Subject: Special size apparel market segment rapidly growing but has room for improvement

The NPD Group: Plus-Size Shoppers Now Account for One in Five Ladies Apparel
Purchases in Canada Special size apparel market segment rapidly growing but has
room for improvement
   TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 12, 2008) - The $10.8 billion women's
apparel market could far exceed its annual three per cent growth rate if it gave
more attention to catering to all special sizes, says a recent Canadian Special
Sizes report by the NPD Group. Sales of plus, petite plus, and tall sizes far
outpace the overall apparel market, especially the ladies plus-size market which
grew 20 per cent between 2003 and 2007 and now represents one out of every five
purchases of ladies apparel in the total ladies apparel market.

However, the report also highlights dissatisfaction among plus-sized consumers
compared with tall and petite-sized shoppers, who are able to find clothes in
other apparel segments.

"The special sizes market, especially plus size, offers significant growth
opportunity for Canadian retailers that are willing to offer a greater variety
of wardrobe options and current fashions," says Kaileen Millard-Ruff, Director
of Fashion for the NPD Group. "Our report shows that the Ladies Plus segment in
2007 was the fastest growing size segment and is now worth $2.1 billion. That's
growth of $342 million dollars since 2003, despite significant levels of
dissatisfaction with what is available to them. Just imagine if they were
satisfied."

The NPD Group report highlights the commitment of dollars the Plus group rewards
those retailers who have demonstrated a commitment to marketing to this segment
in Canada. For example, the top 10 plus-size ladies-wear retailers make up 57
per cent of the total plus-size clothing market's dollar share. Conversely, the
top 10 retailers of general women's apparel account for only 33 per cent of that
market.

Changing Clothing Needs

According to the report, more than half of those surveyed believe they need a
special size based on their body type. Furthermore, 46 per cent of women who
typically buy regular sizes for themselves said they occasionally purchase
special sizes.

Much of the rising demand is due to the spending power of the aging population
and the lack of a consistent sizing standard in the apparel industry in Canada.

"Canadian Apparel Market Monitor (CAMM) data shows us women 45 and older
represent more than 50 per cent of the dollars spent on ladies apparel," said
Millard-Ruff. "So it should be no surprise that as women age they gradually
drift into different size segments and/or want a more relaxed fit."

Ahead of the curves To address changing demographic, fashionable prom dresses
getting plus-sized makeover
http://www.timesrecordnews.com/news/2008/mar/10/ahead-curves/

CHICAGO — A 51-inch waist plus 58-inch hips used to equal “staying home” for
prom.
Which is why Phyllis Brasch Librach left a journalism career to found Sydney’s
Closet in 2003. Her Web site and suburban St. Louis store carry special-occasion
dresses size 14 to 44 — to give curvy girls, like her own daughter, a
no-more-tears shopping experience for prom.

“These plus-size teens have more choices than ever for everyday wear,” Librach
said, including chain stores such as Torrid and Avenue. “But the last frontier
for fashion-conscious shoppers remains finding plus-size dresses for special
occasions. You can go out and find a black beaded jacket with a skirt and top
that looks like a grandma would wear it. But plus-size teens just want the same
styles that their friends are going to wear.”
By one measure, one in five teens is plus-size. And 62 percent of women, which
includes some high school seniors, wear size 14 or larger. On the red carpet,
stars such as Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrera have shown how to “size up
glamor,” the motto of Sydney’s Closet.
Other prom-dress retailers and designers have done likewise.
Last year, prom shoppers snapped up sizes 20 through 24 from designer DeBora
Rachelle and asked for larger ones. So this year she increased her size chart to
size 32 in some designs.
Some girls last year also told Rachelle that they added fabric to her sheath
dresses because they couldn’t find sheath styles in larger sizes anywhere.
“I actually did not think the gowns that they were choosing to add side panels
to were flattering for their size,” said Rachelle, whose designs are carried at
promdressshop.com. So she designed a couple of sheath plus-size dresses with
organza overlays that flow over the first layer.
This season, prom-dress powerhouse Faviana debuted stretch-fabric dresses in
plus sizes that sold well to retailers across the country, said Omid Moradi,
sales and marketing manager for the family-owned company.
Chain stores such as David’s Bridal carry some prom styles up to size 24.
But the Internet remains the salvation of many plus-size teens.
Sites such as Sydney’s Closet, which has experienced double-digit growth each
year, and apparel site Silhouettes.com, cater specifically to the plus-size
customer, who doesn’t have to request special assistance and share three-way
mirrors with size 2s when she shops online.
“We find plus-size prom dresses over size 28 often sell out fast — and first,”
Librach said.
Bridal parties also have found solutions at her site. Librach can arrange to
have dresses cut not just for the size 26 bridesmaid but also the size 4 one.

ALL CHARACTERS MUST BE STRONG SINGERS & DANCERS
This is a shortened TYA version of the Broadway musical SEUSSICAL.
All MUST be versatile singer/actor/dancers with comedic flair. Also
must be able to carry tight harmonies.

All characters begin as Schoolyard Kids. They are archetypical middle-
schoolers. They become animals through imagination rather than
prosthetics. All characters are 19-25, but read younger.

Cat In The Hat:
Male or Female. Extremely hip. Impish, mischievous, a tongue-in-cheek
quality, a sense of irony, anarchy and mockery. The Cat is a force of
good, of humor, of wit, adventure and magic and anarchy! Must be
great with creating a variety of characters and accents. Extremely
good physical comic.

Horton The Elephant:
Stocky Male. Bari-tenor. Simple, sincere, somewhat out of place in a
hip, cynical world. He's sincere, earnest, heroic and true to
himself.

Gertrude:
Female. Soprano with mix/belt. She is insecure. She feels she isn't
good enough, pretty enough, talented enough. She is shy. She is
awkward. She's in love with Horton. Requires great physical-comic

centered, and charming. A Teen-Pop Princess. Bosses the Bird Girls

Sour Kangaroo:
African-American. Soprano with mix/belt. Very Bossy. A Know-It-All.
Sassy and Lively. She travels everywhere with her stuffed kangaroo.

Wickersham Brothers:
Asian, Latino, African-American, Caucasian, etc. Bari-tenor. They are
middle school tough guys who get pleasure out of teasing and tricks,
but who would never do anything truly bad. They are gleefully
mischievous.

Bird Girls:
Asian, Latino, African-American, Caucasian, etc. Soprano with
mix/belt. Sassy Gal pals who love looking pretty, strutting their
stuff, hanging out with that cool Mayzie.

Mr. And Mrs. Mayor:
Doubling from Wickersham & Bird Girl. Real, decent "Americans" who
have read just a little too much Dr. Spock. They need a facility for
creating a strong character while retaining their humanity. Must have
versatile character abilities.

Jojo:
A small young man who can play a child. Tenor. An urban kid with an
unbridled imagination that enables him to solve problems, find his
way, and ultimately save the world. Honest. A little bit mischievous.
A dreamer.
