to get to the part.

Hi
the frequency pot screw
Can this be turned with a normal screwdriver ?
As with the standard mp, you need to use a plastic or wooden screwdriver
cheers

Mark,

Yes - unscrew the four screws, turn the board over. Insert small screw
driver to engage in the straight blade screw inside the square metal
housing. Follow the zero-beat/calibration technique to put it on
frequency. Best of course is a highly accurate frequency counter but
WWV can be used too.

I would try to put at least one screw back in to hold the board to the
chassis including its ground plane the tune/adjust to calibrate.

The Mark-V version of that radio has that board mounted in that location
but is mounted with all components on top including the cable
connections. Much simpler to deal with.

The main oscillator is located on the right side of the radio. Take off the
top and bottom covers and you will see the board on the upper right. On mine, I
had to remove the board because the pot was on the bottom. Adjust at your own
peril, make sure you have a good reference.

Hi to all, I have just joined this FT-1000MP Group.

I am the proud owner of a very nice Mk V, which I have just discovered
that it has a problem with the inbuilt tuner.

(Before I make the next statement, let me assure the group that I am no
CBer) The radio will tune all frequencies up to 27.504.63 Mhz, but
anything above (and including) 27.504.64 Mhz, it locks itself in the
tuning mode. I can hear a relay operating at the change between these
frequencies.

I very rarely go to the 10 metre band, but decided to put a few calls
out in last weekends ARRL 10 meter contest. Only to discover that my
prized radio has a gremlin lurking within.

I was wondering if this is a common problem with a known solution, or
has anyone else had a similar problem?

I have only had possession of the Mk V for a couple of weeks, so maybe
it is an operator problem?.... Is there something I should/shouldnot be
doing?

Thankyou in advance. Allan VK4JAC.

My Mk 5 Field has distorted audio on SSB and low deviation on FM. On SSB it
sounds like the processor is turned up to maximum, even though it isn't. I've
set up the mike gain and compression as per the manual and all looks OK on the
front panel. I've tried substituting a different mike to no avail. The situation
is the same with the processor off.

When driven with a two tone signal generator it shows high levels of IMD on my
spectrum analyser. I've checked the mike amp Q3048 and the electronic volume IC
Q3044. Both are producing gain but with no signal levels shown in the workshop
manual it's difficult to know what should be there. As far as I can see these
two components are the only active ones common to both the SSB and FM audio path
as from there on the path splits.

If anyone has experienced this before or has any ideas for a fix I'd be
delighted to hear from you.

Hello all,

I was wondering if and what the radio setting would be for running psk31 on
a Mark 5 Field radio. I know that there are some settings
that are changed to run RTTY with the 'pkt' switch, and wondered if the same
was true for psk. I would like to run both modes from this
radio. Radio is currently set up with the audio rx/tx on the pkt din plug on
the back of the radio. PTT is controlled via the 'cat' cable
and is software controlled, using Logger 32 and DM780 software. Also is it
better to have the audio going to the RTTY din plug for RTTY,
and the audio also going to the PKT din plug for psk?

That assumes you have an easy way of moving the mic from a real mic to your
computer (i.e. a rigblaster). Otherwise you need to manually remove the mic
connector and plug your computer into it. Also, the mic connector on the
1000 does not provide audio so you've got yet another cable to get the sound
back to the computer.

If you use the one of the plugs in the back, you don't "really" need an
interface (although something with isolation is a good idea) and you have
one less cable running back to the computer. Plus, IMHO, it is more seamless
- switch to packet and it just makes sense that the radio is being driven
from the PKT port.

Of course, in my shack, the real reason to hardwire all this and make it
idiot proof is so I don't put the radio in USB, start typing on the computer
and then wonder why the stupid thing doesn't seem to be working -- all the
while my microphone is happily transmitting every sound in my shack out onto
the PSK frequency. And I know eventually that would happen :-)

I'm confused by all this talk of PKT plug, RTTY plug and menu settings.
Both PSK31 and RTTY will run just fine with the sound card output delivered
to the mic connector and the radio set for SSB. No menu changes necessary.
PSK31 runs USB and RTTY runs LSB. Anything further is just
over-complication. Keep it simple.

I am going from memory here and I am sure someone with a bit more knowledge
of the rig can pass on more thorough information. I use a US Interface
Navigator for digital modes. This includes a DIN for the RTTY connection. I
then use the USER (LSB) for PSK31. I don't have the papers in front of me
for the settings I changed in the menu. I believe VA3CR.net had some good
information, but I am not sure that is where I got my PSK31 settings from.
Not sure this helps, but thought I would pass it on. I am also using an MP
not a Mark V, so that might be a bit different.

I hope that makes sense

I am aware of that.

The original question was about running PSK31 and then also running RTTY.
They can both be run from a sound card output to the mic connector. Why
make it more difficult than it needs to be?

Hal - a little more detail if you need it.

The DB9 connector on the cable needs to be a female on both ends. Pins
2 and 3 must be connected to pins 2 and 3 on the other end, not rolled.

Also the radio is hard coded for 4800 baud and N, 8, 2. Be sure to set
whatever software you elect to use to those settings.

Also - if you get frustrated with that dumb Yaesu flashing "CAT" display
- maddening, find in your software program where you can set the radio
polling interval. Set it to 100ms at which point the polling is fast
enough the radio doesn't have time to turn the CAT off before it has to
turn it on again. (The CAT flashes every time time serial interface
card polls the radio for information.)

Hal - nothing special about the cable.

As you read in the manual be sure you get a straight through serial
cable, not at NULL modem cable. Make sure it has the right gender plug
on each end!

It does not matter what program you are using - a serial RS-232
connection is what it is.
