JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Job title: SENIOR MENTOR-ORGANIZER
Organization: LGBT MENTORING PROJECT

Background on the organization

The LGBT Mentoring Project provides mentoring, coaching, training, and support to LGBT and allied political leaders who are committed to building larger, stronger, much more effective organizations working to secure LGBT rights.
A senior mentor-organizer works side-by-side with established leaders, new potential leaders, and leadership teams.Partner organizations in the past year have included the Vote for Equality Project of the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, Equality Maine, and Ask Cleveland.
The Mentoring Project provides consistent, frequent, face-to-face, one-on-one, on-site mentoring. We believe this type of mentoring is essential to identify and develop great leaders and teams. The Mentoring Project is a pilot—an experiment—to test this hypothesis, and to see if this form of intensive mentoring produces measurable results in organizational growth, strength, and productivity. The experiment has shown enough promise to date that we’ve expanded it each year over the last three years.

Description of the position

The Mentoring Project would prefer to hire a full-time senior mentor-organizer based in Los Angeles who would both work closely with Vote for Equality and also with a small number of other organizations, some in California, some around the country. We would also consider hiring a part-time senior mentor-organizer not based in Los Angeles, with the understanding that a significant part of the work would require travel to Los Angeles.
A strong candidate for senior mentor-organizer must already be a terrific organizer. You can’t teach it if you haven’t done it. You must have practical experience taking initiative, and recruiting a team to take action with you. You must be terrific at:
  • making a strong ask – a strong ask is one where, face-to-face, you ask people to make a specific commitment to get active in a campaign, and they make a commitment, and then they show up and live up to that commitment;
  • doing a 1-on-1—that means talking with a volunteer face-to-face, identifying their self-interest in getting involved, and recruiting them to take on a job that excites them, plays to their strengths, and moves the campaign forward;
  • recruiting large numbers of volunteers face-to-face and on the phone, and motivating them so they actually get involved doing political work;
  • teaching practical political skills and problem-solving; and
  • increasing the number of volunteers who become leaders.
Experience organizing on LGBT community issues is a plus.
Experience working to defeat an anti-gay ballot measure is a big plus.
Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Experience organizing in communities of color is a plus.
Experience building a strong LGBT political organization or campaign is a plus.
Experience as a mentor is crucial. As part of your organizing, you should have gained experience not only motivating others to do their best, but also motivating others to reexamine their habits and assumptions; to be open to new ideas; to experiment with new forms of action, even when that means going outside of their comfort zone. You need to challenge and agitate leaders to do better thinking – leaders whose current habits and assumptions need to be better to meet the challenges they and their organization are facing.
At the same time, you must be the kind of person from whom others want to receive coaching and mentoring. You’ve got to be interesting, smart, and kind. You need both a sense of humor, and a deep and abiding interest in the people you’re working with. You have to have respect and curiosity about people, whether they are new volunteers or old-timers, whether they rank high in the organization or not. You have to communicate that respect, and the joy you find in your public relationships.
The two most important aspects of this are:
  1. You have to enjoy catching people doing something right and, when you do, you have to enjoy praising them for what they’ve done; and
  2. You have to notice when people do something wrong and, when you do, you have to embrace the necessity of giving them clear, specific criticism in a humane way. As much as you need people to like you, you have to regularly take the risk of being disliked. You need to be far more direct and honest than the norm – and you have to offer your critique with genuine kindness.
You must be outstanding at listening, observing, and asking questions, and at least reasonably good at speaking, reading, and writing. Excellence in this entire range of communications skills is a big plus.
Finally, in our experience, you must be self-critical. That means: even when you do something well, you’re intensely curious about how you can do it better next time. You push yourself to aim higher. You regularly seek out advice and ideas from others, not to substitute for your own judgment, but to augment and challenge it.
Supervisor: Dave Fleischer, Director of the Project
Compensation: Equivalent to an annual, full-time salary of $50,000 - $80,000, depending upon experience and capability.
Start date: February 21, 2010
To apply, please send a cover letter and your resume to jobs@lgbtmentoring. org.
The LGBT Mentoring Project is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. We particularly encourage applications from women and people of color.

Theta Xi Omega Fraternity Incorporated Spring 2010 Rush Session

Greetings:

In a society like today's, one would think that the majority of man would have
advanced to the point where 'different' would no longer equate to 'wrong' and
all encompassing respect would trump people's negative actions towards things
that they may not care for or understand. Unfortunately, that is not the case
and violence, discrimination, mental and spiritual abuse amongst other pains are
at an all time high.

There are, however, opportunities to bring peace and unity to a hurting people
and make the best attempts to revive the spirit of humanity that seems to have
died down to a small flickering flame. Theta Xi Omega Fraternity Inc. is one of
those opportunities.

Theta Xi Omega Fraternity Incorporated is a new open and affirming
social/service fraternal organization which was founded in February of 2009. In
such early stages of inception, good quality men are needed to help create a
strong solid foundation to which men after can come build on and continue the
great legacy we've started. There are many fraternities out there with diverse
missions/visions and we celebrate them all, however what we feel separates us
from others is that we are a gathering of men who have committed to embracing
brotherhood with each other and in doing so, link up with the vision of the
fraternity & do our part to bring peace, love and togetherness to a broken
world, regardless of societal differences.

If you've ever considered being apart of a movement to find brotherhood and
doing your part to be a blessing of many kinds to people of all walks of life,
feel free to contact Theta Xi Omega Fraternity at theta_xi_omega@... or
through http://thetaxiomega.ning.com/ . We will be gladly willing to answer any
and all questions you may have.

Until then, be well and Happy New Year!

Happy Sunday Morning

Greetings in the precious name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we are blessed to enter into a New Beginning or a New Year and in this season there is much reflection and rededication to the faith and philosophies that fuel our future and govern our steps.  I am reminded of everything weve been through.  For me first as a Christian, second as an African-American, third as a Man, and fourth as a Gay person in America I constantly have to remind myself that I made Jesus my choice.  One man asked me why I am a Christian and I looked him straight in the eyes and said because without Jesus I would be a murderer.  Without any discussion of why such a drastic turnaround from what is my normal character we both agreed that I should remain a Christian.  A large part of me wanted to just detail what exactly in my history caused such an influence that would warrant such an action, but Jesus makes everything alright and I didnt have to rehash all of thatHowever, it is hard to let things go into the sea of forgetfulness and it is even harder to shed the fear that those things would happen again.

I am reminded of Slavery, Jim Crow, and Segregation.  I am reminded of the shackles placed on us by the African-American Church which stated such declarations like if you drink, smoke, or go to the movies you are not saved.  I am reminded of how the much needed Womens Movement could only realize their equality by demonizing men and castrating their authority. I am reminded of how a Gay man has to fear walking down the street in all that he is without some insecure perpetrator creating chaos, mayhem, and strife.  I am reminded of a life gone by that made me who I am today and cautions my future.  And, sometimes I wonderhow can I face tomorrow without bitterness and resentment caused by the pain of life, the unfairness of relationships, and the inequality of circumstance.

About two years ago in celebration of the Lent Season I placed a basket of chocolates on my desk at work for anyone who wished to partake. It was a great success and there was a lot of appreciation and later support. Coworkers would contribute money so that the basket would not go empty and others would bring in more chocolate and drop it in the basket to sustain its life.  Today it is affectionately called the Chocolateria, but after two years of just watching I must say it has been a true learning experience.  The character of mankind is amazing.  There were those that would only take the chocolate if I was not at my desk and others that would take, complain, and never contribute.  Yet others who would now demand that you have what they like while others eat so much without the concern of whether there was enough for anybody else. All in all the Chocolateria has survived for more than 40 days and even the Jewish partakers know that its purpose was to commemorate not only the 40 days before Easter, but also the 40 days that Jesus fasted in the wilderness.

It was this week however when I first thought of stopping this function.  You see there is a six foot 7 inch, three hundred pound woman with whom I have a jovial relationship who must have been having a trying day. She came up behind me, pushed me out of the way, threw her large claws, which she called hands, into the full basket, and retrieved all but one piece of chocolate. I said Gurl what is your problem and after she huffed I went over to her desk to retrieve some of the pieces to ensure there was enough for others.  When I got there she placed the chocolate into the female safe and I had to let her know that that would not stop meSee I would go in there to get it if the situation warranted, but I simply told her that no one would want it now that it has been in her underwear and she replied to me in Scripture by statingLet not you good be evil spoken of and I wondered how I could control thatHow could I in all of my trials control what people are going to say?

Then I realized that this was just another, forgive me but I have to call the sin by name, another bastardization of scripture that many false profits have built their churches on and have influenced a people to corruption.  I pulled out my Bible and read the most perfect advise to anchor my future. In exegesis and eisegesis the passage offers advice that if allowed to be employed to past, present, and future would alleviate many social ills.  Let everyone decide for themselves, but as for me it is my goal.   I dont wish to control anyone and I dont wish to be controlled, but in Jesus I can do all things.

Romans 14

1Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

4Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.  5One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

6He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

7For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.

8For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.  9For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. 10But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

11For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

13Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. 14I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. 16Let not then your good be evil spoken of:  17For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

18For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.   19Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. 20For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. 21It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

22Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. 23And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Grace and Peace

Ricky

SUNDAY MORNING

Today we celebrate the moment when God the Father decided in love and genrosity to sacrifice a Son.  This Son was born to shed His Blood as the final requirement to reunite man and God.  Born of flesh this man was to die. So we celebrate the day Jesus the Christ was revealed as mass. A tangible source to sacrifce and an example of how to live, we met Him, we heard Him, We crucified Him and God's promise was fulfiled.

The below listed work is not my own, but it tells the story of the purpose and how it must have been for the Mass of Christ.

THE (SCIENTIFIC) DEATH OF JESUS

[]

At the age of 33, Jesus was condemned to the death penalty.

[]

At the time crucifixion was the "worst" death. Only the worst criminals condemned to be crucified. Yet it was even more dreadful for Jesus, unlike other criminals condemned to death by crucifixion Jesus was to be nailed to the cross by His hands and feet.

[]

Each nail was 6 to 8 inches long.

[]

The nails were driven into His wrist.  Not into His palms as is commonly portrayed. There's a tendon in the wrist that extends to the shoulder.  The Roman guards knew that when the nails were being hammered into the wrist that tendon would tear and break, forcing Jesus to use His back muscles to support himself so that He could breath.

[]

Both of His feet were nailed together.  Thus He was forced to support Himself on the single nail that impaled His feet to the cross.  Jesus could not support himself with His legs because of the pain so He was forced to alternate between arching His back then using his legs just to continue to breath.  Imagine the struggle, the pain, the suffering, the courage.

[]

Jesus endured this reality for over 3 hours.

Yes, over 3 hours! Can you imagine this kind of suffering?  A few minutes before He died, Jesus stopped bleeding.

He was simply pouring water from his wounds.

[]

From common images we see wounds to His hands and feet and even the spear wound to His side.  But do we realize His wounds were actually made in his body.  A hammer driving large nails through the wrist, the feet overlapped and an even large nail hammered through the arches, then a Roman guard piercing His side with a spear.   But before the nails and the spear Jesus was whipped and beaten.  The whipping was so severe that it tore the flesh from His body.  The beating so horrific that His face was torn and his beard ripped from His face.  The crown of thorns cut deeply into His scalp.  Most men would not have survived this torture.

[]

He had no more blood to bleed out, only water poured from His wounds.

The human adult body contains about 3.5 liters (just less than a gallon) of blood.

[]

Jesus poured all 3.5 liters of his blood; He had three nails hammered into his members; a crown of  thorns on his head and, beyond that, a Roman soldier who stabbed a spear into his chest.

[]

All these without mentioning the humiliation He passed after carrying his own cross for almost 2 kilometers, while the crowd spat in his face and threw stones (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight, only for its higher part, where his hands were nailed).

[]

Jesus had to endure this experience, so that you can have free access to God.

So that your sins could be "washed" away. All of them, with no exception! Don't ignore this situation. JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOU! For you, who now read this e-mail. Do not believe that He only died for others (those who go to church or for pastors, bishops, etc).

[]

He died for you! It is easy to pass jokes or foolish photos  by e-mail, but when it comes to God, sometimes you feel ashamed to forward to others because you are worried of what they may think about you.

Accept the reality, the truth that JESUS IS THE ONLY SALVATION FOR THE WORLD.

[]

God has plans for you, show all your friends what He experienced to save you. Now think about this! May God bless your life!

[]

60 seconds with God...

[]

All you have to do is:

1.   Simply pray for the person who sent this message to you: Lord, you know the life of _________. I ask You to bless him/her in all things and make him/her prosperous. Take care of his/her family, his/her health, his/her work and all his/her future plans.  Lead him/her not into temptation, but deliver him/her from evil.  In Jesus' name, amen.

Take a moment to appreciate the power of God in your life, for doing what pleases Him.

If you are not ashamed to do this, please, follow Jesus' instructions. He said (Matthew 10:32 & 33): "Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whosoever denies me before others,  I also will deny before my Father in heaven".

Yes, I love God. He is my source of life and my savior. He keeps me alive day and night.

Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me". Philippians 4:13.

This is the simple proof. If you love God and you believe and trust in salvation through Christ Jesus, send this to all those you love.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
 by Rev. Robert Johnnene OFD,
Mission Saints Sergius & Bacchus/ Franciscans of Divine Mercy
Based on the Scriptural Readings for vigil Masses Midnight and and Christmas Day 2009
www.MissionStSergius.org

These words of the well know Christmas Carol written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
"Joy to the World, the Lord has come. Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing" could not express the feeling we all should be having this blessed day nor the mission we have been called to live by the birth of this infant child called Jesus of Nazareth.
On Christmas day there are three sets of readings, one for the Midnight Mass, another for the mass at dawn and the third for the later mass of the day. There is also a special reading for vigil masses held earlier in the evening of December 24th.
When you combine them all they provide us with the very powerful truth and reason for living according to God`s will.
John 1 begins with these words "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it."
These words remind us that Christ came from God, and is God and that He took on the human form in the same manner as every other human being ever born or to be born, as an infant.  He came into this world in the same way as well, being born of a woman.
Let us try to understand the darkness that seems to encompass so many today.
I believe that God chose this way in order to let us know that we are all created in His image and we all have a job do to in this world for God.
God has given us free choice therefore we can not accept the job He wishes us to do if that is our choice.
There is so much symbolism in the miracle of Christmas.  God chose simple people, not the rich and famous.  Christ was born in a poor stable filled with the animals of the farmers and travelers.
The announcement of Christ's birth was not to the great and mighty or the High priests but to simple shepherds. God did this to let us know that he calls everyone not just the rich and famous.
Didn't Christ say "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Matthew 19:23-25
The readings also provide us with the purpose of Christ's coming to earth; "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus". We are called to live sensibly, to be generous, kind, and not to discriminate.  Somehow that message seems to be lost on many people today.
Everywhere we hear of news of people who steal, rape, murder and let us not forget wage wars all in search of money, power and domination at the expense of others.
We are supposed to be the caretakers of God's creation but many do not take that God given responsibility seriously.
We have been charged by God to care for this planet earth and all God's creatures yet we are destroying the ecosystem that God created because it is cheaper and more profitable than using alternative energies that are possible.
"Christ gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. These things speak and encourage and reprimand all authorities. Let no one take no notice of you." Titus 2:11-15
Jesus told us the way we should live and that message was "Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, mind, soul and body and love your neighbor as you love yourself"
God so loved the world that He gave His only son to us.  There is no greater gift anyone could ever receive so what gift are we giving God on this His birthday?
The perfect gift would be to be kind, considerate, loving, caring, forgiving, charitable, and respectful of the differences that God has created in all things.  We might worship God more and talk with him which is called praying.
The reading from Hebrews  lets us know that even the angels are to worship Christ and that His kingdom will last forever.
"Let all God's angels worship him. In speaking of the angels he says, He makes his angels winds,
his servants flames of fire. But about the Son he says, Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,
and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.
" Hebrews 1:6-9
On this Christmas day of 2009 let us follow the directions of the angels who announced the Good News to the shepherds watching their flocks.
"Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased
."
Let us try to be persons God will be pleased, so that we can fully enjoy the peace and joy the birth of God's son celebrated this day.
Let us return God's gift to us by being more tolerant of the differences in others, charitable in giving to organizations and people in need. Let us be concerned about the homeless, sick, poor, aged and disabled of the world.
Let u s speak out against injustice, war, and greed.  In short, let us make a difference in the world and make it a better place tomorrow than it is today.
By doing this we will affirm that indeed there is "Joy in the world because the Lord has come and instilled in us His way so that we have become His instrument here on earth to bring about the promised peace of Christ."

May the promise of Christmas fill you with comfort and peace and may that peace be extended from you to all you encounter.

(Billboard Publicity Wire/PRWEB ) December 23, 2009 -- Indie recording artist Nhojj made OUTMusic Awards history when his ballad "Love" was voted 2009 Outstanding R&B/Soul Song of the Year by The Alliance of LGBT Recording Artists & Performers. This marks the first time an African American male has won an OMA. The LOGO sponsored event was held December 8, 2009, at the legendary Webster Hall in New York City. It is the biggest night in LGBT entertainment, and the only gala ceremony of its kind in the world.

Nhojj is also the first artist to win the OUTStanding R&B/Soul song of the year. OUTMusic added this and other categories to the ceremony this year to more fully reflect the music of the LGBT community. After his win, the singer/songwriter took the stage performing "Love" before an audience including OMA Lifetime Achievement recipient Kevin Aviance, Village Voice columnist Michael Musto, LOGO personalities DeMarco Majors and Julie Goldman among many other notables in the LGBT community. The ceremony was hosted by Noah's Arc star Rodney Chester and GLAAD Media Award winner Kate Clinton.

"Love" features keyboardist Carl Evans (Stevie Wonder, Barry White); David Stark on Guitar (Rick James & Teena Marie); Tommy Aros on percussion (Luis Miguel); and is mastered by by Robert Honablue, whose Gold and Platinum credits include Santana, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, and Miles Davis.

Director Kirk Shannon-Butts featured "Love" in his highly acclaimed Indie film "Blueprint," which screened at 2008 Cannes International Film Festival, and also directed the music video "Love." Unlike many current R&B music videos, it is the sensitive reflection of two male college students who feel a mutual attraction toward each other. "I believe love is for everyone... homosexual and heterosexual" Nhojj says, "One day soon our world will acknowledge this simple truth."

In 2004, Nhojj's sophomore CD "Someday Peace Love & Freedom" was nominated for OUTStanding New Male Recording. Songs on that album covered issues ranging from homelessness to homophobia. Nhojj chose "Fighting for Love," an original composition about a warrior fighting against ignorance and hatred, to perform at a special OMA Nominee showcase held at Fez in NYC that year.

Nhojj grew up in Guyana and Trinidad, where he performed for the Presidents of both countries. He began singing in church at the age of 5, but didn't embark on a career in music until after graduating from NYU with a BA in Economics. Earlier this year he returned to his Caribbean roots and performed "Love" at the 2009 Barbados Music Awards.

To date Nhojj has released 6 CDs and an unplugged live DVD by Emmy nominated director Bill Cote. He has performed at Lincoln Center, and toured the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and the United Kingdom.

In addition to his recording and performance schedule, Nhojj regularly donates his gift of music to people living with HIV/AIDS. He performs in hospitals, hospices, residential facilities and treatment centers throughout New York City , as part of the Lifebeat "Hearts and Voices" program.

DARREN --

Although it's Christmas Eve, I wanted to share some exciting news: The Senate just passed a historic health reform bill.

In all the back and forth, it's easy to lose sight of what this incredible breakthrough really means. But consider this: This Christmas, there are millions of Americans without health insurance who risk losing everything if they get sick.

There are mothers and fathers who wonder how they'll provide for their children because an illness has wiped out their savings. There are small business owners who worry that they'll have to lay off a long-time employee because the cost of insurance is rapidly rising.

If we finish the job, all this can change. We will have beaten back the special interests who have for so long perpetuated the status quo. We will have enacted the most important piece of social policy since the Social Security Act in the 1930s, and the most important health reform since Medicare in the 1960s.

In Decembers to come, millions more will have access to affordable coverage. Parents will have the security and stability of knowing their insurance can't be revoked at a moment's notice. And the skyrocketing costs plaguing our small businesses will be brought under control.

When you make calls, write letters, organize, this is the change you're making -- a better life for your family and for men and women in every state.

There is still more to do before I can sign reform into law -- a last round of negotiations and final votes in the Senate and the House -- and I'm counting on your help every step of the way. But for now, I hope that as you celebrate this holiday season, you remember that the work you are doing is making our union more perfect, one step at a time. For that, I am grateful to you.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays,

President Barack Obama

P.S. -- Organizing for America supporters are signing a note of appreciation to all the senators who have worked so hard to make this possible. I hope you'll join them:

Happy Sunday Morning

For those of you with audio, attached you will find an ole school gift of Douglas Miller singing- My soul has been anchored....ENJOY

How must Joseph have felt?

This story has been told many times before. How one brother favored by his father was mis-treated by his siblings and was sustained through calamity and abuse.  Though his name meant May God Give Increase he had to fall from the comfort and surety of his fathers home to uncertainty and trials that would make the strongest of men quiver.

As the story goes those bound to Joseph by blood, the un-denying tie that should insight love, compassion, and favor proved only to enact jealousy and strife.  His brothers wanted him dead,  They could not accept the fact that Joseph was favored by their shared biological father and after Joseph told them of a dream where all of his brothers were bowing  to him, the brothers thought enough is enough and decided to end any possibility of favor by taking the very breath out of Josephs life.

Yes, the attempt was foiled, but rather than experience deliverance and relief, Joseph a free man was unjustly sold into slavery and false witness was reported to the father so to deter any hope for search and rescue.

In all of his new experience there was still no evidence that Gods promise in his dream could ever come to fruition.  In fact, it wasnt until he was again unjustly accused and thrown into prison where the dreams were able to take root and Gods promise was able to be fulfilled, but I often wonder about what was never discussed. What was never talked about? What seemed to never be of concern?

Having the habit of being Monday morning quarterbacks, we read the story, the end is revealed, and since everything turned out right we dont question what was going through Josephs mind during these horrific storms.  How did he feel when those he loved threw him into a ditch?  How the tears must have fallen when they began to shovel dirt upon his head.   What joy and expectation when they pulled him out. And, how his faith must have crumbled when he learned he was being sold into slavery.

Now most of us can regain our strength after these many heartbreaks, redirect ourselves to our chosen philosophy of life, and repurpose ourselves to our ideal future, but the trials were not over for Joseph. Joseph was now learning to live his life as property, having to wait on others instead of being served, and being told when he can rest and when he could eat.  He may have even started to get use to his new life when again he was falsely accused, condemned and thrown into jail.

How would you have handled the Joseph dilemma of being promised greatness, but only receiving strife? Would you give up and accept defeat? Would you throw in the towel and drown in self pity?  Would you even consider suicide?

No one ever discusses Josephs state of mind.  The Bible gives no reference as to Josephs weakness or strength of character and people rarely disclose their weakest point.  I simply do not believe that it matters because Gods promise is thatHe that shall endureth to the end, shall be saved.

Joseph endured and Joseph was restored.

The Lesson

Go throughCry if you have tojust remember God will turn your mourning into dancing and Go through.

If you can no longer walkcrawlremember he promised that he will never leave you or forsake you and Go though.

If the darkness is so deep you can no longer seeremember that weve come this far by faith and Go though.

If you feel all alone because there is no one to care in your homeremember What a friend we have in Jesus and Go through.

When there is no food on your tableremember that God is able and Go through.

You may want God to move your mountain when the mountain is leading you to your blessingremember Joseph and how God made his enemies his footstool and Go through.

Climb your mountain and let God fight your battles.            Endure to the end.Jesus is your friend.  Trust in Him and never doubtJesus has promised to bring you out.

Run your race and cross the finish line...for He promised you eternal life sublime.

God is not a man that he should lienor is He the son of man that He should repent.  Your yoke is easy and your burdens are light.

            Thank God today

            Thank God tonight.

2009's First Christmas Joke

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.

'In honour of this holy season' Saint Peter said,  'You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.'

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. 'It represents a candle', he said.

'You may pass through the pearly gates' Saint Peter said.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, 'They're bells.'

Saint Peter said 'You may pass through the pearly gates'.

The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and  finally pulled out a pair of women's panties.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, 'And just what do those symbolize?'

The man replied, 'These are Carols.'

And So The Christmas Season
Begins......

Let’s face it…life can truly be difficult.  There’s no getting around it.

So, the question becomes…”Do we shy away from hardship or do we face it head on?”

We must learn to savor every challenge in life.  God allows certain things in order to draw us closer into his loving arms.  So don’t focus merely on the difficulty…but take keen notice of why the challenge has come.  A different perspective will always give you a renewed outlook.

Have a great Tuesday!

This has definitely been an interesting read.

I am a Barack Obama supporter.  While I am wishing him and his administration all the best, I believe that he should not have given himself a grade…whether it would have been an A or an F.  My reasoning is that he is in the middle of his test.  Someone used the analogy of school.  You don’t grade yourself at the beginning.  You grade yourself at the end of the exam.  As someone else stated, we cannot expect him to accomplish everything that needs to be done in a mere eleven months.

We tend to focus on the bad things over the past eight years of Bush, but there was much more crazy stuff done during Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan and so on.  The financial mess didn’t start with Bush…Clinton and Larry Summers were the one who allowed the banks to get to the place that they are today.

Barack has not instituted much change within the first year either…he has continued with Bush policies of executive privilege for his social secretary when she failed to perform her duties because she wanted to be at the party; he is continuing with warrantless wiretapping; he is continuing with rendition and continued jail sentences for those in Cuba; the list goes on.

Do I blame him for not getting things turned around immediately…No.  Do I believe that he has changed a lot…No, not as of yet.

He doesn’t deserve a B or an F right now.  Neither does he deserve an incomplete.  He’s still in the midst of the class, the test, the whatever you wish to call it.

And I agree..we should make our voices more heard.  Evidence shows that we are not really doing that as a whole.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread.

Herndon,

After being a seventh grade teacher for several years, Obama, like my students, often would see themselves in places where they wished to be when they reached a particular place. In other words, I often had children when asked: "Where do you feel that you stand in this class up to this point?" Whereas their response would be "I feel that I am an A" student or "B" student. Judging thier work and progress sometimes I could agree while at other times I smiled and in my own mind would say: "Keep dreaming but I shall not deter you."

So, sometimes, Herndon, is it wise to destroy a person's dream of themselves when we are only at the beginning?

Giving yet another analogy, I've seen plenty of football games played whereas it seemed that Team A would loose because Team B had a greater score in the beginning of the game... however at the end of the game, Team A wins. I just believe that Obama is Team A and began with major set backs that plagues his adminsitration. Personally, I think he scored himself too low because no other President with the exception of Kennedy managed to help to bring change so quickly within this country. What more do we expect during the course of change? Did we think that change was supposed to be something easy? What more do we want? Yes, the economy is terrible! Nevertheless, have you considered this one thing... What are the consequences of withdrawing the troops from everywhere? Are we prepared to face the challenges of bringing that many more soldiers back to a place where there is NO employment for them after they leave the military? Economically, if we look at it, has Obama not insisted on job stability for at least one sector of the country... the military? How many times have the Veterans Adminsitration been visited recently by people who say that Obama is so horrible for calling upon more troops?

Just how do we as Americans treat our Veterans?

Are the Veterans from the Persian Gulf employable or being employed? Are the Veterans from the Iraq Conflict being employed after their time is up? Have we, people who claim we want so many liberties, truly looked at the big picture?

If I were an advisor to Obama, and the nation needs to thank god that I am not, I would advise him this...

Give the people what they want!

Withdraw troops from EVERY base out there... Leave nothing unturned... bring everyone home! Since we have become so smug in our ideas, withdraw from everywhere and bring all of the soldiers home. Then, decrease the military!

Demand complete payment from all bailouts within a year. If this isn't accomplished, take over the banks.

Forget universal healthcare all together. Who cares if we are supposed to be a new age country. If you get sick and can't afford it... oh well! Pray that someone has pity on you!

Then, yes, one should truly be amazed that the President gave himself a grade of B+ because then we would give him an A+ because at that point he would be exactly like his predecessors! But if that is what you want out of him, remember, he can always oblige you and give you what you ask for. But what we are asking for takes times. Allow him to grade himself however he wants to, TIME tells the true story exactly like my seventh graders who were asked the same question. Is it achievable? Indeed it is. Because if we turn the equation around and ask "How do you grade yourself?" Just how owuld you grade you? I really pray that you would not grade yourself an "F" when, like you, like me, like everyone else, it just takes time to achieve the "A" and a "B+" should be how highly everyone thinks of themselves.

Royce and Terrance

On the surface your arguments make sense and I would initially be inclined to agree with you until Pres. Barack Obama himself found it within his infinite wisdom to grade himself a B+ on Oprah's Christrmas special on Sunday!?!?!

After 8 years of George W. chaos and the clean up that has to happen plus the aftermath of the AIG mess; the continued bank bailout where money goes in to help banks but no loans go out to help small businesses; and the huge multimillion dollar payouts to a few employee while the averge joe and his family goes homeless.

Meanwhile unemployment continues to jump into double digits across the nation and now Obama escalates the war in Afghanistan further with another $15-30B expense.  So if his grade is really an Incomplete and really should take 3 years to measure why can't the president himself see this and fess up as such on Oprah???  Instead he lavishes himself with a B+

Royce I agree wholeheartedly with you.   It would be s naive of us to think that Barrack can go into office and make the African Americans his first agenda item... not.   Even though he's the president he still has to play the game.   The amount of time  he has been in office he has done more than many presidents that proceeded him.    I don't think he's not concern with the major issue.  I believe he has to be strategic in what he does.  Lets see how things look in two years to see where he's going.  We have to give him time.  We also have to utilize our voice, as we're doing here, to let him know how we feel.

Jeff Johnson's Truth on TJMS

Jeff Johnson
If you are having difficulty hearing the audio, please click here to use a more compatible file format.
We'd like to call your attention to a commentary from yesterday's Tom Joyner Morning Show, from regular TJMS commentator Jeff Johnson.

Click here to listen to the interview! This brief clip includes commentary on the great lengths some factions went to in trying (unsuccessfully) to prevent Houston's election of an openly lesbian mayor, which leads Jeff Johnson to call out what he sees as a crisis caused by the African American community's unwillingness to be honest about its own homophobia.  The clip is less than six minutes long, but in that time Jeff speaks an awful lot of truth to those that may not always want to hear it.

Everything Im Not Made Me Everything I AmFor those that don't know his work, Jeff Johnson is a Washington, DC based journalist, activist and commentator.  He is the author of Everything I'm Not Made Me Everything I Am: Discovering Your Personal BEST and is chief correspondent for talk show The Truth With Jeff Johnson.

This clip is an example of the type of dialogue we need - open and honest, and a call to action asking the Black community to "stop being afraid, and start being willing to understand."  His willingness and courage in speaking truth to those who may not want to hear it is inspirational, energizing and deserving of our praise.
