+Those of you traveling to/through Ontario should know that new traffic fines
came into effect for 2010.

"They are astronomical, they are dramatic and they are here to stay. At least
for now.

Starting New Year's Day, the fines for major traffic infractions doubled,
tripled and in some cases even quadrupled..."

+Those of you traveling to/through New Jersey should know that new teen plate
decals will become effective in May 2010.

"Teen drivers throughout New Jersey will be affixing two detachable decals to
their license plates starting in May, by order of the state of New Jersey."

"AAA in New Jersey spokesman David Weinstein, who served on the state Teen
Driver Study Commission that recommended decals to help police enforce the
Graduated Driver License law, reiterated his view that Kyleigh's Law will help

"Kyleigh's Law will (require) holders of a special learner's permit or

09NR38 - MRF News Release - Washington Update

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
16 December 2009

Contact: Jeff Hennie, MRF V.P. of Government Relations & Public Affairs
jeff@...

WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Obama, on Friday, announced that he has nominated
David L. Strickland to be the new administrator of the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Strickland has served for eight years on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee
on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. As the Senior Counsel for the Consumer
Protection Subcommittee, he is currently the lead staff person for the oversight
of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Federal Trade
Commission, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He has also served as
the lead Senate staff person in the formulation of the Corporate Average Fuel
Economy (CAFE) reforms and standards included in the Energy Independence and
Security Act of 2007, and in a staff leadership role in the reauthorization of
the NHTSA in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity
Act of 2005 (SAFETEA-LU).

His work in advising Commerce Committee members led to the inclusion of several
significant vehicle safety mandates, including the electronic stability control
mandate for every passenger vehicle. Mr. Strickland advised Congressional
members on safety reforms and funding increases for the NHTSA's seatbelt and
drunk driving grant programs. Mr. Strickland earned his J.D. degree at Harvard
Law School, and his B.S. Degree in Communication Studies and Political Science
at Northwestern University.

Strickland's nomination was the subject of a Senate Hearing yesterday where he
faced no opposition.

The MRF looks forward to continue to work with Mr. Strickland once he is
approved by the full Senate. We hope he takes a sensible approach to motorcycle
safety.

2010 grant money

The last round of the 2010 grant money was dispersed recently. $7 Million

On another note

It has got virtually nothing to do with motorcycling but many riding
organizations have kept a close eye on the Patriot Act. The Patriot act is a
federal surveillance program designed to give greater abilities to federal
investigators when working on international terrorism issues. Some fear that
giving the ability to the feds to intercept private information will eventually
be used on other groups of individuals, not just terrorists.

Three key provisions are expiring at the end of this year and lawmakers are
looking to include their extension in an upcoming Omnibus. An omnibus is giant
piece of legislation that lawmakers are unlikely to vote against. Congress
typically includes controversial provisions in omnibus legislation and the
patriot act is controversial to say the least.

One of the expiring provisions allows the government to seek orders from a
special federal court for "any tangible thing" that it says is related to a
terrorism investigation, such as business records. Another allows the government
to seek court orders for roving wiretaps on suspected terrorists who shift their
modes of communication.

The third provision, which the Justice Department told lawmakers in September
has never been used, allows the government to apply to the special court for
surveillance orders on "lone wolf" terrorists not necessarily connected to a
larger organization.

The MRF has no position on the Patriot Act.

AMA-Chartered OrganizersAre Urged to Make Their Voices Heard

AMA Organizer Services would like to remind allAMA-chartered promoters and
promoting clubs that online elections for AMA CongressDelegates opened Dec. 1.
To date, more than half of eligible charters haveregistered their votes, easily
surpassing last year's overall total vote, butthere remain more than 40 percent
of eligible voters who have yet to make theirvoices heard.

Incumbent delegates and nominated challengers are listed on the ballots,
butchartered organizers are not solely limited to those choices. Each
ballotallows for a "write-in" candidate as well. Write-in candidates mustbe
current AMA members and voters must use the candidate's full name --
nonicknames, please.

The candidate receiving the highest number of votes will beselected as a
Congress Delegate, and the runner-up will be the designatedAlternate Delegate
for a two-year term beginning in January 2010. In the caseof a tie, the
incumbent will receive the AMA Congress President's vote as atiebreaker.

Each AMA-chartered promoter and promoting club may vote forone candidate on each
ballot question available to them after they log in.AMA-chartered organizers
received their login information by mail inNovember. Organizers are encouraged
to contact Dave Hembroff at dhembroff@... or at AMAextension 1202 with
any AMA Congress election questions or login issues. The AMA Congress Delegate
election will remain open until Dec. 31, withresults announced in January 2010.

Once every generation, we get a chance for a new Motorcycle CrashCausation
Study. The last one, by Harry Hurt, was published in 1981. Itmade
recommendations that led to always-on headlights and improvementsin rider
training. These were major factors in the one-third reductionin motorcycle
fatalities between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s.

InOctober 2009, US DOT announced a new Crash Causation Study authorizedby the
SAFETEA-LU bill. The scope of the study has since been trimmedto only 300
crashes, far fewer than the 900 to 1200 originallyrequired, which is what all
experts agree is needed for goodstatistics. There are full details about this
issue at BikeSafer.comCrash Study Petition Fact Page, including the official
statements,stakeholders and background information.

Bikers need this newstudy because 5290 bikers die yearly in crashes, we don't
fullyunderstand why, and we need good crash causation information to ridesafely
and inform public policy. The new study has the potential tofind the current
causes of crashes, and identify successful ridingstrategies that might work for
us all.

We believe that thestakeholders need to figure out a way to use our tax dollars
wisely andensure the study samples 900 to 1200 crashes, as originally required.

Pleasesign the petition at BikeSafer.com Crash Study Petition. Bikers have
astake in this outcome, and we need to have a voice in the issue. If youcould
forward this to your mailing list, it would help get the word out.

...now these guys are (chuckle) bikers!

No one will deny that the term "Biker" was initially applied to a hard core
minority of the motor cycling public who (as the saying goes) "...Ate, Slept,
Lived, Loved, and Dreamed Motorcycles..."

When i was a youngster these were guys and gals who, as the song goes, "...Wore
A Black Leather Jackets With AN Eagle On The Back..."

Regardless of what they called themselves, these people were the rugged
individuals who applied their motorcycles to their every day lives. Moreover,
they pushed their skill, endurance, and their machines to the limit.

Take a good look at these pictures. They are the Standard....... the metric by
which the term "Biker" was originally defined.

No matter who we are, what we ride or when we ride it, if we call ourselves
"Bikers" this is the legacy to which we aspire.

So, now the question we each have to ask ourselves is simply this....... "how do
i measure up ?"

Don't know about you, but me....i'm humble by these pictures.

WARNING: The pictured reality could put a damper on "contemporary Biker"
self-esteem..... :-)

On Thanksgiving Day, as most of America was watching football, the Weber
household was sitting around talking about bikes. We started looking though my
dad’s old riding photos. These are so great that I had to share some with all
of you…

My dad and some friends were Adventure Riders to the hilt back in the 1950’s.
Sunday rides were the thing for these guys, with the occasional jaunt to Mexico
City or somewhere thrown in for fun. First let’s introduce the characters.
Here's the clan filling up for gas somewhere near Fort Collings, CO. We've got
them from left to right:
Jerry Francis, 1950 Harley 74
Mike Sadusky, 1950 Harley 74
Warren Weber (my dad), 1950 Harley 74
Wendell Rea, 1942 Harley 45 CI. Notice the front knobby!

I guess the 1950 Harley 74 was 'all that', Just like the GS is (supposedly)
these days. Seems pretty popular anyhow...

Here's the 'usual suspects' again taking a morning break on a nice Sunday ride.

One Sunday ride took 'em to the top of Mount Evans, elevation 14,264. This was
back in the day before it was paved all the way to the top. It was, however,
paved here if it hadn't been for the snow. I was recently in a similar situation
on my Rally Twin coming over Pearl Pass. I thought it was touchy enough, and I
didn't have a FOOT CLUTCH!!! Yikes!

Yet another 1952 Sunday ride ventured up Arapahoe Pass - it's near Eldora,
Colorado and is now all wilderness. Stupid lousy rotten environmental freaks,
but I digress… (sigh)

The clan started out from my Dad's house in Wheat Ridge, which is a stone's
throw from Golden, CO. They usually left about 8:00 a.m. If you didn't arrive on
time, they'd leave you. Hard knocks. They headed up to Boulder, CO and followed
the nice, twisty, scenic Boulder Canyon to Nederland. From there they headed
through the town of Eldora and up Arapahoe pass.

Now some things never change. There's always that one person in the group that
either insists that they absolutely positively know where to go, or that it "not
that bad". In this case, the group ended up venturing down this:

Turned out that this the wrong way (DUH!). The Harley guys actually let the
english bike riders be guinea pigs on this part of the ride. Must've been one of
those hot-headed british riding know-it-alls that suggested it in the first
place...

After some back tracking and de-mudding operations, they finally found the right
trail and made it to the top at 11905 feet elevation. Nice day!

I also think these guys could've invented the "No Fear" logo. I have fear when
it associates a 750 lb hard tail with a stream crossing on a trail. These guys
really deserve some respect for being able to pull this off. Or they deserve to
be taken away in straight jackets, I'm not really sure.

Not that they didn't dab once or twice. OK, maybe they dabbed about 100 times,
but they still made it across. Now it's time to take a break and dry out.

Here’s a portrait of my dad taken in 1951, just before the start of a nice
ride. Notice the cool stylish apparel. Helmet? I don't need no stinking helmet!
Of course, this was pre-head injury days....

These guys also had a lot of fun just playin’ around. Imagine getting a couple
feet (OR MORE!) of air on a 750 HARD-TAIL Harley! This makes you GS-jumpers look
like whimps, with your fancy rear suspension and all. Sheesh!

But the most insane (read: talented) member of the group in the area of piloting
a Harley 74(7) through the air was a fellow named Kenny Erie. If Kenny was alive
today and about 50 years younger, I’m sure he’d be one of the top names in
freestyle!

These guys weren't shy of riding on a bit of snow, either. Here's Mike Sadusky
on his 50 Harley. Man, I really envy this guy's legs. I bet he could straddle
the 950 Adventure-S with his knees bent. Me, on the other hand, can't physically
touch both toes to the ground at the same time. Mike used to drape his legs over
the handle bars to stretch on those long road trips (no joking!). Who needs
hiway pegs?

You’d think these guys would know when to stop. Apparently not…

Good thing Mike has those long legs...

These were taken up by my Dad's cabin on Mt Thorodin. Wanna park, but you're too
lazy to put the side stand down? Just cram it in a snow bank and leave it like
my dad did. Mike and Kenny are in the process of “parking”.

These guys were never short of play time. Once again, Mike's extra long legs
save the day. Well, almost.

And again...

You’re not a real rider unless you can power slide…

So, as it goes on Thanksgiving day you’re supposed to think what you’re
thankful for. I’m thankful for my dad being a nutcase in the 1950’s, buying
my brother Wayne and I Z-50’s in the 70s, and riding every chance I get with
my friends and family!

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Sal,

I made a mistake at the Pre-Sanction... we were the FOURTH Sunday in
August this year, not the third. If the fourth Sunday in August 2010 is
available the Nassau Wings would like to change their date to August 22
instead...
