The FT897 Group averages around 320 (+/-100 one-sigma) messages
per month. Because the volume of messages is rather large, I would
like to remind everyone of a few long-standing FT897 guidelines to
follow. Most of you do so already.

1. Civility. (This is practiced well by our members!)

2. Please sign your messages with name and call sign, e.g.,
     Fred - W1XYZ.

3. When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all
unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the text
from the prior message to which you are replying ... <snip> the
rest. If one desires to read the entire thread, the command [Up
Thread] at the top of the message can be used to read the entire
discussion. Remember also that a lot of members have slow
connections and some even pay connect time or characters rx/tx. This
also helps the clarity of your message.

4. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should be
to the entire group of over 2,000 or directly to the author of the
post. When you click on "Reply," it goes to everyone. To reply
direct (simplex), you should click on the email address following the
user ID line at the top of the post. Notice that only a part is
shown for privacy. Also, please think about if what you are about to
post in reply to the group really should be to the group ... replies
like "I sure do agree with that" doesn't add much to the group. Send
thoughts like those direct to the poster please.

5. It is fine for members to post something for sale or wanted to
buy ... once per item(s). All questions and offers to buy/sell
should be made directly to the poster, not to the Group. The member
posting the FS or WTB may post that the item(s) was/were
sold/purchased.

6. Posting of commercial items for sale by manufacturers or dealers
is also fine, but should be done on an infrequent basis. The FT897
members benefit by learning of hardware, software, sales, etc. before
it appears in magazines, etc.

7. New members are all moderated until their first posting. If it
follows the guidelines, it is approved and the member is change to
unmoderated status. This list is a partially moderated list, i.e.,
only first message is moderated while later messages are monitored
after posting. If an unmoderated posting is found by the moderators
to have a problem, then the poster is contacted directly to resolve.
Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it has been working.

Here is a link to my pictures.

I added the Pelican case to a backpack designed to carry these cases.

The backpack is from Gexar and you can reach them at http://www.gexar.com and it
is $199
The pack will carry most any size pelican case or similar type case.
It makes carrying the whole setup a piece of cake.

Also when you want to unpack, you just lay it on the ground. It does not affect
the opening of the case.

You can see the tube from Budd that used to old the buddipole. Now it holds my
tripod which is a 10' high tripod that is designed to hold photographic
lighting.

The pack has a storage compartment just under that but since I had nothing in
it, it is all scrunched under the tube. It also has two large waist bags that
slide over the waist strap. These can hold anything you want to access quickly.
Ie food, water and the GPS.

I also added a 50/146/446 antenna to the buddipole layer. This antenna is a
Diamond SG-M911 and is designed to be a mobile antenna, but it has a PL-259
connector on it so on the back of the radio you just need to add a right angle
connector to the VHF/UHF jack and screw this on and you are ready to go. No need
to carry an HT for that local repeater work.

It would be great to hear some real world experiences of running the
FT-897 on battery power, either with the FNB-78(s) or other batteries.

What was it like? Did you operate pedestrian mobile or just picnic
table style? How long did you operate per amp hour? Was the weight an
issue? How did reduced power affect your operation?

What else can you share?

Thanks in advance for all posts.

I selected the DM-330MV and I would buy it again in a heartbeat. It
is great.

But, all of these switching supplies have some noise. This power
supply has some too. However, it is not loud when installed properly
with a ground and should you ever find yourself operating on a
frequency where there is a power supply birdie, you can move the
birdie out of the way by using the noise offset control on the front
panel. If you operate extensively on 160 meters, you might have to
do this. I operate on 80 meters and up and never need to worry about
power supply noise. I have this supply sitting right on top of my FT-
897 (have batteries inside the radio) and it is a great combination
if you want an external supply.

Also, I love having the multitude of connectors and the convenience
outlet.

I bought the FT 897 for use when camping so I have been using the
radio set at 20 watts since January 04 even though I have an
external power supply and can increase the output power to 100
watts. This has been an interesting experiment for me as I have
always operated with high power. I found that it is not the power
that makes the QSO. It is the antenna. At first, with a poor
antenna, I was frustrated. Then, I put some effort into a high and
clean installation for my G5RV. Bingo! Now I am really talking. The
antenna makes more of a difference than the power setting. 20 watts
is just fine. I leave it that way all the time. SO, WHEN I GO
CAMPING, IT WILL BE THE SAME FOR ME.

I have SSB QSOs all over and on digital modes it works well too.

I have a FP-30 that I have not had a noise problem with, but it was
a display model, Serial number: 21002 which sounds pretty old. I am
curious if the others that have posted with or without FP-30 noise
problems can indicate their serial numbers? That might be helpful
to others.

Matt....

I have several radios Ic-706 FT-847 the FT-897 and a IC-718, they
all have there strong point and weak points example...

IC-706 use this in my work truck durable strong small radio easy
to use but will bleed over if used near other hf radios.
IC-718 no VHF or UHF but simple radio for newbies and great
        preformer
FT-847 great for SAT work but seems to be a delicate radio
has four antenna inputs great for all the diff bands
and Sat antennas...until you have a storm and have to
        disconnect four antennas.
FT-897 use it in my personal truck on outings with the Boy Scouts
special events it seems to be the best all round radio.
grab it out of the truck put 2 90's on the antenna connectors
attach a commet 2+440 antenna and a military PRC fold up
antenna on the other and you are on the air!!
Antennas.... you with a good tuner can talk to the world with your
house gutter or a bed spring! When you start on HF you will be
excited with the next state or Canada or South America all which can
be done with a ham stick. your antenna's will grow with your
knowledge of Ham radio. the more you learn the bigger your antenna
will be :)

If you can afford it a good starting point would be a ATAS or a
screwdriver with a controller designed for the radio. better to
learn how to work the radio first then add antennas and tuners after
you are a good operator. with either of those antennas you can move
it from home to car, their are comprimises no 160 or 80 on the ATAS
more wire with the screw driver ect.

Most of all
HAVE FUN!!!!

good luck

W4RT makes a after market battery for it. But...I would have to say
I am unhappy with mine , have an orignal and a W4RT. The W4RT does
not fit right had to shim it to make it fit.

if you do a search on the Yaesu battery you will find it on sale
some where for $109.00, I bought the aftermarket because I was
placing an order and it was what they had, my bad luck.

just my 2 cents

I wanted mine with the internal batteries for portable use, so no
internal power supply. At home and for portable use with mains
available, I made a power supply comprising a 17 AH gell pack battery
with a 5 amp current limited power supply connected as a float
charger set to 13.9 volts. When mains is available the psu supplies
the first 5 amps and keeps the battery charged, whilst on transmit
the battery supplies the peaks. It also has the advantage of
being "trans-portable" !

Regardsing aerials, I have recently been using a diople fed with 300
ohm ribbon cable via an MFJ971 ATU. Each leg is 13.6m long making it
resonant on 60m, but with the ATU it seems to load up on 80 through
10m. This just fits my garden and seems to perform as well as a
Butternut verticle most of the time. Oh and it only cost a couple of
pounds to make !

Martin,

To determine whether an FP-30 power supply puts out hash, disconnect the
antenna, up the volume, and tune across all bands from 160 to 10. It
will appear at various spot frequencies all across the spectrum. Yaesu
has a fix for it but requires updates to both the FT-897 and FP-30.
It's worth the shipping and down-time.

Greetings all,

I know this is not an FT-897 directly related issue, but who knows,
may be it will, has any body experienced the Maldol HVU-8 antenna?

It sounds to be the ideal antenna and made specially for the FT-897
covering HF-VHF and UHF, portable and land base, and it is two and a
half kilos or 5.5Ib. thanks to all who responded to my inquiry
regarding the FP&FC-30 and specially to you Lynn, much obliged.

Not an effective antenna. You can do much better for $350 with a wire or whip
and a auto tuner. V/U are easy antennas to make and carry.

Take a look at the Buddipole! http://www.buddipole.com
Light weight portable that covers 2 thru 40 meters.

HI Sommer

Are you thinking of using the antenna Mobile, Portable, or as a
(semi)permanent base? The buddy pole as mentioned above is
excellent but pricey as well. You could get two Hamsticks and a
Dipole adapter and have a mobile/portable setup similar to the
buddipole for a lot less.

Answer for Dutch readers,

hoi Willem,

Groeten

Try this:

Yaesu Nederland
E-mail Address(es):
   yaesu@...

What I heard is that Yeasu vertex and Yeasu Netherlands not having the same
policy about after sales service.
Upgrade here in the Netherlands is not possible I heared too.
Somthing with the law in other countries?
The market in the Netherlands is small compared with other countries
(continents).
A disadvantage of Yeasu Netherlands.

Hello All,

Please be aware that there is no 'Yaesu Netherlands'. there is
only 'Yaesu Europe', based in the Netherlands.

Therefore, the statement that the dutch market is not big and
therefore not interesting to Yaesu, is untrue: all transmitters that
have faults and need repair and are sold somewhere in Europe
(Germany for example), are sent to the Netherlands.

Is it possible to use the internal power supply as a stand alone
power supply while the batteries are installed in the FT-897. I'm
trying to find a means to operate both as a portable and base unit
without having to keep unscrewing those tiny screws every time.

Widebander is a small program used to do what you want. Check the files
section of this group, it should be there.
