For those with a nuvi lifetime map subscription City Navigator North America NT
2010.40 was released yesterday and can be downloaded from your myGarmin account.
This installs MapSource 6.15.9 which is not (yet) available as a separate
download.

Have you noticed any changes in the new Mapsource?

According to discussions on some other groups 6.15.9 does not work with many
third-party maps.

In fact:

New lock system in force. Checks for a .gma file in PC to confirm correct
unlocked code. If .gma file do not exists, maps stay locked.

And officially:

The changelog of Mapsource 6.15.10:

1. Fixed an issue with the file save dialog when the file extension field is
hidden.
2. Fixed an issue where MapSource would crash if the route avoidance dialog
would be displayed twice.
3. Fixed waypoint category filter issue. Now only waypoints of the selected
category will be displayed.
4. Fixed waypoint prefixes.
5. Fixed an issue where MapSource would crash with certain address searches.

6. Fixed memory leaks in the waypoint dialog and map rendering.
7. Fixed an issue with saving gpx files when the file path contains Asian
characters.
8. Fixed some hotkey issues.
9. Fixed an issue with searching for certain POIs.
10. Fixed an issue with how unlock codes were stored that caused
incompatibilities with applications like Training Center.
11. Support Web Link Extensions in Brazilian Portuguese.
12. Changed waypoint image size to follow the user selected symbol size.

There are 2 versions, one distributed with CN America and the other with
Europe version

I am having the same problem. The new version of mapsource was installed as
part of the CNNA 2010.40 map upgrade. I am not too sure if the new map will
work if I downgrade mapsource.

Evidently Garmin did change/augment the unlock mechanism since I have the

Changes made from version 6.15.7 to 6.15.11:

* Improved performance for custom draw elements.
* Made sure waypoints of type 'Geotagged Photo' don't crash MapSource.
* Allowed the import and export of unlock codes.
* Made sure unlocking changes get propagated without needing to restart the
application.
* Phone numbers that were imported from gpx files were not written back out
again. This is now fixed.
* Added support for enhanced map security.
* Fixed unlocking issue.
* Implemented Asian 6-level address search.
* Improved trimming performance for some Asian map products.

Does this still have the unlocking issues reported with 6.15.09? I have a
lockable topo map for Australia that I really don't want to lose access to!

In that case locate the MapSource.exe file and make a backup of it. Then install
6.15.11. If you can't access the Oz Topo just copy the backed up MapSource.exe
file back.

OK, I'm the guinea pig then.

Done, Topo Plus does still work, using 6.15.11, no problems observed. But I'll
keep the previous version 6.15.7 just in case issues pop up down the track :)

The OzTopo website states:
DO NOT UPGRADE to this version if you are using OZtopo.

Garmin in their wisdom have changed the unlock code algorithms (deliberately??)
to stop third party maps to be unlocked and used with this version.

We are pursuing a solution as quickly as possible.

If you do happen to load V6.15.11 and want to downgrade to V6.15.7 please
download from : http://gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/MapSource_6157.exe

Is your 'fact' based on personal testing, or an opinion from someone else?
I have upgraded to 6.15.11 on my Win7 PC & it works fine.
However I have kept 6.15.7 my XP PC & laptop.

Ahhh! a different product from OzTopo.
Important not to confuse the two.
I think it best to stick with the advice from Brian on the OzTopo website.

OzTopo:
http://www.oztopo.com/
My feeling is that it better than the Garmin TOPO Australia.
A healthy range of opinion has been posted on the gpsaustralia.net web forum.
Also worth noting that the free 'Shonky Maps' work in the new 6.15.11.
Shonky has great topo detail for the Aust bush & mountain country, just does not
have the street detail in towns that OzTopo & Topo Aust have.

I need to copy about 500 waypoints from a database to MapSource and after some
manipulation/checking to my 76CSx.
Some training classes would be done using MapSource to shows marine areas with
respective waypoints,
some printing of charted areas with waypoints and also loading into the 76CSx
to use to navigate to the waypoints.

This would be a typical record for the waypoint.

You could write a C module for GPSBabel to teach it that format, but that's
a pretty hostile format for interchange. Fixed position columns are a
pain. If you have any control of the output, change that to something more
readily exportable. The coordinate format is not one I reocgnize offhand.
It's also not obvious what that first column is supposed to be.

If you control the database side of this, it'll be way easier to make the
format less weird so it'll Just Work with existing tools.

Global Mapper could do this, and output the result as a GPX that Mapsource
could read. GM reads .csv files, and it is almost certainly possible to
have your database tool output in something that Excel could read, or do a
direct read on. GPSBabel is a great tool, but it is for data tjhat is
already in one of the GIS formats.

You did not tell us what database tool you were using. If it is a
GEOdatabase, it should be easy - select a different output format.

I have no idea at the moment what DB tool is being used but will
inquire. I get an Excel sheet and copied one line as an example. So
some manipulation of the spreadsheet is possible. The first number
is an internal ID which could be used as waypoint number but that
could be a sequential number generated within the spreadsheet so it
could be referenced back. The lat'long I get is hddd* mm ss.s.
I will ask what options, if any I have. -Doug

I did a little experiment for you, it might be useful as it establishes the
format which can be converted into a GPX file - it is sort of reverse
engineered.

I accessed a GPX file with Global Mapper, stripped all of the tracks and
left only waypoints, then output the result into a .csv and opened it with
Excel. I am certain it will work the opposite direction.

If the data is massaged into the format below, separated by commas, one
waypoint per row, the conversion should work. The data is a little strange,
in that the timestamps are in a field named "Layer", but hey, it is froma
MapSource file after all - no problems with compatibility or standards
there, it has none!

The long and lat must be decimal. The Label is arbitrary, this is from an
area called WolCott . All of the values are not required, you just go
",,,,," if fields are missing - the example would be 4 missing fields.

-Doug

Oh darn, the formatting was all lost when I opened my copy . Should be:

LONGITUDE LATITUDE LABEL LAYER ELEVATION sym

I can send the spreadsheet if you like.

I'm keeping my eye out for a used 76CSX and I have read that these have used 2
different receivers. Which has proven to be better and how can I tell which one
a particular unit has? Serial number maybe? Thanks.
