Hi !

There's also a guy called Markus (Whatshisname) in Germany who is
reallly good. You should try to find one of the vids of his 2
devilstick show. He's quite amazing.

the Sticks at hotstix.biz are based off of Bill Vestal's design with
crystal stix (which do use silicon) thestycks (the creaters name on
crystal-stix.com messageboard) says they play like a pair of
superflites, and it looks like he modified a pair for fire and sells
them, email him at thestycks@... and ask him about them.

Thanks, I think you mean Markus Furtner. I saw a vid of him doing a 2
devilstick routine, while Thomas Dietz is standing next to him doing a 5
ball routine. He did some of the best devilsticking i ever saw. He's great.

I was going to use rubber or something that has a good grip, but any
suggestions will be appreciated. It doesn't have to look good, as
long as it works.

I just joined this forum. I've been devilsticking for about 9 months and am
thinking of getting another devilstick. Something that's good for performing
and practicing. Currently I'm using a Todd Smith Cloth Devilstick.
I hear Dube is good, but are there other brands in the US that are just as
good or better?
I'd appreciate any opinions anyone may have as to what makes a good
devilstick

I'm also looking at Fire Devilsticks. Any recommendations there?

Thanks

I personally think the best fire devilsticks are AJAs (Advanced Juggling
Apparatus). They're made in Germany and I bought a couple sets when I lived in
England, but I have seen them on sale at US online juggling stores.

on second thought, if i were in your situation, i would buy some
silicon handsticks that are the lenght of the baton i wanted
(excluding the length of the wicks) slip the silicon off (its hard to
do with some brands so be careful. The ones on crystal stix are super
easy) Then find some wood or metal tubing that will fit snugly into
the silicon. then shove it in and nail on some wicks. you can either
make them out of kevlar cloth available at juggling stores, or buy
them premade. check
https://secure.homeofpoi.com/shop/listItems.php/fire/22/poi/298
standard handsticks should work, and if you want you could just cutt
off some silicon and add a wick.

not sure if any of that made sense but i hope it helps.

I thought that sounded like a good idea too, so I went ahead and made
a fire stick just like that. The results were terrible.

Problems with silicone covered fire sticks:
  * Silicone on silicone gives fantastic traction until a little bit of
soot gets on either stick. Then its like ice skating. No traction
    at all.

Problems with metal tubing:
  * It retains and conducts heat, so even though the stick
was only lit near the ends, the middle got really hot.
  * It vibrates and feels awful compared to wood.

Problems overall:
  * The balance sucked. It was much too slow and hard to spin.

I've made other fire sticks since then that are a bit better (wood
core instead of metal), but I haven't found a recipe I like yet.

Have you tried surgical silicon (instead of regular silicon) on both
fire and hand sticks, it didn't melt and has almost no problems with
friction (bit of a bitch to get on though), your other problem with
soot may be due to the fuel your using? maybe try a more pure fuel.
It can create less crap that causes the friction problems. We had
some success when using this while i was in Aus. We found the
woodern core works also, but it didnt prove to be very long term
(eventually goes funky), we never got round to a cost effective long
term version.

Hope this is some help, maybe not!!!

Sorry to multi post but i had a possible other thought, we also
tried using silicon on the hand stick and roughing up the metal on
the fire sticks, we however spent a lot of time with knifes and sand
paper to try and get a rough usable sufface?!?

My name is kyle, I have been using lunastix for about two years now.
I don't have any experience with flower or devil stix because I live

so anyways I thought I would just let you know who I was and stuff.

looking at those fire sticks at hotstix, i would guess that they roll
pretty bad. their general agility is probably better than a regular
club type stick, but without the tassels (the flower aspect of the
flower stick) the roll would be similar to the untasseled type. I
have been working on a design for a true "tasseled fire stick," but
as yet have no working prototype. when a final product has been
tested and accepted by me, you guys will be among the first to know.

i see that your performance has already passed. i hope it went well,
and that this info may be useful in the future:

i use normal handsticks for fire, and have for years. they are 20"
long, 3/8 diameter wrapped in black latex tube, which brings the
diameter to 1/2" (i think, it may be 3/8" total.) 20" is a bit
longer than what i had once used for non fire stuff, the extra 2
inches is a small but comfortabe increase. I've never had a problem
with them burning, at least not too much. if you were to try any
sort of fireproofing such as aluminum tape or similar things, you
would loose enough traction that it would probably be more dangerous
that a little charred lates, or bike tube.

i'm not actually looking at mine right now, but they are, in 27
inches in length the diameter at the ends is about an inch, and in
the middle about half that. i will measure them exactly some time
soon, but i'm fairly sure this is accurate. as for the handsticks, i
use hardwood dowels wrapped either in latex tubeing (surgical tube)
or a bicycle inner tube cut into 2 long strips. i like them to have
a final diameter of 1/2 inch, so if you use latex, keep that in mind.

i ahve also seen devil sticks made entirely from wood and bike
tubes. to do this, start with a 1/2 inch hardwood dowel and then
build up the ends to taper like an all wood devil stick. it is very
very important that you use the same ammount of material on each
side, so that it will be properly balanced. Also, using some sort of
extra weight such as lead fishing weights might help the sticks feel
more like an all wood stick, since the rubber will be lighter than
the wood. the only problem i saw with the sticks made this way was
that they were a little bouncy. i think that if you address the
weight problem, the bounce problem will decrease or disappear. in
any event, if you have no access to a lathe, or a person to use it,
this alternative is certainly better than nothing.

i hope this helps,

if the roughed metal worked well, you could save time with a metal
rasp. it will make short work of the metal and should only cost
about bucks or so.

the aluminum tape that dube uses on its fire sticks, though far from
ideal is acceptable when used with the silicone tubing they wrap
their handsticks in. its all over if it gets wet though, not that
that would generally be a problem.

Speaking of rasps.. I actually tried using a couple rasps as handsticks
on my kevlar fire stick. Roughed up metal on cloth seemed like a good
idea, but the roughness wasn't coarse enough to make much difference.
I think anything prickly enough to grip would also tear up the fabric.

it also seems like the rasps would be shaped all funny for
handsticks. that is, too small a diameter, and too short. the rasp
i once used for roughing up my wood handsticks was less than 1/4"
across, and about 12" long. novel idea, though. i use dube
handsticks for everything now: fire, devil, and even homemade
sticks. whenever i decide to make the plunge, and by a roll of that
tubing, i'll be using that design with the sets i sell.

on that point, does anyone have any experience with silicone on
silicone. if the handsticks and center stick aree both covered in
silicone is it too sticky?

I don't think the diameter matters much. They were certainly too
short, but I was just trying them out. If the surface worked well,
I'd try to figure out how to make longer handles for them.

Does it come as tubing? I thought they extruded it right onto the
dowel.

It is pretty sticky and is a bit weird to use. Unless there's fire,
of course, in which case it's really slippery.

you can get latex on a roll from a variety of sources. i'm not
certain how well this would work. initially, i was under the
impression that dube used latex, so all of my research into suppies
was to that end. i think latex would work fairly well, but may
perhaps be a little less durable than silicone.

here's a link to a latex supplier:
http://www.primelineindustries.com/
i just found a silicone source as well, though there are no prices
listed.

is the slipperyness with fire cause by the fuel?

all of my fire experience has been with either dube torches with
aluminum tape, or from homemade sticks with innertube to innertube,
or tennis racquet grip. there are quite a few 'close call' stories
associated with that last configuration, i assure you.

The latex I've used hasn't been as grippy as silicone, and it gets
worse as it gets older.

It's caused by the soot. The choice of fuel does affect it. It's
better with cleaner fuels (white gas (coleman) is much better than
kerosene), but the really clean fuel I know (alcohol) doesn't burn
very brightly.
