Wikipedia has a handy list of National Register properties in Buffalo with
thumbail photos & geographic coordinates. I don't know who has taken it upon
themselves to maintain it, but considering how much the pace of National
Register nominations has increased in response to the new preservation tax
credit program, it could get outdated pretty easily.

That's the kind of machine that Lulu.com uses. They charge around $350 for
digitization, if I remember correctly.
I have a couple of books I've considered it for.

I know the company. Based near Rochester (as Dale guessed), they make high-end
book-friendly scanners that probably cost five figures. I saw one demonstrated
at a conference last year.

The machine cradles the book, lights and photographs it from above, corrects for
various irregularities, and turns the pages with puffs of air or a vacuum, I
can't remember which. You can set it up and walk away without worrying that
your prized first edition will get damaged like it would on a flatbed scanner.
This is the kind of machine that makes mass digitization possible. So it makes
sense for them to start retailing digitized books.

The quality of the end product is what I'm dying to know about.

I may not have read it carefully enough, but it seemed to me you didn't get
a CD, but rather a link to a digitized and downloadable version. It cost
$10 initially, but I got the impression that if you wanted to re-access it,
once digitized for you, then it was $1.95. Also, for the same $10, you
could get a soft-cover print version

Kirtas Books has print-on-demand arrangements with several libraries, including
the New York Public. A reprint of the 1872 Hopkins atlas of Buffalo (and many
other public domain Buffalo books) from NYPL's collection can be had for $1.95.
I have no connection to the company, so I have no clue as to the quality of the
end product. I cannot fathom how $1.95 even covers paper, ink, and labor.

CALL FOR WORK: RUST BELT REELS, A NIGHT OF SHORT FILMS BY WOMEN

The Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender invites
original shorts from women filmmakers living in the Rust Belt region.

Buffalo, NY is indelibly marked by the booming birth and excruciatingly slow
death of the manufacturing industry in the United States. Rust permeates our
architecture, our politics and our economy, as well as our daily lives and
the art that we create. This screening poses the broad question: Does this
slow rusty death--this creaky slam of factory gates--engender a particular
voice, sound, shape, color, environment, his/herstory, mood or texture? We
will consider 3 to 10 minute films of any genre that provide some commentary
on or offer some interpretation of life and/or art of and by women living in
a Rust Belt city.

About the event:
For the fifth year in a row, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender
presents a collection of recent original short work by women filmmakers.
Taking as its broad theme the concept of the Rust Belt, this year's films
will continue the mission to confound narrow, mainstream perceptions of
women's cinema in order to excite, provoke, and challenge. This is a cinema
of the women, by the women and for everybody!
*
Deadline for screeners (to be considered for inclusion): February 10th, 2010
Deadline for completed work: March 5th, 2010
Theme: Rust Belt Reels
Format: DVD or MiniDV for screeners & MiniDV for exhibition

Event Date: March 25th, 2010
Venue: Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre
639 Main Street, Buffalo, NY.
Duration of Works: 3-10 mins*

We prefer to consider work that has not yet been exhibited extensively inWestern
New York

An annual Christmas column mentioning Old Downtown Buffalo and blind
robins.*

WHAT CHRISTMAS DOES TO ME.*

Some of my friends don't like Christmas music. I love it.
I can understand how certain Christmas songs could seem corny
when analyzed from a critical point of view,
but they have melody, harmony, and words,
which is more than a lot of today's popular music.

Anyway, I love Christmas music for completely different reasons.
This is the most emotional season of the year,
and those songs bring back powerful memories,
both happy and unhappy, packed with emotion.

The ghosts of past Christmases often blur my vision in December.
My mind travels back to Christmas shopping with my parents
on snowy evenings in magical downtown Buffalo.
Gentle flurries fell from the dark sky, steam rose from sidewalk grates,
and complete strangers laughed and spoke friendly greetings to each other.
We stood and marveled at the Christmas displays in the store windows,
our breath frost highlighting our amazement.
One store had a big mechanical Santa that sort of rolled as he laughed.
Ho ho.

My family was a partying bunch...
each holiday an excuse for all the relatives to get together and have a
special time.
Even my grandparents would dress in outrageous costumes on Halloween,
and on July 4th's we would drive the neighbors nuts with fireworks.
New Years Eve meant champagne and "blind robins", and on and on.
I miss those beautiful people, especially during the holidays.
Later in my life I experienced some very rough Christmases,
some even tragic,
and also some wonderful times with Misty and the small family we had left.

Every experience at this time of year is magnified and extreme in my
memory.
Hearing the old songs at Christmas makes me happily sad.
They evoke feelings I don't even understand,
and yet it's my favorite time of the year.
My cool guy facade cracks right down the middle,
and my sentimental guy takes over.

We caught the last hour of "It's a Wonderful Life" on TV the other night.
We both sat there like idiots with lumps in our throats and tears in our
eyes
when George Bailey got his life back.
Christmas makes me weak, I guess...
a good kind of weakness.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this fascinating article.

How may I reach Mr. Wachadlo via e-mail? I would like very much to share
with him the intense research I have completed on J & R Lamb Studios and
Charles Rollinson Lamb and Frederick Stymetz Lamb. A great deal of the
historical facts I have compiled on the Lamb family are not currently
available via regular sources, as they have either come from the family
historian, Kevin Tait, or from my own digging, and my book has not yet been
printed. (Hopefully, it will be done in January!)

If you would rather give my e-mail address to Mr. Wachadlo and allow him to
make contact with me, I certainly understand, and that is fine.

Thank you so very much!

Sincerely,

Randal J. Loy

Found while looking up other stuff, a social networking site for genealogists.
And there's already a group for Buffalo/WNY.

Jack,

Can you confirm the trucks were tan on top and brown on the
bottom? Or were they all brown?

Thank you.

At one point, some of them were occupied by Downtown Merchants
delivery service.

You brought back a memory.
When I was about 16 I worked for Downtown Merchants Delivery during one
Christmas season.
I had to show up every morning at the Pierce Arrow building.
I was the kid who jumped on and off the truck to deliver packages.

As an aid to gathering historical information on Lawrence Bell and Bell Aircraft
in Western NY (and elsewhere), we started a group on Yahoo

It's called "Larry Bell and Bell Aircraft"

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=184570831587

If you are a FaceBook sort of person, you're welcome to join. We were VERY
surprised to find that there are now 45 members and that some awfully
interesting documents and photos are showing up.

This research is ongoing, and we've received two off-list responses to our
request for folks who worked at Bell, knew people who worked at Bell or who had
some first of second person contact with Larry Bell. We'd be grateful for other
such contacts.

You can write to SumStuf@... or post on the FaceBook group if you are a
member. Please DO NOT post replies to this Yahoo BuffaloHistory group. They
would be off-topic and we'd be embarrassed.

Thanks for your help!
