Many thanks, yep it sounds like using a 555 timer to make a PWM signal is a better option per battery life. I'll do some searching for an exact circuit that

Calculate the series resister as per normal as if the LED is connected directly to the power supply (which is what will happen when the pot is turned to 0

If the sampling frequency of your sound card is 44.1 kHz than the maximum frequency you can recover from your sampled data is 22.05 kHz, 1/2 of your sampling
