Hi,
I just changed the SD-card in my 76CXs to the one from TOPO Germany V3 and now I
get all the time a rather loud beep when I shut down the Garmin. And this
permanent beep could only be stopped by pulling out the batteries.
Reset was done, without any effect.
Any idea for better stopping the noisy beep?
Bye, Stefan

With this release for XP, SP 3 is required.
I use XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, version 2002, SP 2.
As I don't want the laptop slowed down with the extra bloat of running
the internet and all the protection software; how can I install SP 3?

I've found the answer. After much searching, M$ do an 'all-in-one'
standalone update file:-
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe
It's a massive 324MB and designed for systems support upgrading many computers.

I was going to post a link to this yesterday but wasn't sure if it'd update the
Tablet Edition of XP.
FYI, for all group members, Microsoft is ending support for Windows 2000 and XP
SP2 in the very near future. That is why Garmin, and others, are dropping
support for them.
MapSource v6.15.11 runs on Win2K and XP SP2. You can obtain an updater
(MapSource_61511.exe) for that version here:

Custom Maps.
* Improved user feedback while transferring to folders and devices.
* Improved reported information when Garmin Custom Maps cannot be
imported.
* Changed to allow transfer of partially downloaded BirdsEye Imagery.
* Added ability for BaseCamp to attempt reading all Garmin map
images (.img files), regardless of name, from removable media.
* Fixed issue when using Find with a map that does not have a city
table.
Downloaded and installed OK on XP-SP3.
Figured while I am there I would check for updates for land and marine. 75$ for
a 2008 update to replace a 2008 version. Is that the best we get? And the
marine update is not much better.
Of course the current version of Magellan for my iPhone is more than two years
off. It does not even have my town in it and my house was only built in 1923.
Sigh.

It is a package. I am guessing it is the less detailed gps map sets.
I have not noticed any newer offerings from Garmin. Have I missed any new
releases of note? With that sale price, I could suspect that the Dakota is
going to join their discontinued soon enough???
Thoughts.

THANKS.
Now if only I could figure out the difference between the two more expensive
ones. The compare charts seem to indicate a difference in MAPS (besides the
basemaps) but I cannot find out what that difference is.

And under Handhelds, they no longer show the Dakota - so it is gone or going?
But, again, thanks for the info. This explains the "firesale."
They do still show the Dakota under handhelds if you are on the 'on
the trail' side of their site.

This version is having fits trying to communicate with the 76csx. Errors out
when transfer begins and then I have to reinstall the USB driver
(USBDrivers_221). It is consistant and nothing else is plugged into the 2 other
ports. The 76 is in the same port as usual.
Anyone else encountering errors?Doug

You might try v2.3 of the USB drivers (available since June 2009).

I've had no USB issues with MapSource 6.16.1.
Thanks. I tried v2.3 this AM. In Building map set, got to 98% complete, 4
seconds remaining and got the "There was an error communicating with your
device. Please make sure your device is plugged in and....".
I wonder if there is something funky in my BlueChart map set it is building
since it errors at the same point. I will start a new small map set to test.

If you're getting an error during the "building" stage its not a communication
error with the GPS. Do you have enough free space on your hard drive? MapSource
creates temporary files and if the mapset is large you'll need plenty of free
space.
When using my 76CSx for hiking, the indicator triangle does not point in the
direction I am travelling or to the final waypoint (off-road setting). Although
I will eventually get there, it does not seem to be pointing "track up" or
leading me there.
What are the best settings to use for hiking regarding Mode (I assume
Pedestrian), intervals for recording, any other recommended map or unit
settings.
The unit works great on the road, but I feel that it could be set up better for
walking.
Thanks,
Ron

Does your unit have an electronic compass. i.e. is it a 'S' model?
Calibrate your compass.

Assuming it has one. And/or hold the unit horizontally.
