Subject: In need of sword help

Hi all,

I have a Vietnam era sword that my father gave to me, and I'd like to
know what it's worth. He refuses to answer any and all questions
about it, save that he brought it back from Nam.

It is a little over 34" long, with a brass buttcap that is dented, a
wooden hilt, another brass piece between the hilt and handguard. The
handguard (I assume) is steel, engraved with a curly q pattern around
the edge. The blade is shaped somewhat like a machete, only longer
(about 22"), and has been engraved in some places with small
notches. According to a military friend of mine, these are "kill
marks." The scabbard is bamboo, and bound together with what looks
like twine.

If anyone has any info that would help, or needs to see pictures,
please email me at nikkalia@... and let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Amy

Hi all,

I found some old white plain Ironstone Homer Laughlin Platters (3) in
the upper cupboard of my kitchen when remodeling. My hubby said they
were his grandmother's and he wants to sell them. Where would I find
out the value of them? One has cracks and they all have crazing which
I think is normal for their age. Please email me privately at
lindababe@... with your reply.

Thanks in advance!!

"...Online Sales of Used Books Draw Protest
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Authors are rebelling against new efforts by Amazon.com (news/quote)
to spur sales of used books, a practice that has become a major
source of revenue for Amazon but pays nothing to writers or
publishers...."

The Authors Guild, a trade group for writers, yesterday sent an e-
mail message to its 8,200 members, advising them to stop helping
Amazon sell books by linking to it from their own Web sites, citing
Amazon's "notorious used-book service

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/10/technology/10BOOK.html?

*********************************************************

It would seem to me that the purchasers of the books invested in the
book fully and have a perfect right to sell them to whom they please
for whatever price they please without "tipping" the author or
publisher. My goodness are my antiques going to fall under this
premise too? That if I keep it in the family for hundreds of years I
will have to tip the artists from the family, hundreds of years
later, who created the antique in the first place.

Oh come on. Let these people sell their used and antique books anyway
they please without having to "tip" anyone. This comes under a "you
have to be kidding" heading.

What is your opinion?

This notion is part of a broader issue that has affected the used
(and especially "rare") book market: the undeniable fact that most
books now are not scarce or hard to find in any sense. The internet
has created a marketplace so vast that just about any book can now be
found at any time, usually at a very inexpensive price.

This vast marketplace has also changed the idea of what it is to be a
dealer. There once was a time when being a dealer once meant a
certain level of knowledge and expertise (not to mention ethical
standards.) Now, the sole criteria for being a dealer is to simply
call yourself one.

I agree. But then the entire "antique" market has also changed with the
inception of the "Internet Classified" concept that has removed global or
regional pricing differentials. Anyone can be a "dealer" but then anyone
could run a garage sale too on any street corner. There was no "licencing"
arrangement for dealers of old or new. And I do not believe there should be.
What I do say is that there should be "accountability" and the internet, nor
the Federal authorities have been able to provide that. The Internet because
the concept is too broad and the Feds because they do not have the funds to
enforce the multiple scams that have arisen and continue to operate today.

There is a Yahoo Group that addresses just that issue if anyone is
interested....I can chase down the url for you.

What I object to is the "taxing" of of the seller in this case and tipping
the author and the publisher. I believe they are attempting to "double dip".

I am a collector myself and I just started this site to create a
place where collectors can list their item without listing fees e for
as long as they wish and need. (not only 15 days but 180 or more and,
if necessary, relist untill the item is sold).

                  have a look here:

Hi - I have placed a photo in the albums sections of this tall,
religious
figure, which is made of plaster . It is well worked and
quite beautiful. It has quite a bit of chip damage, as would be
expected with plaster, I suppose.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe John Rogers?!

Thanks in advance for any help.

HI all,
I am looking for information on Enesco Bar Hounds. When were they
made? How many are there? I have a set of 4 mugs and the matching

many they made and if they all had matching mugs.
Thank You!

I have a small plate and posted a picture to the photo section
that shows the mark on the bottom. The plate is probably French
and most likely Limoges--I think. I have been unable to locate
the mark in any reference book. Has anyone seen this mark
before? I have looked in the Collector's Encyclopedia of
Limoges, both Kovel's Mark books, Miller's and several older
books from the Library with no luck. The mark is over the glaze
so I might not be able to find out. When I get the chance I'll post
a picture showing the front of the plate. My initial photo of the
plate front didn't come out right.

Thanks
John
