Asian Film Series, Batang West Side
Lav Diaz's film epic that follows a Filipino police detective
investigating
the murder of a young Filipino immigrant freshly arrived in the United
States found dead on West Side Avenue, Jersey City. As the detective
questions the victim's family, friends and suspected killers, he
recalls his
past life as a government agent sent to kill student activist leaders
in
downtown Manila's university belt. As the story unfolds, one comes to
know
some of the people at the center or periphery of his life, each
representing
his salvation or damnation - sometimes both at the same time. Beyond
that,
Diaz gives us an overview of the Filipino-American community, both its
functional and dysfunctional members.

An Untold Triumph, presented by the Philippine American Friendship

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary Film at the 2002

Telly
Awards, this landmark piece documents and honors the 7,000 men of the
1st
and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments of the US Army who fought in
World War
II in the Philippines. Director Noel Izon intimately captures their
stories
through the voices of the veterans, less than half of whom are still
alive
today. Actor Lou Diamond Phillips provides the sensitive narration and
Charlie Barnett's original orchestral score enhances the immediacy of
these
stories.

Please join us for our first Membership and Community Meeting of 2005

reception, we've increased your chances to interact with people who
have similar interests by holding two receptions - one before and
one after our meeting. Filipino food and beverage will be served.

For the first time, you have the opportunity to raise the visibility
of your respective organizations and/or businesses in the Community
Forum portion of our meeting.

Also, for your viewing pleasure, Pinoy sketch comedy artists from
Mr. Miyagi's Theatre Company will be in attendance to put on a free
performance of their show "Sides", which has been hailed by the Wall
Street Journal as "high-speed, whip-smart comedy". "Sides" is the
spring production of the Ma-Yi Theatre Company.

Finally, you'll have a chance to meet the new officers, stay
informed about CORE's programs as well as learn how you can propose
new projects and collaborations.

We're constantly looking for ways to improve our organization and we
look forward to getting to know you, your interests, your pursuits
and your suggestions for the organization.

We hope to see you there!

"We hope that through the experiences shared by the panelists and
connections made at the event, attendees will be inspired," says
CORE Chair Vladimir Manuel. "CORE members see a "symbiotic"
relationship between personal success and the success of the
Filipino American community as a whole. When a kababayan does well,
it is also our success as a community. When we succeed as a group,
we believe more opportunities open up for other community
members to succeed personally and professionally."

Sharon Crame, co-project leader for the program, adds, "Success
stories told by great leaders help the event's young professional
attendees gain self-empowerment. CORE is proud to organize this
high impact event as one of the many ways we can give back to our

Philippine Consul General and Young Professionals Group Prepare to
Shine Philippine Colors in New York

New York - Only once a year can Filipinos in the area be able to catch
a glimpse of their flag's colors proudly shining over Manhattan. And
only once a year can Filipinos become part of one powerfully inspiring
event that connects them to distinguished members of the community and
to other young professionals.

This special event happens on June 15, 2005, when the Empire State
Building will be lit in the colors of the Philippine flag for the
second year in a row. The Philippines is the first and only Southeast
Asian nation to have the colors of its flag displayed atop the
historic New York skyscraper. Collaborative Opportunities for Raising
Empowerment, Inc. (CORE) initiated the tradition last year to
celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of the Filipino
American community.

"This special lighting of the Empire State Building in the colors of
the Philippine flag has become a source of pride among Filipinos in
New York and all over the world. This is a great tribute to the whole
Filipino American community. I therefore encourage our kababayans to
consider the month of June when planning their visit to New York, not
only for the many Philippine Independence Day festivities in this
city, but more so to witness the Philippines beam the Manhattan
skyline from one of the most famous landmarks in the world," Consul
General Rebong said. "Our greatest appreciation to CORE and the
Empire State Building for making this annual event possible," she
added.

The lighting ceremony on June 15th, to be held at the Philippine
Center, will be hosted by the Philippine Consul General and the young
professionals of CORE. The event, which starts at 6pm, will be topped
off by "Harnessing Individual Successes Toward Collective
Empowerment," CORE's annual gathering where young professionals enjoy
the opportunity to network with fellow professionals from different
industries. The event will highlight a panel of accomplished Filipino
Americans who will be sharing their empowering experiences and
inspiring stories to attendees: Laarni Almendrala Ragaza, an associate
editor for widely-circulated PC Magazine; Eric T.S. Gonzales, an
entrepreneur and co-founder of AppSecInc; and the Honorable US Civil
Court Judge John S. Lansden.

"We hope that through the experiences shared by the panelists and
connections made at the event, attendees will be inspired," says CORE
Chair Vladimir Manuel. "CORE members see a "symbiotic" relationship
between personal success and the success of the Filipino American
community as a whole. When a kababayan does well, it is also our
success as a community. When we succeed as a group, we believe more
opportunities open up for other community members to succeed
personally and professionally."

Sharon Crame, co-project leader for the program, adds, "Success
stories told by great leaders help the event's young professional
attendees gain self-empowerment. CORE is proud to organize this high
impact event as one of the many ways we can give back to our
community."

Seats at the event are limited and attendee registration is on a
first-come first-serve basis. Registrations can be made online at the
CORE website (www.core-nyc.org), where tickets will remain $35 until
June 8th. Ticket prices are $45 thereafter.

For more information about "Harnessing Individual Successes Toward
Collective Empowerment" and the lighting of the Empire State Building
(June 15 and 16), please contact Sharon Crame at jcrame@...,
or Janette Lachica at minette_l@....

Dear CORE Members and Friends,

This is another reminder for celebrating Philippine Independence in a different way, the lighting of the Empire State Building (ESB) in New York City in the primary colors of the Philippine flag. Among the many celebrations that are organized by the Filipino American community, this is one that reaches every corner of the world -- and one that is organized by young professionals.

This year, the ESB lighting ceremony will be held at the Philippine Center at 556 Fifth Avenue in NYC and is co-hosted by the Philippine Consulate General in New York. A great networking opportunity, current registrants cover every single industry: financial services, information technology, law, consulting, project management, marketing, media, arts, not-for-profit, government, architecture, engineering, etc.

My organization, CORE, is also partnering with various organizations that include Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI); Filipinos in Information Technology Group (FITG); www.fanclubx.com; Philippine New York Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees); Coalition for Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA); Filipino American Human Services, Inc.; Filipino American Women's Network (FAWN); Filipino Young Professionals-NYC; Ramon Gil Art & Design; NYC 2012; and others.

Please see the press release below and circulate among friends. Deadline for registration is tomorrow night, June 8. Suggested donation is $35.00 until then but if you aren’t sure if you can attend, you may still register at the door. For full-time students, suggested donation is $25.00. These are suggested … if you can give more, that would be great as it helps us cover costs. Income from the event go toward our programs which includes READ Philippines,
an outreach program that helps to educate the community about Filipino culture by donating books written by Filipino and Filipino American authors to the New York Public Library system.

I sure hope to see you there to celebrate Philippine Independence, keep abreast of each other's activities, and help build a stronger community.

Sincerely,
Vladimir "Vee-Jay" Manuel
