Newly discovered online in full text: the 1855 Buffalo business
directory. Great place to look up pre-Civil War companies,
factories, etc. To the best fo my knowledge, this is Buffalo's
first-ever business directory.

I'll bet I am not the only person who is secretly relieved that
someone else (Denver) is having blizzard dramas lately.
Meanwhile, Buffalo continues to be unseasonably warm and
snow-free. I am biking to work in 30-50F temperatures.

Yes but if there ever is a cold snap, we could get dumped on due to the
un-frozen lake.

Further, some trees and some floral items may start up and would be killed
off by a cold snap.

Finally, I don't wanna cut the grass in February. That's for FL and CA
people.

I agree completely. I appreciate the extended biking season and
no shoveling as much as anyone else.

But the larger picture is that global warming has the potential
to destroy local horticulture and agriculture, as species are
damaged by the wrong temperatures at the wrong times and cannot
germinate, by the migration of molds, fungi and pests to
climates that were once too cold for them, and so on.

No farming? No dinner. It is that simple.

Hello Everyone,

For all those who maybe interested in Civil War history.

A local Civil War group, will be giving a special presentation on
January 20th, as they celebrate Robert E. Lee's - 200th Birthday
anniversary.

Robert E. Lee, was an American hero, who served in the military for
40 years, (36 yrs in the US Military) and serving his last 4 years
as an General in the Confederacy.

Rumor has it, that Robert E Lee had pasted through Buffalo during
the late 1830's or early 1840's (possibly visiting the Buffalo
Barricks), but I have not found anything to support that, but Lee
had a very colorful service serving in the US Engineers, US Cavalry
and led a small force of US Marines at Harper's Ferry, VA in 1859 to
capture John Brown, prior the Civil War.

New York history related....
Lee graduated from West Point, and later returned during the 1850's
to served as Commadant of the Academy. Also spent time in NY City,
building up harbor defenses.

I will not boar some of you, regarding his Civil War service, but
you only turn 200 years old once !

If anyone is interested in a excellent first person presentation,
given by Dick Crozier, to honor Robert E. Lee's 200th Birthday
Anniversary - please feel free to contact me, I would be happy to
pass along information regarding this presentation, that will be
given on January 20th

Tickets are needed prior to presentation, so if anyone is
interested, please contact me ASAP or by January 16th, to assure
tickets will be available.

Tickets, will include: Catered dinner & Presentation

This presentation will be held in Clarence, NY

Thank you for your time everyone,
Hope to see some of you there

GRANTS AVAILABLE
DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 2007

The Architecture, Planning and Design Program of the New York
State Council on the Arts is pleased to announce the
availability of project grants for professionals in the design,
planning and historic preservation fields through its
Independent Projects Category.

Grants of up to $10,000 will be available for architects,
landscape architects, planners, designers, historic
preservationists and scholars to realize specific projects that
advance the field and contribute to the public’s understanding
of the designed environment. The development of design
prototypes, historical studies of building types, theoretical
design studies or texts, or explorations of new technology in
the design fields are all welcome. The program is particularly
interested in innovative ideas being explored outside of
traditional practice. Individuals whose work is not broadly
known are encouraged to apply.

Projects may relate to any of the disciplines the program
covers, including: architecture; architectural history;
landscape architecture; urban and rural planning; urban design;
historic preservation; graphic design; and industrial design.

Only New York State residents are eligible to apply. Tuition or
projects being done in pursuit of an academic degree will not be
funded. NYSCA funds cannot be used for out-of-state travel

group if necessary.

The deadline to register a request on line through a nonprofit
sponsor is March 1st, 2007.

I am trying to recover some time capsules in the old Hens and Kelly

This week I represented my employer at an educators event at
WNED, in which the new Frank Lloyd Wright DVD and curriculum
guide were presented to area teachers.

A teacher that I met told me that she used to work at the Youth
Detention Center. She once had the kids do a project to
research and draw Buffalo's great buildings. Afterwards, some
of the kids told her that if they'd known how important our
architecture was, they wouldn't have spraypainted all those
buildings.

An architectural education can have some very concrete (pun
intended) payoffs.

Maybe the ten cents I remember at the Salvation Army was to pay for our crafts.
We
would get to paint plaster plaques they made. Catholics got Mary and Protestants
got
Jesus. I also remember making etched glass. We would put a template on a glass
or
cup and put some chemical stuff on it to etch our initials. It was fun, and
something to do on a summer day.

They told us Bible Stories and I went home and asked my parents if that was okay
because I was Catholic at the time. My parents said it was okay<g>. We really
should
have been learning those Bible Stories in Catholic school...

I bet you didn't take your son shopping again for a while<g>.

I lost contact with St. Aloysius years ago, but I had a friend Joe Hayden take
pictures
for the website I did about the early days at St. Aloysius.

http://home.tampabay.rr.com/centans/staloysius.html

What has St. Al's been like the past 20 years? Do they still have those nuns of
St.
Joseph with the black habits and huge bibs? Are there any families there that
were there
in the 1950s? We left in 1961 when I was in sixth grade and have not been
back. I only
know one person anymore that I knew then, Bob Hoover who lived across the street
- it
was his sister who walked me home from St. Al's. It would be fun to contact
those in my
class of 1964.

There are very few nuns teaching in the school now but they are Felician
Sisters. (Tan dresses or suits with white trim/blouses.) I'm sure there are
still some families that go back to 1961 or before. They put out an album
(families had portraits done, which they could buy if they wished and they were
included in this album). I'll look around tomorrow and see if I can find it.
The
long time pastor (Father Beissinger) was accused of molesting a (female)
member of his beloved flag team....his successor (Richard DiGulio) couldn't move
the parish past it. (I called him Doom and Gloom---he was always threatenting
to close the school if he didn't get more money on Sundays.) The current
pastor (Peter Popaduke) is absolutely wonderful. He seems almost saintly.....no
matter what the problem is, his attitude is "Don't worry! We'll find a way."
He is sooooo thin though....every time I see him I just want to feed him!

Driving home at night from the south, entering Buffalo via Rte 5
skyway, noticing the hulking empty grain elevators, I'm struck by the
bright lights & action of the General Mills elevators & complex. This
one area must look like Buffalo once looked when all the grain
operations were active. Can anyone explain why GM is still in
operation? Why do they hang on? Why did all the other grain ops close,
but GM continues? Are there GM subsidies? Is this still a prime
location for this operation?

Cynthia, Thank you so much for passing this along...I've just signed
up for the event on Feb. 24. I am FINALLY coming home to visit--I've
been away for 44 years and I'm really looking forward to it. I will
be stopping in the main library to do some research, so I hope to get
a chance to see you there.

often smelled them! Wonderful smell!!

Back in the 90's when I worked at Fisher-Price, a co-worker's husband worked
there, but for the flour mill. The flour business was much less profitable
than the cereal business, and the workers had a completely different package
- may even have been represented by a different union.

My faulty memory may be manufacturing this, but I think the flour milling
may have been abandoned a few years back.

We lived near the Northtown Plaza Hens and Kelly and
my Mother worked there for a short time in the 70's
ond 80's until it became AMAS. I remember seeing
Mr.Kelly around the Northtown store, but I don't
remember ever hearing of the Hens family. I love
hearing about the history of heyday of Buffalo's great
department stores!! I hope the historical society
will get the display the time capsule I would love to
see it!!
