It actually is one of a bunch of new HOV exits on I-405.
Google doesn't have it or any of the others.
Still though, I rode my bike across it and have it tracked that way.

My 8/15/08 online questions to Garmin were answered 9/3/08 as follows by
"Chet F., Marine/TR-1 Autopilot", after I had abandoned 3 calls to the
Garmin helpline, plus 2 attempts to leave a voicemail msg. for Garmin's
current VP Operations. No comment was made on the elapsed time - 13
working days / 19 total days. I also visited Garmin's only USA store,
where nobody who could handle marine-related questions could be found on
2 successive days. I had previously emailed my questions to the store
and advised the time and date on which I would come by to speak to a
store specialist.

"I hope this answers some of your questions about Mapsource-Bluechart
and how it works with you PC and GPS.

Q1: Will ALL of the sea area within the red line at the above link be
viewable and accessible by me for course planning and plotting, when I
use the single free unlocking code provided with the US003 CD?
Yes, all of the area within the red line will be viewable and accessible
when using the single region unlock code.

Q2: Will ALL of the charts listed as the basis for the CD be viewable
by me, at their various scales, BOTH when using the MapSource viewer on
my PC, AND when they are later selectively uploaded to the micro SD
memory card in my GPSmap 76CSx handheld?
NOTE: this Q may be irrelevant, if the region displays seamlessly as if
it is one file, any part of which is fully zoomable from the largest to
the smallest available scales.
You will have access to all of the charts within the red line of the
003R region. They will be viewable at various scales on both Mapsource
and your GPS unit. Each chart will be selected individually from one
another.

Q3: Will all chart changes advised in official Notice to Mariner
bulletins have been included as amendments on the US003 CD, up to a
recent date?
The Notice to Mariner bulletins are updated when the chart are composed
for production. You can view this list of corrections for each
individual chart from the link you attached:
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/bluechart/card.jsp?sku=AM-US003-13&cd\
=Americas

The correction dates are directly related the Notice to Mariner updates.

Q4: Are the dates of Notice to Mariner chart updates always viewable?
Yes, the dates of Notice to Mariner chart updates are viewable by using
the selection tool, right clicking, select map feature-chart USXXXXX,
then feature properties.

Q5: Does the MapSource software make it possible for me to write later
Notice to Mariner chart changes to the chart(s) in US003?
No, it does not.

Q6: If any of the answers to Q3, Q4, or Q5 are negative, is there a
subscription service by which Garmin can update my charts?
We have a map update program that allows you to update your charts to
the newest version for $75, at your discretion.

Q7: Is ALL of the information, on ALL of the charts listed as the
platform for US003, viewable BOTH on my PC (by using the MapSource
viewer) AND on my GPSmap 76CSx handheld?
Yes.

Q8: Can I selectively upload from the MapSource viewer to the microSD
memory card in the handheld, for example by omitting some layers, or by
deciding that I don't want to see the southernmost part of the
chart(s?
Yes, you can selectively upload which chart(s) you want to load and not
load to your GPS.
Thank you for contacting GARMIN International."

I've seen it route on unnamed roads. If you're interested in getting the
roads labeled and accurate, though, you should report it to Garmin:

San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, North Los Angeles county have all
been heavily built up itn the last decade. Expect many roads to be
missing. Though the major roads have been on the county plans for a
decade or more.

Suprizingly, I found one road/route in Los Angeles Metropolis that was
paved over by a freeway 25 years ago that is still on the nav system as
a through route. (it is a road from Grand along the north side of the
57/60 freeway that ends where the 60/57 freeway split south and
west.....the road is no longer maintained and is no longer through.

But the nav system takes me off the freeway at grand and puts me on this
non road.

Boy! I guess I don't know how to explain this. On my 76CSx with just
the base map on and you can try this. I-80 through Nebraska with the
zoom set at 5Mi, you can scroll and the rest area icons will show up.
OK, now, using the City Navigator North America 2009 Mapsource Update
DVD I loaded the Nebraska regions onto my microsd card. Now you do
this, and do the same thing scroll across I-80 in Nebraska and the
rest area icons no longer show up. Yes, I can press find and exits and
then locate the rest areas, but they just automatically show up on the
base map without pushing find. Try and you will see. If I have not
loaded the maps correctly please let me know.

Easily explained with two screen captures (now that actual detail has
been provided).

Area of I-80 with *only* basemap showing.
(Rest areas show)

Same area of I-80 with CN NA NT 2009 showing.

Bobcat, the Mac desktop, is now "Road Trip" {gag..}...

See <http://www8.garmin.com/macosx/>

It's a way different feel from the PeeCee version. I still have FIND
problems. There's no "nroute" equivalent. But you can build waypoints
and routes and load maps, so it's way more than was there before.

I hope they'll improve it over the coming months...

Here's the thing...

The basemap has very little on it, so it can afford to show it's
contents when zoomed out (ie 5mi.).

City Navigator has 6-8 million points of interest on it's maps. If it
showed all of them at the 5 mi. zoom level, the map would be so
cluttered that you wouldn't be able to discern anything.

Yes, it makes it tougher to spot rest areas ahead of time as you
travel, but there's really no way around that other than by using only
the basemap.

1. There does not seem to be a special part number for the Americas CD
that contains the Northeast Coast US003R charts AM-US003-13 of
particular interest to me. So, when I buy the CD do I automatically
get free Notice to Mariner updates as of July '08, when I register and
then unlock US003R? – I can't see how I can ensure that I won't be
sold an out-of-date CD, whether I buy directly from Garmin or any
other source.

2. When the GPSmap 76CSx is displaying a land map (as opposed to a
chart) and it is turned so that the handheld's long axis is E-W
instead of N-S, the map automatically flips 90deg to keep N in the
`up' position. I have a 30ft sailboat with hull speed 7.2kts, so I'm
generally more interested in the detail of what is left and right of
me, than I'm interested in what is directly ahead of me. Will the
viewed chart likewise flip when I rotate the handheld to get a wider
view, without my having to zoom out?

This auto-rotate feature is a function of the GPS itself not the
loaded map(s)/chart(s). You can turn it off if you don't want it to do
that.

Unfortunately I don't remember the exact menu item but try pressing
MENU while on the Map page and go through the option.

I think its these one's

Setup Map/General tab -> Track Up
Setup Map/General tab -> Below = desired map scale for "Track Up"

It is a waste of time and energy to discern points of interest ahead of you with
the tiny screen on a GPS.

FIND <Waypoint> or <POI> is far superior and has the added attraction of GOTO
immediately when you find the one you need.

While hiking or back home?

The later versions of MapSource (PC software) allows you to split/join
and otherwise manipulate tracks. That's the way I do it.

BTW even though the unit only logs to files on the card when you pull
them into MapSource you'll still have multiple tracks. That is if you
disable/reenable tracking a new track is started but its still in the
same file (one per day).

Here it is September, 2008, and I'm reading all this because I had the
same question (how to enter coordinates)and found the best answers
right here. Great forum!

I can't help thinking that if Garmin had a decent manual, the amount of
messages in here would drop by 90%!

I realize that I can split the tracks back home on the PC. But, it
would be nice if I could split them on the go.

I'll try turning the unit off and then back on and see if that causes
it to begin a new track file on the data card. Maybe it's set up to
just create and save one track per day on the data card.

Don't turn the unit fully off, just turn the GPS off...

Satellite screen > press the menu Button then the Enter button. Wait a couple of
seconds and do that same again. Much quicker than waiting for the unit to shut
down and reboot... :)

Well you can do that as already described (power cycle, GPS receiver
off/on, track disable/enable).

Yes you get one FILE each day but it can contain multiple tracks.

Anybody know if it is possible to make a mapset and save it to the
hard disk as an img file?

That's exactly what MapSource does when you save maps to the
GPS/removable card. It takes all the IMG files for the selected maps
and creates one gmapsupp.img file.

What are you trying to achieve?

Hello-

Is there a way to turn the display off, while the GPSU is still on? I
often carry mine backpacking/camping, and usually only look at the
screen about once every hour or two. Does the display use a lot of
power? (I have the backlight turned off). I've read that displays on
digital cameras use a lot of power, but I think that they are usually
illuminated. I'm trying to keep from needing too many extra batteries
if I'll be out for a few days.

Thanks,
Lex

If you go to the tracks set up page and change the data log frequency, it
will start a new section of tracks. You don't have to turn off the unit.

I do this when I need more data points. Like when I am on a 4 hour bike
ride, I start with it set to AUTO, MOST OFTEN. Then, when I come to a
particular hilly section, I switch it to TIME, 1 SECOND, and it will record
many more data points from which I generate the hill profile. Then I switch
it back to AUTO so I don't run out of track points.

When you download the data, you will have three track logs if you do what I
outlined above. Repeat as many times as you need.

Bryan

No.

The does itself uses very little power. That backlight does however
which is why there's a timeout feature for it.

That makes sense for a non-x model (10,000 point max) but if you're
logging to a microSD card just leave it on time 1 sec. Of course I'm
assuming that there's space on the card but considering that 8GB cards
are US$20.99 (at Fry's) cost isn't a big issue and you'll effectively
have infinite recording time.

True, but I like the idea that the certain section I want to make a profile
for is separate from the rest of the tracks. :)
