1) Kampala Taxi Sessions: Angela Kalule's tik tak

Angela Kalule’s “Katikitiki”, also called tik tak, is a daily request this week in Kampala’s Taxis. Katikitiki is a Luganda translation for a “second”. In this song, Kalule tells how she waits on her love interest for that second where she can shower him with her…well, you can fill in the blank.

Towards the Pledging Conference and in order to build momentum, 15th of August has been declared a “One African Voice Call Day” on the humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa and in Somalia in particular. On this mobilization and sensitization day, the AU intends to reiterate its appeal to Member States, the African private sector, the international community, the Diaspora and all well meaning persons of good will, to donate in kind or in cash so as to provide and increase humanitarian assistance to affected populations in the Horn of Africa.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr Jean Ping, appeals to all Member States and other stakeholders to generously contribute to the on-going efforts. In the meantime, preparations are undertaken for the Pledging Conference which will take place on 25th August 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Headquarters of the African Union.
In this respect, former President of Ghana and High Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia, Mr Jerry Rawlings, met with the Chairperson of the Union, Mr. Obiang-Nguema Mbasogo, to consult on the modalities of the Pledging Conference. He is expected to embark on a sensitization and solidarity tour of some capitals across the continent.
The Permanent Representative Council met and expressed appreciation at the decision of the Chairperson of the Assembly of Heads of States and Government for the active role he is playing in Africa’s response to the humanitarian situation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, August 9, 2011 – U.S. College Students for Ethiopia (USCSE), a project of the Ethiopian Global Initiative (EGI), hosted a closing ceremony for its Youth Community Dialogue participants at the Embassy of the United States of America on Saturday, August 6.

The Youth Community Dialogue is a USCSE summer program that helps Addis Ababa high school students communicate effectively and creatively to their peers and community members about issues important to them in their local neighborhoods. Through this Dialogue, USCSE promotes a culture of volunteerism and community engagement among local youth, while developing their analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

For five weeks, 20 participants engaged in stimulating discussions and prepared presentations on issues ranging from “Youth Self-Expression” to “Juvenile Delinquency,” under the guidance of U.S. and Addis Ababa University students. Participants had the opportunity to speak and interact with Diaspora professionals that returned to Ethiopia to contribute to the country’s development.

EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships for Undergraduates

Deadline: December 12, 2011

Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer of their junior year. The fellowship provides up to $19,700 per academic year of support and $9,500 of support for a three-month summer internship.
