Description

In the nineteenth century, the Booths reigned among the most noted tragedians in the U.S. After becoming a sensation in England, Junius Brutus Booth moved to Maryland and established himself as the greatest actor of his era. Three of his sons followed him in his choice of career. Junius, Jr. was an actor and a successful theater manager who built a succession of playhouses in the American West. Edwin Booth grew up supporting his father in minor parts, but in adulthood was among the most successful actors of his era, and the age's definitive Hamlet. A third son, John Wilkes Booth, earned rave reviews across the country for his acting, and was among the highest-paid actors of the Civil War years. Of course, he is more infamous for his assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865.

This list is intended as a gathering-place for all those interested in Booth family history, which would extend to all of Junius's six surviving children and their descendents. For the most part, the list-owner's interest is in their theatrical history and in the historical record of the family. Though thoughtful discussion of the politics of the day will be welcomed, this list will not tolerate flames or any gratuitous racist remarks, or excessive off-topic discussion. Please keep that in mind before posting.

There is a good selection of books on the subject of the Booths, particularly John Wilkes Booth. Please share your personal reading list and your opinions on those selections.

Welcome!
