Hi Greg

Thanks for uploading your MSR Mini Works Owner Review. However, in
reviewing your upload I note that the link to the manufacturer's
website is not functioning correctly. It should point to
http://http://www.msrcorp.com/ not http://www.msr.com which is a
unrelated company. Can you please take a look at this.

If you require further assistance with this problem, please ask in
the BGTFileUploadHelp group which you can find at

We've got the site turned off in an attempt to recover the Mods emails
stored on the server. We are moving to a new hosting company. The site

PLEASE READ THIS EMAIL IN FULL. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT!

Thanks for your Owner's Review. It has been added to the Owner
Review Queue and will be picked up by an Edit Moderator soon. Do
not worry if nothing happens with it for several days. All our
Editors are volunteers and your report will be subject to an
official edit within fourteen days. If you have not had a response
from an Edit Moderator via the Yahoo Groups list within this
timeframe, please let me know directly at jdeben@....

To assist in this process, if this is your first Owner Review we ask
that you post only ONE Owner Review for edit at a time. Our
experience is that it is more efficient for both the Editors and
yourself, if you post your first review, have it edited, approved
and uploaded before you post your second and subsequent reviews.
This way we can work with you on addressing any standard BGT policy
edits which you can incorporate into your second and subsequent
reviews before submission.

If you are new to BackpackGearTest.org, welcome to the community!
The Editors will work with you, within their own time constraints,
to get your first two Owner Reviews approved and upload in a timely
manner. Once these first two Owner Reviews have been approved and
you have submitted your Tester Agreement you will be eligible to
start applying for Tests. If you'd like more assistance or guidance
with the process you can request a mentor by sending an email to
Jennifer P, the mentor coordinator, at (jennifer.pope@...).

You may receive edits or comments from other members of the group.
These edits and comments, while not official, should be considered
carefully, and if you find them substantial, revise and re-post your
review. Incorporating member edits and re-submitting to the list
will usually result in a better review, as well as making things
easier for the official Editor. Please put REVISED in the subject
line of your re-submitted review, if you take this route or make any
changes to your review BEFORE the review has been taken by an Edit
Moderator.

Additionally, it is important for you to monitor the Yahoo Groups
list to keep track of the progress of your Owner Review. Once an
Editor has taken your OR and made the necessary edits they will post
their comments to the list with EDIT in the subject line. Once you
have incorporated these edits into your review please use REPOST in
the subject line. When your OR has been approved by the Editor they
will use APPROVED in the subject line.

If you'd like to keep track of the progress of your OR, the entire
Owner Review Queue is posted to the yahoo group list on Fridays.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask via
the list or contact me directly.

Hi Jamie - thanks for the message. I lost track of what happened to my
owner review last year; I had submitted it a few times post-revision,
and for some reason the edits I had included kept getting dropped upon
submission - I suspect a problem with the HTML conversion tools I was
using. Now that I'm out of school, I'm interested in starting it up
again and finishing the review - so any input or help would be
appreciated.

thx!

Weight: 170 lbs.(77 kg.)

City, State, Country: Athens, Georgia, USA

Backpacking Background: I started camping and backpacking as a boy
scout in my early teens and have kept it up when possible between
school and work. Usually I'll take a weekend trip to the north
Georgia mountains or just find a lake near my home and go fishing and
camping with my wife. I would consider myself an amateur camper and
my wife is certainly new to it all, but we have fun with it. We try
to go on a trip every month. We've bought some light weight gear to
help her on the longer hikes (which is pretty much all of them for
her!). Being from the south we don't like the cold weather months as
much as the warmer months.

Manufacturer: Kelty
Year of Manufatcture: 2003 (in China!)
URL: www.kelty.com
Listed Weight: 2 lb 7 oz.
Weight as Delivered: 2 lb. 8 oz.
Product Description:
33" Wide x 82" Long x 66" Girth
100% Nylon ripstop shell and interior lining
Thermolite Quallofil filling
Army Green

The Stratus came in a cardboard box that included the sleeping bag as
well as a stuff sack. The stuff sack was black with a draw cord at
the opening.
The bag itself has two large zippers that run down the right side of
the bag. A full length zipper tube also runs the length of the zipper
for insulation and keeping the bag draft-free. It has interior loops
for securing a liner for cooler weather and exterior loops to attach
the bag to a sleeping mat. Getting into the bag requires unzipping
the zipper and then of course inserting your body into the bag,
followed by re-zipping of the zipper.

This bag has been with me for about 18 months now. While camping at
the Grand Canyon in early May of 2004 I had to get rid of my old bag
due to it's age and poor insulating capabilities and opted to buy a
newer, lighter bag. Since I live in Georgia and usually do my camping
there the Stratus was an inexpensive option for three-season camping.
My first night in the bag was wonderful and I slept like a baby!!
The weather was in the high 40's (fahrenheit) at night and the bag
kept me warm and toasty from head to toe. Since I'm 6' 4" I needed a
long bag that would cover the length of my body and this bag did the
trick. The upper zipper was easy to use even in the dark and the
contour of the bag wrapped around my body without constricting
movement. However the lower zipper has been stuck since the day I
bought the bag and I have yet to pry it loose. Luckily it's stuck at
the bottom of the bag so it doesn't leave a gaping hole.
On subsequent camp outs here in the south this bag has been ideal for
warmer weather and actually feels good against my skin during those
hot, humid summer nights. The nylon shell and interior lining stay
relatively cool and comfortable. However, during the late fall this
bag doesn't keep me as warm as I would like. I usually have to take
along an extra blanket or liner if the temperature gets near 40
degrees fahrenheit or lower. The rating says that it's good down to
35 degrees but I haven't found that to be true. The weight of the bag
is nice and it really doesn't take up much room in my backpack. A
nice compression sack packs it down even smaller and the synthetic
fill is nice and soft. I haven't found any use for the liner loops or
sleeping mat loops but I guess it's nice to have them. Another nice
thing about the bag is that it has a large velcro latch at the top
that can be used to secure the zipper or any other lose items you
might want near you. It's nice not having that cold zipper metal
against your face at night!

Summary:
The Stratus is a great, soft, light bag for most three season camping.
It packs small and out of the way but won't set you back hundreds of
dollars. For the money it's a great value and the craftsmanship
behind it will make it worth the small investment.

Things I like:
1. Light weight and small size
2. Comfortable lining material
3. Good for warm/hot weather

Things I don't like:
1. Poor performance below 40 degree fahrenheit
2. One zipper is stuck
3. No chest compartment

Hope this helps,
Adam Goodwin

   MSRP: $49.95

   Product Description:
This is a backpackers dream stove. Being super light I couldn’t even notice
I was carrying it. The fuel is small and light. With 10,000 BTU of output,
this will boil water in 3.5 minutes, and can last over 90 min of burn time.
The stove has a built-in igniter that sends out an electric spark to start the
flame once the gas is turned on. The stove performs great in cold conditions
and with no hassle of priming or pumping your fuel. The stove has four fold-out
wires to provide support for most sizes of backpacking pots. Thus being
collapsible the stove can be stored in any small pocket. This stove is simple
and easy to operate, one will never have a problem with trying to light or use
the stove.

   Field Use:
This stove so far has been my favorite stove to use on any backpacking trip.
This stove is very small and easy to use. I was impressed about the quality of
the stove. I had no fuel linkage problems. The auto lighter is very convenient
where I didn’t spend time searching for a lighter. Plus at times when I forgot
any matches or lighters this stove proved to be a great lifesaver for starting
fires. This stove has operated in most of all conditions. The highest
elevation the stove has operated was on Kings Peak Utah which is 13.526 feet or
4123 meters. The stove had no problems and I can see will work fine in other
elevations as well. In the end the stove turned out to be very enjoyable and
will continue to use on my trips.

   Summary:

   Pros:

   • Small and very light
   • Very durable
   • Great BTU output for the given size!
   • Handles most of all backpacking pots
   • Fuel lasts a long time with short boiling time
   • Fuel is not pumped and doesn’t leak

   Cons:

   • Not all stores supply the fuel.

Welcome back John. I'm glad you did not loose track of us.

I have officially removed your GE Steelbeam 4D Fluorescent Lantern
and the second OR you submited, the Camelbak Zephyr Hydration Pack
from the Edit Queue (it's our proceedure when the author doesn't
respond after a few weeks of the follow up email being sent).

Soooo, what you need to do to get back into the Edit Queue is post
your first OR, the GE Steelbeam 4D Fluorescent Lantern, hopefully
with most of the edits your original editor Roger gave you, and I
will pick up and add it to the Queue. In a short time an editor
will scoop it up again and if it's all set you'll be on your way.

After that is squared away and uploaded to BGT you'll be ready to
submit the Camelbak OR again or another of your choosing for the 2nd
OR.

Sound good?

Backpacking Background:
School holidays with my parents were mostly spent doing day hikes in the
forests of southern Germany.
Since 1998 I started doing longer trips in Mediterranean Europe, the jungles
of South East Asia, outback of Australia and the jungles of Central America.
Although I prefer relatively warm zones I want to keep hiking in Northern
Europe which *probably* means a bit heavier (clothes, sleeping etc) then I
strive to hike. With my hammock and 'minimalist' approach I try to go as
lightweight as safely (and sometimes comfortably) possible, depending on my
activities, destination and budget.

Product Description:
The Platypus is basically a simple, very sturdy plastic bag. It can be
folded or rolled up when not in use. When full it stands by itself if placed
upright.

The narrow mouth of the Platypus comes with a white cap.
The thick strong plastic does not leave a plastic taste to the water and the
'bag' is stated to be tough enough to be frozen or used with boiling water.
Although I never tried freezing the bottle, I have used it sometimes with
boiling water and experienced no problems, other then I once burned myself.

Field conditions:
In the eight years I have used my Platypus, it was mainly used in moderate
to hot climates (10 – 48 C, 50 – 118 F) of Mediterranean Europe, and almost
daily the last two and a half years (may 2003 - november 2005) during my
round the world trip, which covered South East Asia, Australia and Central
America.

The woodland, desert, and rocky areas did not have any influence on the use
or performance of the water bottle. Thorns and sharp stones did not damage
the plastic bag. Dirt on the outside was easily washed and/or wiped off with
a piece of cloth.

I never had any problems with germ growth during or after prolonged use. The
inside of the neck of the bottle was cleaned with a piece of toilet paper
when necessary.

As a matter of preventing problems, I cleaned the Platypus on the inside by
mixing a few drops of iodine with water, shaking and rinsing the bottle
afterward. No coloration or difference in taste appeared afterwards.

Filling any flexible water container from a pond or stream requires a bit of
adaptation. The water from the stream or pond compresses the side of the
bottle when submerged and therefore is not as easy to fill as a hard-bodied
water bottle. Manipulating the bottle width, angle and air space with both
hands is one option to fill it. Another way is to fill the container with
the help of a cup and to pour it from cup to the Platypus or use the hose
from a water filter and pump it from the pond/stream through the filter into
the bottle.

Filling the Platypus with the narrow opening with a cup or water filter is
not as easy as with a wide mouth water container. Keeping a long hose from
the water filter in the bottle makes filling easier. Another option to ease
the filling is using a small funnel.

The standard cap makes it possible though to replace the original cap with
any cap from a soft drink bottle, or with a cheap 'push – pull cap'.

The dimensions of the Platypus make it easy to hand carry it while walking.
Stowing it in the side pockets of a backpack, inside a daypack, trouser or
jacket pocket is no problem either, although personally I do not like to
carry a full bottle in a pocket of my trouser or jacket.

On some daytrips I like to carry just a 'hip bag', and unfortunately the 1
liter Play bottle is difficult to fit in most standard holsters on a hip bag
or other belt holsters I have encountered in most outdoorstores.

Summary:
An extremely light and strong water container which takes up less space then
the hard-bodied bottles I know, wether full or empty. It also leaves no
plastic taste in the water. Definitely an item that I will take on any trip
or would replace.

Things I like:
1. Lightweight
2. Strong
3. Easy to replace caps in remote locations or countries without outdoor
equipment stores
4. Space saver when empty
5.No plastic taste

Things I don't like:
1. Narrow mouth makes filling 'difficult'
2. Does not fit in standard belt 'holsters'
--
It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most
intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.

comment: i own three single-pole shelters - one with a square
footprint, one with an oval, and one with a circle. yes, i'm a big
fan of this shelter type! it is nigh on to impossible to get them
pitched symmetrically. you're not alone.

edit: your second sentence is incomplete. i would suggest combining

I ventured into..."

edit #1: start your new paragraph with "However, she still prefers..."

edit #2: "That meant purchasing the Hex 3 Nest Inner Tent, which is
all mesh with a coated nylon floor, and which adds an additional 2
pounds..." sorry, that was multiple edits in one. your sentence
needed a bit of re-construction and i really think you need to specify
that the Nest also has a nylon floor.

canines." the original phrasing just seems a bit unwieldy.

comment: thanks for including your personal take/opinion on
condensation. it's too often perceived as a negative or as something
that can be eliminated with more perfect design (whatever that is).

> Condensation as never dripped on me, water has never filled the

edit #1: "Condensation has never dripped..."

edit #2: "inside - with the exception of what my dogs dragged in."

suggestion: i would eliminate the apologetic tone. instead, why don't
you say something like "here is a sampling of conditions I have used
the Hex 3 in, and my experiences and thoughts on them"?

> Early In The Morning:
> * As long as and individual have not camped in a low stagnate
> area or near water there will be no or very little condensation.

edit: "As long as an individual has not camped in a low stagnant area..."

question: when you say "stagnant," what exactly do you mean? to me,
"stagnant" implies foul water. This makes the sentence seem a bit
redundant.

> A Wet Night:
> * There will be some condensation so camp and sleep in a way
> that will minimize it. Ventilation, ventilation, ventilation

edit: you are missing a period.

> * Remember the tent is a cone shape, when the door is unzipped,
> which is bottom to top; the center of the tent is exposed to rain.

edit: this sentence is confusing. i see what you are saying but your
punctuation choices are distracting from your meaning. maybe:
"Remember the tent is a cone shape. When the door is unzipped, from
the bottom up to the top, the center of the tent is then exposed to rain."

> * Remember the tent is a cone shape, when the door is unzipped,
> which is bottom to top; the center of the tent is exposed to snow.

edit: same as the prior edit.

> * Tap the side of the tent to let snow slide down before
> opening the door.
> * Wide snow stake or snow anchors are imperative in setting the
> tent up.

comment: you should check out this trip report i just saw. one of
the folks on the trip used a Hex in an insane storm. here's a link:

> * It is a single walled shelter, there is absolutely no
> insulating value to the tent - It will be cold unless the proper gear
> is utilized.
> * The optional footprint works wonders, I highly recommend it.

question: are you talking about the Nest again, or the Hex 3 Floor?
just be sure to use the proper name, to minimize confusion.
