Folks,

This has been on the L. A. list serve, but not posted more widely. Ann
and Eric Brooks photographed a "mystery sparrow" at Kenneth Hahn State
Recreation Area in the Baldwin Hills of central Los Angeles, LA Co.,
yesterday (19 April); their photographs were circulated to a number of
southern California birders and the bird was identified unanimously as a
Field Sparrow (of the expected, dull western arenacea subspecies). The
bird was not re-found later in the day, and nobody has reported it yet
today (20 April). Photos were posted to the LACoBirds site under the
"Mystery Birds" folder (#99).

Specific directions as posted to LACoBirds by Ann and Eric Brooks are:

"It was found on the upper, east side of the park, end of the paved
road, north of the restroom and parking lots, north of the small radio
towers, in a grassy/gazania patch between the bowl and the drop off to
La Brea. It flew up to a Coyote bush, then to the fence around the
small utility building, posed for 4 shots, up into a small pepper tree,
then down over the side towards La Brea. We did not refind it.

It's in an area where we have been putting out birdseed for our
wintering sparrows, so we're hoping it likes the food and will stay a
bit.

We'd like some help refinding it, obviously!"

The park is along the east side of La Cienega Blvd. between Slauson (to
the south) and Rodeo (to the north); there is a parking fee on weekends.

Obviously if the bird is re-found a note will be posted to Calbirds.

Late report for 4/18/12 Two of us heard a Chuck Will's widow at Covington Park
in San Bernadino Co. It started calling at about 7:50 PM from a cottonwood on
the East side of the tennis courts just before the swings. It called for approx
4 minutes stopped and started again. I tried to call the report in and unsure if
my number was right. I do have multiple experiences with this species. I would
love for someone to try to relocate to confirm his bird as unable to get a photo
or visual. We had to leave the bird due to time limits.

I saw the Humboldt County Smith's Longspur this evening between 1844-1905
when it was flushed by a vehicle. I arrived at the "Blind Spot" sign about 5:15
to 5:30 and neither saw nor heard any bird until I turned my car around.
The bird flew across the road about 25 feet in front of me and landed in
the short grass and wildflowers on the downill side of the road. Although the
light wasn't great, I was able to observe it long enough in bits and pieces to
be sure. Just as it came out into full view a truck flushed it and drove into
the posted part of the road.

I must say I'm in love with Elysian Park.
Along the Elysian trail I was able to get a long glimps at a male Western
Tanager.
For a new birder, it's extra exciting for me to find and identify a new bird and
to see the Western Tanager was exceptionally nice because of its beauty. I may
become a tour guide for this trail.
Happy birding. David signing off from Glendale California.

My hubby and myself and another friend headed to the mountains on Friday to hunt
the elusive morel mushroom, and got caught in that epic 6 hour traffic jam on
I-80. Good thing that I brought my binocs! ;)

In our attempts to circumvent gridlock, we drove just about every country and
frontage road imaginable, and we saw lots of raptors, including a Ferruginous
hawk and a Swainson's hawk carrying nesting material to its nest along a remnant
riparian patch (can't really call it a corridor, since it went nowhere).

At the ironically named "Birds Landing" we saw a windmill farm...guess they
gotta put these up everywhere the hawks fly.
Kinda depressing, but at least they weren't as thick as up at the Altamount, the
biggest alt-energy killers of raptors anywhere in the lower 48...a dubious
distinction.

After leaving our house at dawn, we finally hit the Sierra at noon, and yes, we
found some morels, with a side dish of some unexpected bucolic birding to boot.

Hi all,

I'm working with PRBO Conservation Science this spring to map and census
heron/egret/cormorant rookeries throughout southwestern California (Goleta to
San Diego, inland to the mountains). With the help of some expert contacts and
BBA/ebird info, I've compiled a list of known recent/current sites, as well as
some suspected ones below, by county.

If anyone has recent information on the "suspected" sites and would be willing
to share this information, please pass it along. You will be acknowledged in the
report, and will help guide our searches during May and June. (I'm not including
Santa Barbara/Ventura below since I have a good handle on those sites.)

And, if you are interested in helping census any of these sites this spring,
please contact me offline.

Thanks for you time,

Hi all,

Sophie Webb reported a Northern Gannet from Southeast Farallon Island earlier
this morning (found by Peter Warzybok). Photos are on Facebook, though hopefully
they'll be posted elsewhere eventually so more folks can see them. Looks like an
adult. Evidently circled around a bit before disappearing into the fog.

I'm unaware of any Pacific Ocean records for this species. Not exactly one I was
expecting to show up in California!

Why is it not an Australasian Gannet?
I closed my FaceBook account years ago, so I assume that I can't look at the
photos.

Tom,

Both Australasian and Cape Gannets have a dark trailing edge to the secondaries
that Northern Gannet lacks. The photo is clearly a Northern Gannet. One of the
most remarkable seabird records yet for CA.

Amazing record.

Presumably the bird got blown across Mexico (and into the Pacific) by a

Or via Nicaragua (San Juan River to Lago Nicaragua, from which a soaring bird
can see the Pacific), or the Panama Canal (on a ship?). Elegant Terns probably
get across the other direction similarly.

An origin via the Gulf of Mexico is not the only possibility. With increasing
open water in the Arctic during summer, it is now possible for birds to move
more easily from Atlantic to Pacific waters "across the top". I do not have the
details at hand, but there were some records of N. Gannet on the north coast of
Alaska last year.

Maybe this is the one that our folks saw in the offshore northeastern
Chukchi Sea in 2010. Unfortunately, we never were able to get a photo.
Other scientists saw it a few days later near Barrow.

The Northwest Passage was open that summer, and we suspect that the Gannet
came through then, perhaps following some ships? There also were records of
Great Black-backed Gull on the North Slope that same summer.

Birders,

The weather forecast for Saturday's Santa Barbara pelagic has been marginal for
the last couple of days. The Thursday afternoon NOAA update has worsened, and
Capt Matt has decided to weather out the trip.

We made it out the last two years and saw Murphy's Petrels on both trips, with
good numbers of Cook's Petrels on one trip. Both Cook's and Murphy's have been
seen off CA already this spring,so it is disappointing to have to weather the
trip.

Our next deepwater trip is July 21, and while we don't see Murphy's Petrels in
July, we have had some spectacular numbers of Cook's Petrels then, as well as
lots of other goodies. The weather is usually much more cooperative in July.

Ahoy Seabirders,

Monterey Seabirds will be venturing out to sea in three weeks on Sunday,
May 20. This is the only trip running out of Monterey this spring. Our
prior spring trips have yielded such rarities as MURPHY'S PETRELS
(2009), HORNED and TUFTED PUFFINS (2007), LAYSAN (2010) and SHORT-TAILED
ALBATROSSES (2007). Trip reports at:
http://montereyseabirds.com/SeabirdTripReports.htm

AL Jaramillo has reported a spectacular season for MANX SHEARWATERS in
Chile this year, they were seen on nearly every pelagic out of
Valparaiso starting in February. They should be heading northward. It
will be interesting to see if they show up here in Monterey Bay this spring.

We have also had good luck in seeing transient-type Killer Whales on our
spring trips. This May trip will be taking place during the peak time
for seeing them out of Monterey.

Online registration and details can be found on our website:
http://www.montereyseabirds.com or you can call and reserve your spot:
831 375 4658.
Cost is $130 pp.

We've got a Facebook page up too if you care to visit.

Coincidentally, yesterday I was at a presentation on effects of plastic-bag
waste (in support of a proposed ban on single-use plastic bags in Humboldt
County) and the presenter (not a birder) showed a slide of a dead bird that
looked like a gannet. The slide was labeled Glendora, CA (which isn’t even
coastal). I’m attempting to follow up on that and will post my findings if I
come up with anything of note.
