Nina...
Does a postcard exist of Tjärnö or Saltö?...Tjärnö is a beautiful little
island near Strömstad where my father's uncle, Hilmer Hansson
(deceased), was the postmaster and schoolmaster...My father spent his
boyhood summers on Tjärnö...I believe Hilmer's sister (i.e. my father's
aunt) lived nearby in Skee and one of Hilmer's wives was born in
Skee...Hilmer is buried in the Tjärnö church graveyard (kyrkogård)...
About one year ago I downloaded a couple dozen stunning photographs of
Strömstad and surroundings from a web site whose URL I can no longer
remember...I could share them on the List's Home page, but I am hesitant
because I don't know if they were prohibited from redistribution by
whoever took them...As the moderator, I figured I'd first ask...What do
you think?...

I mixed up Östra Karup, sorry about that. It´s in Halland province, Lund diocese
and Skåne county. It´s a bit confusing, it´s right by the border, see
http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/bastad/ .
Yours Bo
Hej Skipp,
Some of these parishes have their own websites with pictures of their churches,
like Östra Karup http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/bastad/okyrka.htm , Slöinge
http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/sloinge/ , the German Church or Kristine
http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/tyska/ and Domkyrko/Gustavi
http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/gbgdomkyrko/ .
There´s a list of the parishes in Gothenburg diocese at
http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/sokforsamling/stiftresultat.asp?order=1 . Östra
Karup is in Lund diocese but in Halland county.

Good Morning: Do you have a site where I could get pictures of some churches
in Halland? Such as: Ost Karup, Laholm, Ranneslov, Skummeslov, or Sloinge?
My 5th 6th and 7th grandfathers were all vicars, and some served in the
Gustavi Domkyrko and Karl Johan Parish in Goteberg. One served in the Old
German Lutheran Church, and is buried in it. His name was Margraff. He had
sons, grandsons and sons in law that were all clergymen. MVH, Skipp from

Hi Larry!
This is a beginning. I took a copy of your old photo with me today
and went looking for the old house. Guess what!? It's still there
with a few changes. I climbed upon a fence,looked pretty silly (!!),
and managed to get the same angle as the old one. The new photo is
placed under "photos" and Stromstad. I do love digital cameras!!!
The correct address is Sodra (South) Bergsgatan 11. I don't know iff
it was earlier or later, but there was another shoe shop (Hellstroms
too) just a few meters away from your shop. This Hellstrom also had a
brother who I believe was a baker. Another Hellstrom wrote the famous
song "Kostervalsen". It's all waiting for you!!

Thank you Larry for your photo from the Hellstrom shoe shop in
Stromstad. Is this your own photo, or a postcard? Do you know who the
person at the photo are? Maybe someone local, from this list, could
tell you the address. You will find your photo placed under the
Stromstad map at the lists own page.
A member of this list, Jerry Longstrom, has his own page with
different photos from churches in Bohuslän.
Could you tell us more about your Sweden plans?

I would be interested in seeing postcards of Stromstad. Specifically, the
Stromstad Church, and any picture of a shoemaker names Johan Hellstrom. He
operated a shop in the period 1900-1920.
Thanks in advance for any leads.

Many probably wish that they could travel back in time, maybe see the
places where theire ancestors came from ......... well here is one
way to make your dreams come through!! At the lists homepage I've
started to add som old postcards. The first ones are from Stromstad
and Grebbestad, and I could add a lot more. But I would like each one
off you to "make a wish", tell me which places you would like to see!

This Sunday will mark the 100th anniversary of my grandfather's
emigration from Sweden. Karl Henriksson, age 18, accompanied by his
brother Johan, age 24, left Göteborg (Gothenburg) on March 10,
1902.
(Their brother Adolph had emigrated in 1900.) Their first stop was
England, where they then sailed from Liverpool, leaving on the
Campania (of the Cunard Line) on March 15. They arrived at Ellis
Island in New York on March 22. One record says that their
destination was Madison, Wisconsin; another lists Chicago.
Here is the link at ellisislandrecords.org to view the passenger
record:
http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/search/passRecord.asp?
MID=14886580210023947648&FNM=KARL&LNM=HENRICKSON&PLNM=HENRICKSON&RF=4&
pID=102738090197
Here is the link to view an enlargement of the original ship manifest
(see line 12, "Henrickson, Karl"):
http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/cgi-bin/tif2gif.exe?T=k:\t715-0261
\t715-02610370.tif&S=.5
Karl Viktor Henriksson was born on June 4, 1883, in the town of
Torbal, in Lur parish, northern Bohuslän (just south of the
Norwegian
border). On the ship manifest of the Campania, he is listed as "Karl
Henrickson." The spelling of his name later was changed to "Charles
Henrickson" (and "Viktor" somehow became "Wiktor").
Charles W. Henrickson settled in Chicago and became a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church of the Augustana Synod. He was a house
painter by trade and the landlord of several buildings. He and his
wife Alma had one son, Leroy Walfrid Henrickson, my father. Leroy
died when I was one year old. We lived next door to my grandparents,
and so Grandpa Henrickson became the man who had the most influence
on my life. He was a faithful Christian, active in his church, and a
good role model. He died at the age of 89 in November, 1972, when I
was 19.
Johan Henriksson moved back to Sweden, to Torbal, where at least two
of his grandchildren, Hans Henriksson and Kurt Henriksson, still
live. Adolph Henrickson became a pastor in the Augustana Synod. (In
fact, he was the pastor who baptized me.) The other siblings,
Josefina, Mathilda, and Halvord, all stayed in Sweden.
Much of this information I discovered in the last few days by doing
some searching on the Internet. The actual date of emigration I
found out just last night. I'm glad to have learned it in time for
the centennial this Sunday, and this is a nice way for me to
celebrate my 49th birthday today.

Someone sent me a e-mail address for Ulf. I told this person that Ulf was
my cousin. Since then my computer died and I'm starting all over. Will the
person who sent me Ulf e-mail address resend it, so I can add it to my
bookmark. I was asking about Bokenas, Goteborg Och Bohus where my
grandmother Agda C Andreasson was born she married Einar G Eriksson, who is
Ulf mother brother.
Thanks,

Hello David:
It is quite possible that Carl Axel von REIS is related to my family
lines. However, I have not followed the REIS line forward in time to the
late 1870s. He could be a descendant of Carl Olof REIS (see below).
Charlotta Sophia MANNERSTEDT (1761-????) b. Marstrand, Göteborg och Bohus,
Sweden.
married Olof von REIS (1771-????)
- 1799 Mar 17, Marriage of Charlotta Sophia TORNING, age 35, to Olaus von
REIS, age 28, on 17 Mar 1799 in Marstrand, Göteborg och Bohus län. The
notes state "Wife previously married - Additional data in original
record". Source: Family Search - Vital Records Index for
Sweden. (Note: This is probably Charlotta Sophia MANNERSTEDT, wife of
Olof REIS, who are known to have had 4 children from 1799 onward.)
1. Wilhelmina Sophia REIS (b. 1799 Feb 20, Marstrand, Göteborg och
Bohus län)
2. Carl Olof REIS (b. 1801 Mar 20, Marstrand, Göteborg och Bohus län)
3. Eric Lorentz REIS (1804 Mar 14, Marstrand, Göteborg och Bohus län)
4. Elizabeth Fredrica REIS (1806 Apr 29, Marstrand, Göteborg och Bohus
län)
Olof and Elizabeth's son:
Eric Lorentz REIS (1804-1864) Marstrand.
married Helena Christina ÅKERLUND (1813-????) Almunge, Uppsala län.
They had 4 daughters:
1. Fredrika Christina Wilhelmina REIS (b. 1835 Sep 09, Knivsta,
Uppsala län)
married Carl August Gustaf KYSEL
2. Thekla Mathilda REIS (b. 1837 Apr 30, Alsike, Uppsala län)
3. Carolina Helena Elizabeth REIS (b. 1840 Feb 02, Sollentuna,
Stockholm län)
married Adolf Fredrik LINDQVIST (1841-1907) Brunneby, Östergötland
län)
4. Aqvilina REIS (b. 1843 Nov 20, Danderyd, Stockholm län)
Thanks for your help.

Nina,
Wow! I have tried Familysearch so many times, but have never succeeded
in getting the forenames "Karl" and "Emmanuel" together. There was some
family folklore that he attended Uppsala University, but they were
unable to trace any records of him (maybe it was wishful thinking).
I will investigate further - many thanks for your time and trouble.
Kindest regards,

Ben,
I have some details of a Carl Axel von Reis or Reiss who was a resident
of Göteborg in 1871. He is noted in the Household Examination Protocol
of Kristine Parish as steam boat stoker. He moved to Kristine from
Kungsholmens parish, Stockholm, on 27th November 1871. There's also a
number of a certificate of change of address. He's said to be born in
Göteborg Garnisonsförsamlingen (Garrison parish), 15th October 1853.
Carl Axel is not a relative of mine (as far as I know), however it
appears that he came to London, England, possibly several times. He knew
my Great Grandfather, Carl Emmanuel Erickson.
I have a photograph of Carl Axel, which I will eMail to you off list, if
