Polish Posters in California

Check out at the website below to find
information about an exciting program
showcasing Polish posters in various places
throughout Los Angeles. These exhibits are
organized by two different offices of the
Polish government, in cooperation with
Contemporary Posters and eight different
venues in California. Quite an undertaking!
But let's not just watch in awe. Let's
think how we, too, could promote Polish
culture in cooperation with the Polish
government's Polish Cultural Institute. Do
you agree it's a good idea?... -- MZ

Dear Friend,

On June 23rd, I will be participating in the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation's Ride to Cure Diabetes,
a 106 mile bike ride through Sonoma Valley, Santa
Rosa, CA. The goal of the Ride is to raise money to
help JDRF find a cure for diabetes.

It's a tough ride, but I will make it, because I don't
want to let Jessica down. Jessica is 7 1/2 years old
with diabetes, and I'm riding in honor of her and her
incredible sprit.

Despite her illness, Jessica loves to read, ride her
bike, play the piano and spend time with her family.
But it has not been easy for her. Since she was
diagnosed at age two and a half, Jessica has had 10 to
15 finger sticks and five daily injections to
survivethis complicated disease. Jessica has a little
girl's heart - full of hope - just wanting for the day
her cure is found. She is so sure that she will be
cured before she's all grown up.

If Jessica can put up with all that, I figure the
least I can do is finish this Ride and help JDRF raise
money to fight the disease that afflicts her. JDRF is
a proven fighter against diabetes in all its forms.
Since 1970 it has given $900 million to diabetes
research - more than any other nongovernmental health
agency in the world. Its contributions have funded
medical breakthrough that have improved the lives of
people with diabetes everywhere. And its ultimate goal
is a cure for diabetes.

You may not know it, but diabetes will kill more
Americans this year than AIDS, cancer or emphysema. It
will leave thousands of others blind, on dialysis, or
in wheelchairs. And it will rob some of the joy of
childhood for many, many very young people who are
afflicted with this terrible disease.

My personal goal for his event is to raise $4,000.00.
I would greatly appreciate whatever support you can
give in meeting this goal.

Please help as I pedal closer to a cure by sending a
tax deductible donation to my address below (make
check payable to JDRF). Online donations may also be
made by logging onto http://www.ride.jdrf.org/donate
and typing my name in provided spaces. It is just that
easy to help.

I am confident that diabetes can be cured within our
lifetime. Together we can make it happen.

Sincerely,

Sylwia DuChez

Dear Friends,

Saved by Deportation: An Unknown Odyssey of
Polish Jews, is finally out and I am proud to
announce that its New York Premiere will take
place at the The Makor/Steinhardt Center on
March 14 and 15, 2007 at 6 PM and 8 PM. Both
Robert and myself will be there for a Q&A
session following the screening.

It took Robert Podgursky, a co-producer of
this film, and myself, more then seven years
to complete this film, and we consider it 'a
labor of love'. This feature documentary (80
min.) has already won the Audience Award for
the Best Documentary at The Washington Jewish
Film Festival in Washington D.C. in December
of 2006.

In 1940, a year before the Nazis started
deporting Jews to death camps, Joseph Stalin
ordered the deportation of approximately
200,000 Polish Jews from Russian-occupied
Eastern Poland to forced labor settlements in
the Soviet interior. As cruel as Stalin's
deportations were, ultimately they largely
saved Jewish lives, for the deportees
constituted the overwhelming majority of
Polish Jews who escaped the Nazi Holocaust.
Saved by Deportation not only tells this
story, but it re-traces the path Asher and
Shyfra Scharf traveled more than 60 years ago
from Poland to Siberia to the former Soviet
states of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in
Central Asia. This little-known story of
survival is both a harrowing adventure and an
affirmation of human goodness during times of
great darkness.

CORRECTION:
In the subject line of the PGV issue
released earlier today, I made a
mistake in reporting the date of the
National Polish Center's gala dinner.
This event is scheduled for MAY 5,
not May 8. The announcement in the
body of the message was correct, as
copied below. My apologies for the
confusion. Thanks to Len Baldyga
for catching the discrepancy. By the
way, you can find more information
about the Center at http://polishcenterdc.org

Casimir Pulaski Day on ThingsPolish.com

March 4 is the birthday of Kazimierz Pulaski,
who is known in America as Casimir or Casmir
Pulaski. I'd like to thank Max Bondyra from
Baltimore for reminding us about the Casimir
Pulaski Day, which is celebrated in some
areas of the United States, though on
different dates.

Things Polish honors Pulaski in its own way.
As you may expect, today I created a special
Kazimierz Pulaski section at my online store
at

http://thingspolish.com

When you visit the site, click on History on
the left menu and then on Pulaski. There
you will find as many as nine books on this
Polish hero of the American Revolution, plus
some "I love Pulaski" shirts!

(In the History section, you will also see
a sub-section on Ignacy Jan Paderewski,
another new addition to thingspolish.com.)

"From Solidarity to Martial Law: The Polish
Crisis of 1980-1981: A Documentary History"
-- a new book edited by Andrzej Paczkowski
and Malcolm Byrne

* * *

The publication of this book was annnounced
on the 25th anniversary of the imposition of
martial law in Poland, but the book is only
now making its way into distribution channels
in the United States. You can pre-order this
book at http://thingspolish.com today.

The book description below was copied from
the website of the National Security
Archives with permission by the book's co-
editor Malcolm Byrne.

It sounds like a very important resource for
anyone interested in Polish recent history.

New Book Publishes Key Documents on the
Solidarity Period, 1980-1981

U.S. Misread Polish Leadership, and Was
Unprepared for the Crackdown despite Having a
Spy on the Inside

On December 13, 1981, Polish Prime Minister
Wojciech Jaruzelski appeared on national TV
to declare that a state of martial law
existed in the country. Earlier in the night,
military and police forces had begun securing
strategic facilities while ZOMO special
police rounded up thousands of members of the
Solidarity trade union, including its
celebrated leader, Lech Walesa.

A quarter-century later, the George
Washington University-based National
Security Archive is publishing, through
Central European University Press, a
collection of previously secret documentation
entitled From Solidarity to Martial Law,
edited by Andrzej Paczkowski and Malcolm
Byrne (Walesa provided the volume's
foreword). The documents, many of which have
never been published in English, are from
inside Solidarity, the Polish communist party
leadership, the Kremlin as well as the White
House and CIA. They provide a vivid history
of the Solidarity period, one of the most
dramatic episodes in the Cold War.

While martial law was highly effective in
suppressing the union and restoring communist
party control in Poland, the authorities
could not eradicate the political movement
that had been awakened, and that Solidarity
both led and symbolized. In 1983, Walesa
would win the Nobel Peace Prize and before
the end of the decade, Poles would elect
Eastern Europe's first non-communist
government since World War II.

Although a crackdown of some kind against the
union had long been feared and anticipated
(ever since Solidarity's founding in August
1980), when it came it nonetheless took most
observers outside of Poland by surprise. For
over a year, Jaruzelski's patrons in the
Kremlin had been applying extraordinary
political pressure on Warsaw to crush the
opposition, but Jaruzelski did not inform
them that he was finally ready to act until
approximately two days before.

In the United States, observers and policy-
makers were also caught off-guard despite
having had a highly-placed spy in the Polish
Defense Ministry until just weeks before the
crackdown. Part of the explanation was that
senior officials focused on the possibility
of a Soviet invasion, not an internal
"solution." An invasion, especially after the
Red Army's move into Afghanistan two years
earlier, would have created a major
international crisis.

But U.S. officials also misread the Polish
leadership, including Jaruzelski, documents
show. In evaluating the possibility of an
outside invasion earlier in 1981, State
Department and CIA analyses concluded that
even the Polish communist party would resist
a Soviet move, along with the rest of the
population, and would use martial law as a
way to "maximize deterrence" against Moscow.
In fact, internal Polish and Soviet records
make clear that Jaruzelski and his colleagues
were intent on imposing military rule for
purposes of reasserting control over society,
a goal they fully shared with the Kremlin.

The documents include:

* Internal Solidarity union records of
leadership meetings and strategy sessions

* Transcripts of Polish Politburo and
Secretariat meetings

* Transcripts of Soviet leadership
discussions

* Detailed accounts of one-on-one meetings
and telephone conversations between Leonid
Brezhnev and Polish leaders Stanislaw Kania
and Jaruzelski

* White House discussions of the unfolding
crisis and a possible Soviet invasion

* CIA analyses

* Communications from CIA agent Col. Ryszard
Kuklinski who fed the U.S. highly classified
information on Poland's plans for martial law

* Materials from the Catholic Church
including Pope John Paul II

* A page from the notebook of key Soviet
adjutant Gen. Viktor Anoshkin showing that
Jaruzelski pleaded with Moscow to be prepared
to send in troops just before martial law --
shedding rare light on the unresolved
historical and political question of
Jaruzelski's motives regarding a possible
Soviet intervention

The new book contains 95 documents in
translation, representing sources from the
archives of eight countries, and thus
providing a multi-dimensional, multi-
national perspective on the key aspects of
the Solidarity crisis. The documents are
accompanied by descriptive "headnotes"
explaining the significance of each item,
along with a lengthy chronology of events
and other research aids. A major overview by
the editors describes and locates the events
in their historical context.

Praise for From Solidarity to Martial Law

"I consider From Solidarity to Martial Law a
highly successful effort at depicting the
events of 25 years ago. These documents ...
enable us to perceive the path we have
traversed since that time when, prior to
Gorbachev and prior to Reagan, we created the
first fissure in the system of communist
captivity." -- Lech Walesa, former Solidarity
leader and President of Poland

"An important and very revealing contribution
to a better understanding of a particularly
critical phase in the Cold War. The documents
[in this book] provide a sense of intimacy to
the complex interactions between American and
Soviet decision makers as well as an insight
into the internal Communist debates." --
Zbigniew Brzezinski, former U.S. National
Security Advisor

From Al Koproski...

Dear Marcin,

I received a call from Michael Szporer a
couple of days ago, informing me that
General Rowny will be celebrating his 90th
birthday next month. I suggested that we
celebrate this auspicious event with a big
birthday cake at the National Polish
Center's Awards Dinner on May 5th and the
General agreed.

The cost of the dinner is $175.00 person
and anyone who would like to attend is
welcome. For dinner reservations contact
Dr. Monika Krol at (202) 785-2320 or
director@... . The other
people we will be honoring are Chester
Grabowski, Editor Emeritus of the Post
Eagle, Alex Storozynski, Pulitzer Prize
winner, Edward Pinkowski, author and
historian and Jerry Zremski, President of
the National Press Club.

I would appreciate your emailing anyone you
think would like to honor the General and
these fine men.

Thanks,

Al Koproski

I am attaching a ticket reservation form and
Adv. contract, in case anyone is interested.

From Minerva Sanchez...

Greetings Marcin,

My name is Minerva. I came across your email
address as I was searching for Polish
related activities in the DC area. I have no
Polish family background. I spent a year in
Poland on a Fulbright to Krakow and I
believe I left part of my heart there. I
truly loved it there.

Well, I was writing to you to say that
persons interested in brushing up their
basic Polish conversation skills can do so
for free at George Washington University.
This is through the Global Language Group,
also known as Global Languages. It is a
non-profit, official student organization of
The George Washington University (GW). It was
founded by Andrew Brown in September 2005, in
effort to develop cooperation within the
community through the education of
international languages and cultures. The
website for additional info is:

http://www.globallanguagegroup.com/

The Polish classes are offered once a week
for free on Saturday afternoon. For those
wanting a more intensive class, they are
then required to pay.

I thought you might want to add the info to
the Polish Washington directory.

POLISH SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN IN
BALTIMORE

This summer, Polish National Alliance
Council 21 in Baltimore will host another
children's program.

The program is designed for children from
4.5 to 6.5 years old. The children will
meet every weekday from June 18 until June
29, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Your children can learn the Polish language
and make new friends while preparing for a
children's theater production. Last year,
the Children's Teater presented "Szewczyk
Dratewka" (Twiney the Shoemaker), based on
a popular children's story by Janina
Porazinska.

For more information, please contact the
Polish teacher, Beata Moskala-Gallaherat, at
info@... or (410) 732-1100,
mailbox 6.

You can read Beata's description of last
year's summer program on the website of PNA
Council 21 at http://BaltimorePNA.org (click
on Programs > Summer Program).

A few books by Janina Porazinska, in English
translation, are available at
http://thingspolish.com (look in the
Children's Section or in Books by Author >
Porazinska, Janina). Particularly intriguing
is a used copy of In Voytus' Little House,
published by Roy Publishers in 1944 (!!!) and
available on Things Polish for only $9.95
plus shipping.

JAN "PTASZYN" WROBLEWSKI – a leader of the
Polish jazz scene, originator of numerous
unconventional projects, and animator and
promoter of jazz in Poland for half a
century – can surely be regarded as the
godfather of Polish jazz. Born in 1936, he
is from the generation that, in the
Stalinist era, discovered jazz on
clandestine radios when it was considered
degenerate, immoral, and subversive. Now,
well into his sixth decade of performing,
he is internationally acclaimed as a
maestro of the tenor and baritone
saxophone and more − a bandleader, composer,
arranger, jazz journalist, and conductor of
jazz bands on many radio and TV programs.
"Ptaszyn" has mentored, launched, promoted,
or played with virtually every well-known
jazz musician in Poland.

Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski's performance this
Sunday in Washington, D.C., has been
moved from the outdoor Sylvan Theater (next
to the Washington Monument) to Blues
Alley (the jazz club in Georgetown).  The time
of  Ptaszyn's performance also has been
moved from 4 p.m. to around 10 p.m.

Admission is free, but you MUST call to reserve
your seats.  Call (202) 337-4141.  It looks like
there will be two shows, one (with other
international musicians) starting at 8 p.m. and
the second (with Ptaszyn) starting at 10 p.m.
The situation appears to be in flux, so
the best thing to do is call the number given.
The normal minimum spending requirements do
not apply to this event at the Blues Alley.  For

PTASZYN'S BIO

JAN "PTASZYN" WROBLEWSKI -- a leader of
the Polish jazz scene, originator of numerous
unconventional projects, and animator and
promoter of jazz in Poland for half a century --
can surely be regarded as the godfather of
Polish jazz. Born in 1936, he is from the
generation that, in the Stalinist era, discovered
jazz on clandestine radios when it was
considered degenerate, immoral, and
subversive. Now, well into his sixth decade of
performing, he is internationally acclaimed as
a maestro of the tenor and baritone saxophone
and more ... a bandleader, composer, arranger,
jazz journalist, and conductor of jazz bands on
many radio and TV programs. "Ptaszyn" has
mentored, launched, promoted, or played with
virtually every well-known jazz musician in Poland.

#992 From: Roman Korzan - Federation of Polish Americans <fpanet@...>
Date: Thu May 3, 2007 8:00 am
Subject: Russian Rhetoric Suggests It Will Challenge Ally Poland’s Status in NATO
fpanet
Send Email Send Email

The following is a May 2-nd, 2007 press release from The Federation of
Polish Americans, Inc. (FPA).
National Directors of FPA in 1996 testified before the United States
House of Representatives International Relations Committee on behalf of
Poland’s inclusion in NATO Enlargement.
FPA and FPA Political Action Committee have been active politically
since 1996.

===========
Washington, D.C. - May 2-nd, 2007
FEDERATION OF POLISH AMERICANS, Inc. - For Immediate Release

** RUSSIAN RHETORIC SUGGESTS IT WILL CHALLENGE ALLY POLAND’S STATUS IN NATO
** Continuation of the Present Course Will Only Bring a Stronger
Response from Americans of Polish Descent

* POLISH AMERICANS WILL RESPOND TO RUSSIAN CHALLENGE

Although we are approaching a decade after the fact of Poland’s
admission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization alliance,
declarations by very senior Russian officials suggest the former Soviet
Union will not ultimately accept Poland’s status as a full member.
Recent ambiguous statements by senior Russian military officers, capped
this week by Vladimir Putin’s proposal to withdraw from a security
treaty with NATO, are a cause for consternation in the Polish American
community.
Continuation of the present dialogue initiated by Russia and the course
it suggests will only bring a stronger, categorical response on the part
of Americans of Polish descent and their friends.

* PUTIN REFERS TO PRE-ENLARGEMENT STATUS OF POLISH TERRITORY

Most disturbing is the claim by Russia that operational NATO bases
anywhere in Poland are a violation of an understanding it had with NATO
when the alliance expanded in 1998. This recalls a pre-enlargement
agreement of 1990—the so-called Two-Plus-Four protocol associated with
German reunification—whereby the Russians were told that eastward
deployment of NATO military capability would not occur when the
territory of East Germany became one with NATO member West Germany. It
was precisely this point the Federation of Polish Americans raised in
the June 1996 Congressional testimony in support of Poland’s case for
admission. Specifically, we argued the then-popular Partnership for
Peace alternative to full alliance membership for Poland was in fact
linked to Two-Plus-Four (with the no deployment proviso) and therefore
could not provide meaningful security guarantees.

The United States Senate, in its vote to ratify Poland’s membership and
extend Article V guarantees to Poland implicitly rejected at least this
aspect of the Two-Plus-Four protocol. However, it is precisely this
security provision, now raised by the planned Polish missile sites,
which Russian President Putin is repudiating.

* U.S. RESOLVE CAN BE VALIDATED BY ACTION

The focused and frank attention the Bush administration has now publicly
revealed is deeply encouraging as we enter this uncertain situation.
This commendable position is, in our view, nothing less than a
reaffirmation of the Senate vote on Poland’s membership.
An unambiguous resolve clearly defining Poland’s security status now
needs to be validated by action.

* We urge:

- Increase Military Assistance to Modernize Poland Armed Forces,

- Establish a Permanent U.S. Military Presence In Poland,

- Provide for a Comprehensive Air and Missile Defense of Poland as
Relates to the Proposed Deployment That is Truly Consistent with Article
V Provisions of the NATO Treaty.

My name is David Fields. One day I was minding my own business, cleaning my
small airplane at Warrenton, Va, when my friend introduced me to Magdalena.
She was here on a work visa. We started dating last summer until she had to go
back to Wladawa, Poland last October. In February of this year, I flew to
Warsaw and visited her and her family. We spent time in Wladawa, but also
travelled to Zakopane, Krakow, Oswiecim, Katowice and other places. Poland was
wonderful.

We are working on a fiance visa and I hope she and her daughter will be here
soon.

I joined this group because I know very little about visas and I thought it
would be fun to meet other Polish people.

Thank you for this forum. I'm sure I will learn much.

Marcin,

Thanks for the link. No, I don't know any Polish people in Warrenton. I
actually live in Vienna, and don't know any Polish people here, either. Do you
have any idea if it's legal for Magdalena to drive my car here with just a
Polish dirver's license? Does she have to get a Virginia license first?

David,

Magda needs to come here with an international
driver's license that she can get in Poland.
Otherwise, she'll have to get a Virginia license, but
for that you'll have to produce a proof of residency
for her, such as a phone bill or utility bill at your
address.

I work in McLean/Vienna border area (Tyson's Corner).
A couple Polish colleagues of mine and I are planning
a small social get-together at the Starbucks in Vienna
on Rt. 7 (next to Panera Bread, near intersection with
Rt. 123) on the first Thursday of June at 5:30 p.m.
You, and everyone else, are invited to join us.

Regards,
Marcin

Hello everyone. My name is Barry Oliphant and I have just retired from
the U.S. Navy after 20 wonderful years. I now reside in the Bailey's
Crossroads area. My last 2 1/2 years in the Navy have been spent In
Greece on the island of Crete. While serving there, I ran into the
woman of my dreams, Anna. I have been with her for almost 2 years now
and tried my hardest to look for employment there. I know... the Polish
are finding ways of making money by working outside of Poland, and I'm
trying to make a living there... Either way, We met in a town called
Chania on Crete. I've been to Stasi Las (outside of Warsaw, where she
is from) twice and have spent a 2 month vacation together in Ireland.
She was also living with me for several months before going back home
to her family. Anyhow, she is preparing to stay with me for some time
here within the beltway, and I am jumping through hoops getting her
Visa prepared. I wanted to mix in with with this Polish American
community so when she does get here, she will feel a little more
comfortable when I introduce her to the group. Any advise in making
this a painless effort in obtaining her Visa would be very much
appreciated. By the way, is a tourist VISA good for 3 or six months?
Thank you all!
