mr. Crane issued a book called "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets," which had been written by him when he was about sixteen years old and printed privately. In the five years between these books he occupied himself with miscellaneous newspaper and sketch work in this city, printing among other things verses entitled "The Black Riders, and Other Lines." He printed "George's Mother" in 1896, and "The Little Regiment," a war story, and "The Third Violet," in 1897, his books by that time having vogue both here and abroad.

"The Red Badge of Courage" was written while he was in New York writing sketches for the various newspapers and in very indifferent financial circumstances. His inspiration for it came from an artist friend whose studio he was visiting. Crane had been reading a war story in a current magazine, which he finally tossed aside in disgust, saying that he could write a better story himself.

"Why don't you do it, then?" said his friend.

"I will," said Crane, snatching up his hat and leaving the room. The next three days he secured all the books he could find on the civil war in the various public libraries and read carefully the accounts of several battles. He knew little or nothing about the civil war when he started, but when he had finished his studies he was thoroughly imbued with local color. The story which he produced was refused by all the publishers, but was afterward accepted in a condensed form for $90 by a newspaper syndicate.

When the Graeco-Turkish war broke out he was in London. He

Just wanted to drop a note to the members of the group that I attended the 150th
Ball Bluff anniversary reenactment with my group and we went into the field as
Company C 20th Mass Infantry.

the battle was fought on the original ground, with our campsite about a mile
away at Morven park which was a camp site area during the Antietam Campaign in
1862.

No real casualties happened, but there were lots of heavy hearst when we were
rounded up as prisoners...

PIctures have been posted..

I got a call about this new series today and looked it up on "my Google Machine"
and found the following press release:

(Culver City, Ca.) 3net, the joint venture 24/7 3D network from Sony, Discovery
and IMAX - will debut FIELDS OF VALOR: THE CIVIL WAR, the world's first native
3D war documentary, Saturday, December 3 (9PM ET/PT), it was announced today by
Tom Cosgrove, President & CEO of 3net. In addition, 3net, along with Discovery
Communications' sister networks Velocity and Military Channel, will offer a
3D/2D simulcast of the premiere episode Sunday, December 4 (10PM ET/PT).

The epic, four-part 3net original miniseries - the most ambitious 3D project
ever produced for television - will transport viewers back in time, retelling
the war's most pivotal moments both on and off the battlefields from the unique
perspective of both sides of the historic conflict. The series utilizes
carefully selected stereoscopic stills from the period - recently released by
the Library of Congress - and shown for the first time ever to television
audiences in their native 3D format.

In addition, FIELDS OF VALOR: THE CIVIL WAR features a cast of thousands for the
penultimate battle scenes, unique "tableau form" style 3D recreations and 3D
graphic effects to bring to vivid life the men of the 20th Massachusetts and the
1st Virginia as they leave their homes and loved ones, prepare for ensuing
battle and plunge headlong into the history's most brutal domestic conflict.
Intimate accounts of the brave men on the front lines are told through
paralleling stories from each side of the war, giving audiences a unique insight
into the beliefs, struggles and passions of those involved from both the North
and South.

program but I did watch the trailer on the link you provided and it does
look interesting. Is there anywhere I can watch it online?

On December 11, 1862 the 20th Massachusetts along with the 7th Michigan
and 19th Massachusetts would cross the Rappahannock River under fire and
establish a beachhead which would become a first in American military
history to accomplish this feat. Two days later the 20th Massachusetts
would fight on Marye's Heights however they would not be able to seize
the heights. By the end of the Fredericksburg Campaign the casualty rate
for the regiment would be close to 70% which was the highest of any
regiment at Fredericksburg.

I only saw the 1st Ep. it went up to Ball's Bluff, it wasn't bad, better than the usual fare from the Military/History Channel.
I'll watch the rest on On Demand.
As for DVD, what doesn't get made into one. When I watch the rest I'll give a more detailed account but nothing in EP horribly outraged me.

Legendary Civil War submarine H.L. Hunley unveiled for first time

The Confederate Civil War vessel H.L. Hunley, the world’s first successful combat submarine, was unveiled in full and unobstructed for the first time on Jan. 12, capping a decade of careful preservation.

A press r

elease from the Friends of the Hunley (www.hunley.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the H.L. Hunley complete her historic journey home, shares the following:

Seeing the Hunley has never been easy. For over a century, the submarine was hidden by the depths of the sea. Since the Hunley was recovered in 2000, she has been obscured by a steel truss mega-structure that was used to lift her from the ocean. On Jan. 12, that changed and the Hunley is completely visible for the first time since 1864.

The 50-foot, 17,000-pound truss that has long been a view-blocking appendage sitting on top of the Hunley was carefully removed by experts in what was at times a delicate procedure. Though necessary for the Hunley’s safety, the truss has also completely obstructed a full viewing of the submarine until now.

Enhancing the visitor experience is only one of the benefits of today’s big move. “Separating the truss from the Hunley represents the official beginning of the final conservation treatment of the Hunley,” said Mike Drews, director of Clemson’s Warren Lasch Conservation Center, home to the legendary submarine and other significant pieces of American history.

Next, modifications will begin on the Hunley’s 90,000-gallon conservation tank. The tank – which currently holds chilled fresh water to stabilize the submarine as she awaits treatment – needs to be altered in order to accommodate the chemicals necessary for conservation.

Scientists hope to have the submarine soaking in the chemical bath by the end of this year. The solution is designed to slowly leach out the salts that infiltrated the Hunley’s iron during her 136-year stay on the ocean floor. Those salts are toxic to iron and threaten the very survival of the world’s first successful combat’s submarine.

After several months of soaking in the solution, the layer of concreted sand, shell, and silt that encases the Hunley will be carefully removed, allowing for a faster pace of conservation.

Though it is no longer needed to support the Hunley, the steel truss will continue to have a role in the Project. It will be stored and used in the future museum display of the Hunley. “The large steel structure was an integral part of the cutting edge technological achievement in the Hunley’s recovery. It will be preserved and placed in the planned Hunley Museum to tell future generations about the technology that encompassed every aspect of the Hunley story from the submarine itself, to its recovery, and to its conservation and preservation,” said Senator Glenn McConnell, chairman of the Hunley Commission.

The Hunley Project

On the evening of February 17, 1864, the H. L. Hunley became the world’s first successful combat submarine by sinking the USS Housatonic. After signaling to shore that the mission had been accomplished, the submarine and her crew of eight mysteriously vanished. Lost at sea for over a century, the Hunley was located in 1995 by Clive Cussler’s National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA).

The innovative hand-cranked vessel was raised in 2000 and delivered to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, where an international team of scientists are at work to conserve the submarine for future generations and piece together clues to solve the mystery of her disappearance. The Hunley Project is conducted through a partnership with the Clemson University Restoration Institute, South Carolina Hunley Commission, Naval Historical Center, and Friends of the Hunley.

About Friends of the Hunley

The goals of the Friends of the Hunley are: to recover the remains of the brave men who gave their lives and honor them with the proper burial that they earned; to solve the mystery of that first ever submarine attack in 1864; and to conserve one of the greatest, most sought-after artifacts in the history of naval warfare.
