Workshop on “the Social and Economic History of Diyarbakır and the Region”

International Hrant Dink Foundation, Diyarbakır Institute for Political and Social Research, Diyarbakır Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Directorate for Cultural Affairs announce a workshop on the topic of “the Social and Economic History of Diyarbakır and the Region”. The meeting will take place in Diyarbakır on 12-13 November 2011.

In the course of the 19th century and the first quarter of 20th century the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey have undergone a significant social and economic transformation. While academic interest to study these developments has been quite substantial regarding western provinces of these states, academic curiosity regarding eastern provinces has largely lagged behind. Although eastern provinces certainly experienced similar processes, scholarly works on their economic and social life as well as their transformation are few. Rather, a sharp neglect and amnesia can be observed regarding eastern Anatolia in the 19th and early 20th century. Likewise, records, archives and monographs on its economic and social life, as well as records on the social movements that took place in the region are very limited.

The aim of the workshop is to understand and analyze in detail the social and economic transformations in the Diyarbakır province between 1838 and 1938, and to promote and publicise academic research on the subject.

  • The meeting will be held in Diyarbakır Sümerpark Conference Center;
  • Working languages of the meeting will be English and Turkish;
  • In order to reserve time for Q&A sessions and discussions, each speaker will have 20 minutes for their presentation;
  • Transportation and accommodation expenses of participants from outside Diyarbakır will be covered if institutions they belong to cannot ensure coverage;
  • The meeting is organized from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is open to the participation of researchers working on the history, economic history, sociology, political science and demography of Diyarbakır and its region between 1838 and 1938;
  • Papers that would focus on the interaction between the various communities living in the area at the time are encouraged;
  • Researchers who would like to participate in this meeting should submit a 250-word summary of their papers, along with a CV to the address below:

The aim of the project is to further strengthen the capacity of regional think tanks to operate as arenas for rigorous and independent analysis and to participate in political debate (both domestically and internationally). Projects dealing with domestic issues are strongly encouraged although topics relating to international politics may also be considered. Selected applicants must submit the results of this research in a 15-20-page policy report (in English or Russian) to the project organizers by 17 October 2011 for peer-review. Revised reports must be publicized in individual countries by participating think tanks during October/November 2011.

The project will involve up to 28 project participants from ArmeniaAzerbaijan, Georgia, KazakhstanKyrgyzstanTajikistan, Turkmenistan andUzbekistan. We strongly encourage female researchers to apply. International PhD Program
"Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World" (IPP Transnational)
Commencing on October 1, 2011, at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main

The DAAD-funded International PhD Program Transnational in the Faculty of the Social Sciences is now accepting applications for the winter term 2011/12. The program offers a structured, three-year period of research at a high academic level to graduates of sociology, political science, and anthropology. PhD candidates will profit from an intellectually stimulating and supporting infrastructure that includes special counseling, intense academic supervision, and participation in the "Forum Transnational" with international visiting scholars as well as methods and theory workshops tailored to the needs of the participants. In addition, doctoral candidates will receive support in applying for scholarships and in career planning. Special funding is available for research periods abroad and networking with other PhD candidates in independent doctoral working groups (DocAGs).

The IPP Transnational does not provide PhD scholarships.

The IPP's profile combines three areas of research in a transnational perspective:
    1. Challenges and innovations of democracy
    2. Transformations of the gender order
    3. Biosciences and society

Special German courses and supervision opportunities will be made available for international PhD candidates. The program's working languages are English and German.

The IPP Transnational cooperates with partner universities in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Switzerland, and the United States.

Graduates of sociology, political science, and anthropology both from Germany and abroad can apply who have an above-average university degree (MA, first state examination, Magister, diploma, or the like) and a sound knowledge of English. In addition to the usual application documents (copy of the diploma, CV), applicants must submit a five-page PhD proposal, in either German or English, in line with the IPP Transnational's research design. Furthermore, the application shall include a brief letter of motivation and two letters of reference. More detailed information on the profile of the IPP Transnational is available on the program's Web site at www.gesellschaftswissenschaften.uni-frankfurt.de/ipp_transnational. Further information about the application can be obtained from Dr. Sybille Kster, IPC Social Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, tel.: +49-69-798-23433.

Applications are to be sent by May 15, 2011, to the head of the project

Cordially invites you to attend a lecture on

In Which Language Did Samson Speak?

    by Dr. Cyril Aslanov

Date: 7 April 2011, Thursday (հինգշաբթի)

    Time: 17:00

    Country: Armenia

    City: Yerevan

Venue: Department of Arabic Studies, Yerevan State University, room 320

The story of Samson counted in Judges 13-16 does not  explicitely mention in which language the
Israelite Samson communicated with his Philistine acquaintances. And yet, at the end of the second
millenium BC, the Israelites and the Philistines, though neighboring with each other, belonged to
apparently very different linguistic horizons: the Israelites spoke the Canaanite dialect that eventually
became Hebrew, whereas the Philistines used a non-Semitic language that was probably akin to the
mysterious tongue represented by Minoan linear A.
We would like to investigate the reason why the linguistic communication does not seem to constitute
a problem in Samson's agressive or pacific intercourse with the Philistine Other. Can we consider this
lack of any linguistic obstacle a literary convention that is represented in other parts of the Bible, as
well as in the Greek epic? Or should we assume that in spite of their Cretan origin, the Philistines
were culturally and linguistically assimilated to the Northwest Semitic horizon? Or may be the
Hebrews of that time had a vehicular knowledge of Philistine, the language of the hegemonic nation
in Canaan by then? A close reading of Judges 13-16 as well as data provided by Biblical archeology
could help cast some light on this controversial question.

Cyril Aslanov is Associate Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he teaches Historical
Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. He is interested in language contact and Comparative Linguistics. His
main publications are: Pour comprendre la Bible: la leçon d'André Chouraqui, Monaco, 1999; Le

    Dear friends,

    Kindly find the information below.

    Best,

    Arsen

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear colleague,

I would like to pass on information about the two-year Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Research and Studies on Eastern Europe (MIREES) which might be of interest for your students.

This programme is jointly offered by the University of Bologna, Italy together with the Vytautas Magnus University at Kaunas, Corvinus University of Budapest and St Petersburg State University. The University of Ljubljana is an associate partner that offers additional mobility for students.

The Programme is taught entirely in English (120 ECTS) and MIREES students will spend the first year in Forl (one of the five campuses of the University of Bologna), while in the second year a minimum of 5 months will be spent at Partner Universities (including Ljubljana) and, in particular cases, at other MIREES Associated Universities in the Balkans. A mobility grant is offered to all enrolled students.

The call for application to the MA MIREES will be available as soon as possible. However, the admission requirements and the documents to be provided for application are already available on the MA MIREES' website (http://www.mirees.unibo.it/), as well as detailed information on the teaching plan and the Faculty, and the brochure of the programme.

Two evaluation sessions are scheduled: the first one, with deadline May, 16th 2011, is open to all candidates; the second one, with deadline September, 19th 2011 is only for EU students and non-EU students with equivalent status.

The programme is especially recommended for prospective PhD students. Our best alumni are currently attending doctorate programmes at the Universities of Oxford, Kent, the New School in New York and other prestigious international academic institutions. Moreover, the programme is designed to forge analysts, area experts, consultants and mediators, to meet the needs of research institutes, the European Commission, international agencies, voluntary organizations and NGO's, public administration, managers, corporations and banks located in East-Central Europe and the Balkans or promoting investments in these regions. Most of our alumni have found employment precisely in these fields.

The MIREES programme offers specialized, in-depth knowledge of the post-socialist countries in transition, the new EU member states, and the new East-European neighbour countries to students with a BA in Economics, Politics, International Relations, History, Languages (and Slavic languages in particular), agricultural studies and cultural studies generally.

The programme aims at developing language skills. MIREES offers courses in Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, and Slovak (Hungarian and Lithuanian are also available in the 2nd year), as well as Italian for foreigners as an additional option. The curriculum stresses on interdisciplinary studies in the economics of transition; politics and international relations; history and cultural studies focused on Central, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The international dimension of the programme is enhanced through student mobility, by an international faculty composed of prominent scholars of international repute, and a genuinely international student body. (In the previous cycles we enrolled students from 22 countries including the US, Mexico, Russia, Georgia, Estonia, Macedonia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Germany, United Kingdom, Turkey, Albania, Poland, Armenia, Norway, Slovenia, Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, Slovak Republic, Finland and, of course, Italy.)

Therefore, I would be extremely grateful if you could encourage your BA students to consider applying to this two year programme and, at the same time, if you could forward this message to your colleagues interested in this part of the world.

Perhaps, if we were to choose, education could constitute the backbone of above listed elements. Democratization experiences and obstacles in the South Caucasus: possibilities for change

Democratization refers to the process of making the state “democratic.” It is the process, not the state, of a democratic society. This process applies to states in the process of transition, and in particular to the states of the South Caucasus—Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia in this context. The process of democratization in these states can be described by the cyclic model of democratic transition, which is mostly typical of developing countries in which authorities display a positive attitude towards democracy... Read more

    ANALYSIS

A new look at old principles: making the Madrid document work

The Minsk Group has encouraged Presidents Heydar Aliev and Serzh Sargsyan to agree on the Madrid Principles for almost four years. To date, the leaders have only managed to agree on the preamble.  This article assesses why the Madrid document remains unsigned, and challenges the conventional wisdom that the most divisive issues should be left for last.  Instead, this analysis suggests a modified plan for peace that confronts the most divisive issue first: Nagorno-Karabakh’s status.

The Minsk Group’s Mirage of Progress

Since 1992, the Minsk Group of the OSCE has tried and largely failed to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, yet official statements say that negotiations are moving forward.  The co-chairs often express hope that a peaceful resolution is just beyond the horizon, but those familiar with the issue have grown weary of this mantra... Read more

Sadakhlo neutral zone for Armenian- Azerbaijani contacts: use of trade as a tool for conflict transformation

    By Anna Poghosyan

The collapse of the Soviet empire and the ensuing flare-up of many of its inherent ethnic and political conflicts radically changed the traditional economic ties and geopolitical map of the post-Soviet world. Today, some researchers have pointed out that the best way of solving regional conflicts is trying to link conflicting sides through economic relations and creating an economically integrated area that will benefit all sides in conflict (Champain, 2004, pp. 18–26). The proposed energy supply projects, which are gaining support among Caucasian experts, emphasize the economic priorities of regional cooperation, requiring a new, more pragmatic approach by conflicting political elites to the issues of stability and economic development in the region (Nelson, 2000).

The market in Sadakhlo, a village whose population is predominantly Azerbaijani and is situated on the Georgian-Armenian border, was long known as one of the constant economic hubs in the South Caucasus. Among infrequent ruminations on its character and functional role, it displayed an Armenian-Azeri composition of the trading community, which was a special attraction for many years. This market had existed since the early 1990s and had been actively operating since 1993. Right from the beginning it attracted the unemployed in Armenia and Georgia with its opportunities (Huseynova, 2009, p. 37)...

    About FUTH:
Flying University of Transnational Humanities (FUTH) is an annual summer school and year-round online forum for researchers and graduate students interested in the transnational paradigm of humanistic inquiry.
FUTH takes its name and immediate inspiration from Poland’s Flying University, an underground institution which offered an alternative education outside the remit of state control and government censorship. FUTH is particularly concerned with developing critical understandings that are resistant to the ideological and ideational hegemony of the nation-state and the epistemological and hermeneutic conventions that support it. This does not mean that FUTH seeks to dispense with the ‘national’ and construct a reified ‘transnational’ to replace it or to foster ‘transnationalism’ as an ideological alternative to ‘nationalism’. FUTH aims to free our imaginations from the regime of the nation-state and to offer new ways of thinking about the political, social and cultural order of the world, both past and present.
The Flying University of Transnational Humanities is ‘in session’ once per year for one week, and will normally be held during summer vacation. The host site changes on an annual or bi-annual basis and rotates between partner institutions. FUTH online runs year-round: through its dedicated website, a permanent online space will be provided for interactive discussions. All institutions, departments, and scholars are welcome to participate both offline and online. Each year, FUTH will have a different cross-disciplinary theme around which the sessions will be organized. Renowned scholars from partner and other institutions will be invited to share their ideas in lectures and discussions. The FUTH steering and advisory committees, in conjunction with faculty members of partner institutions and other specialists, will prepare lecture syllabi and reading lists. Student participants are expected to study the readings in advance of each lecture and seminar discussion. A selected number of participants will also have an opportunity to present their ongoing research. All lectures, seminars and presentations will be held in English, in principle, while the possibility of translingual practices will be explored. For the initial three years (2010–2012), the overarching theme of FUTH is ‘borders’. There have been numerous studies on how borders are constructed, negotiated, and policed and how they are simultaneously transgressed, challenged, and renegotiated. Borders are no longer seen simply as physical divisions but also as discursive practices and cultural institutions. However, the multiplicity and hybridity of borders (e.g., national, ethnic, cultural, geographical, gender, political, economic, etc.), as well as their transnational scalability (e.g., local, national, supranational, global, etc.), has yet to be intensively investigated.
The 2nd FUTH will take place at the Research Institute of Comparative History and Culture, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, June 25-29, 2011. Under the subheading of ‘Border-crossing Self’, we hope to gather diverse research and knowledge on border-related (cross-border or bordering) issues such as migration, ethnicity, language, citizenship and gender and open up a forum for discussions on the (un)making of the trans/national self.

International Summer School for Young Researchers – Course for PhD Students

    Date: August 22-27, 2011

Place: Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

    Aims and topic
The Summer School 2011 will deal with Sport and Movement Cultures in a Changing World. Currently, the developments of late modernity reaching from technological progress to global economic and environmental crises have a decisive impact on various areas of sport, e.g. on physical education, sport ideologies and practices, sport business, major sport events, media sport or sport related migration. Health discourses, body and beauty ideals as well as performance and appearance enhancing practices are worldwide issues of debate. These and similar issues are embedded in the discourses in the various countries of the Summer School participants and they are topics of their PhD projects.
Several scientific disciplines with different theoretical approaches, questions and methods are dealing with topics of the Summer School. There has been a considerable amount of research which provides an excellent basis for the discussion of the approaches and studies of both, the experts and the students. The lectures will be based on current discourses, but there will be room for further questions and discussions which will open new perspectives. The course will provide an excellent opportunity for students and lecturers to exchange knowledge about sport developments in their respective countries. The Summer School will provide a forum which enables communication, networking and cooperation among the participants, students as well as lecturers. The course is addressed to PhD students and young researchers and intends to support them in their scientific work. It offers them the opportunity of acquiring knowledge about the state of the art in the area of theories and methods, of presenting their research, of discussing problems, of obtaining advice from experts and of building up a professional network. It is hoped to help young researchers to become integrated into the scientific community.

    Organisation
In keynote lectures the experts will address important questions, new approaches and results, problems and strategies of research, current trends and major issues in the area of sport ideologies, practices and realities. The students will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the lectures with the experts. In addition, there will be workshops and panel discussions. All students will have the opportunity to present their own projects and get feedback from experts and other students. In addition, the experts are available for individual supervision.

    Experts
Scholars of the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences

    Guest lecturers (to be confirmed)
Andy Smith, University of Chester, UK
Gerald Gems, North Central College, USA
    Joseph Maguire, Loughborough University, UK
    Ian Ritchie, Brock University, Canada

    and others

    Selection of the students
The Summer School will take place in collaboration with the International Societies for Sport History (ISHPES) and Sport Sociology (ISSA), the European Association of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC) and the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW).
Participants should be young researchers (either planning a PhD, working on their PhD or post docs).

Participants will be selected according to the following criteria: relevance of the topic, quality of the project. The number of students will be between 25 and 30; it is aimed to include participants from as many countries as possible.

The participation in the Summer School is free. We have applied for funding and may be able to provide free lunches. Travel and accommodation have to be covered by the participants. Dear Dr. Yavrumyan,
I have the volume and can scan that articlefor you. But the thing is that the size of the journal is not convenient for making two pages per scan side by side, so Ihave to make per single page. So I need some time and can do thescanning onlyat the weekend. Would that be okay or do you need it urgently?
If within coming two-three days someone sends an offprint to you, please inform me, so that I don't do unnecessary scanning.
    Best regards,
    Hrach Martirosyan (Leiden)
