There is a function under the waypoints page that does this – but often it is just as easy to simply expand the scale out a few levels.  If you have loaded or saved a waypoint, it should be clearly visible as a pushpin or the symbol you chose in MapSource for that particular stored point.

Subject: [Garmin_GPSmap_76C] Nearest Waypoint Screen

Hello Fellow Garmin users,
I'm reading a book by by Robert J Sweet called "GPS for Mariners".
It is an excellent book which ties together the use of a GPS and paper nautical charts.

Sweet talks about a valuable page in many GPS receivers called the "Nearest Waypoint Page"

I can't seem to find this page in my Map 76CSx.
Does anyone know whether this is page exits in this unit?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Rick.

That URL leads to a "page not found" error.

I'm not a fan of TinyURL because the end user cannot see where it'll take them
(e.g. to a porn or malicious site). That's why I post full URL's. I use the
Linkification add-on to Firefox as it converts plain text URL's to clickable
links.

I'm sure Bob's intentions were good but as a general rule I don't click on
TinyURL links because of the risks involved. That said I'll leave the decision
to every member as to posting/clicking on them.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see anyone else post this point of view,
which doesn't simply match my own but expresses the same rationale.

I write to mention that of the URI shortening services TinyURL is one of
the few that does provide a version with an intermediate step. This
allows those choosing to follow/visit to view the destination URI first.
It is optionally generated by that service and inserts the word
"preview" in the path. e.g. http://preview.tinyurl.com/64cmuvv

(In spite of the ease of use many folks manage to overlook the link
labelled "Proceed to this site.")

While I _can_ copy a TinyURL, paste, insert "preview", view the
destination URI, then go there, I usually choose to neither bother doing
that nor follow the truncated link.

In all cases these services offered us truly exist for the benefit of
the creator or who ever is hosting it. That is, noting, tracking,
compiling behaviour, and selling it. This might give one less motivation
to follow them and to go off and search for the document using one's
favourite search engine (generally not Google, directly anyway).

Thanks to all who have posted on this topic.

Cheers, JD

Once you "preview" a tiny URL, the preview mode continues to be enabled, via a
cookie created within your browser. Thus, any future tiny URL links will
automatically be previewed for you without your having to manually insert the
"preview" word.

I have a number of routes and tracks that I want to export from Mapsource and
import into my DeLorme Topo USA 4.0 program. Why? I want to print the elevation
profiles. I am using the City Navigator NT maps in Mapsource.

Topo can import the following formats:

RTD, ANR, RTE, RTS, TXT, Street Atlas USA 6 thru 9, and AAA Map-Go 5 thru 7.

Nowhere can I find the format for the text file. I tried the TXT version you get
when you export from Mapsource, but this was the wrong format. And, all these
other file types?? What the heck are they?

Maybe I can export from the Mapsource as MPS or DXF or GPX into some
intermediate (and free) product, that would then allow me to convert to one of
the acceptable DeLorme formats.

Maybe I am going at this the wrong way. All I want are the elevations for my
routes and tracks. Is there another way to do this?

Bouncing through GPX and/or GPSBabel would be productive experiments to try.

Good suggestion about using GPSBabel. After some trial and error, I got it to
work. Most formats did not import at all. But among those that did import, some
humorous things happened along the way:

1) A 30 mile ride became 100 miles.
2) Instead of the route being in Massachusetts, it was in the Persian gulf.
3) Instead of 10 via points, I got 200.

So, for those of you who are interested, here is the GPSBabel solution:

1) Translate from Mapsource GDB to DeLorme xmap SAHH 2006 Native text.
2) The GDB must contain only 1 route.
3) Select the GDB option called "roadbook", which you get when you check the box
"Include major turn points from the calculated route"
4) Check the Waypoints check box
5) Once the TXT file has been created by GPSBabel, edit the TXT file to remove
the last half of the file. This is a duplication of the route.
6) Import the TXT file into a new route in TOPO USA.
7) Assign a name to the new route.
8) Click the radio button for (*) Road
9) All done.

See ... wasn't that easy!!!! ... Andy

Later Garmin software inserts more control points that you'd guess.

Doesn't Delorme handle GPX these days?  Also, Earth will do elevation profiles and it reads GDB.  It uses GPSBabel to do so.

Actually it pounds/newtons (according to one press report). But if they
got that wrong they probably got all of the other dimension units wrong. :/

Thanks for the reminder. The install was much easier this time, compared to last
time. I was prompted for the location where to store the files; last time I did
this, there was no prompt, and the files had to go to:

c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\Garmin\maps

Last time I installed a new set of map files, I did not have enough space on my
C: drive, and it was a real pain to put them on my F: drive. I ended up creating
a shortcut on the C: drive in the default folder which pointed to the actual
folder on my F: drive. With this latest install, the creation of the shortcut is
done for you.

You are required, however, to have at least 5 GB available space on your C:
drive. I don't know if that's a holdover from the previous requirement to store
the files on your C: drive, or if they need that much working space during the
install.

Now, here's a question: Is there a defined procedure to GET RID of old maps, or
do you simply delete the folder in which they are stored?

The installer needs working space. If that's an issue you can try relocating the
Windows temp folder to another drive.

I don't know of an "official" method. I just delete the old folder.

I should have looked there. Yes, I think you are right. In my 'Add or Remove'
window, I have the following entries:

Garmin City Navigator North America NT v8
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2010.20
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2011.40 Update
Garmin MapSource

The 'v8' must be the original map. I could start out by removing the 2010.20 and
see what happens. Of course, I would not remove the MapSource.

The advantage of using the 'Add or Remove' feature is that it cleans up the
computer registry, that internal database that keeps track of various software
programs, where they are, and what libraries they use.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Subj:[Garmin_GPSmap_76C] 76CSx replacement

Well I sent my GPSMAP76CSx back to garmin because of the broken battery contact
on the 14th of FEB, they got it on the 17 and I had a replacement on the 22.

Now my question is how do I tell if I have the SIRFSTARIII or the other chipset
in this one?

Software Version 4.20

GPS SW Version 3.00s

Thanks

If I remember correctly, the s after the GPS SW version designates the SIRF chipset.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  :-)

No reason to correct you.  This is a FAQ of the group dedicated to those models:

Ya that's what I thought also, and I got a hold of a buddy I know got his before the change and it was the same as my replacement.

Thanks

Here's a simple (I presume!) question from a rank beginner: How do I enter notes
into my 76CSx calendar? I know how to do it on my old eTrex Legend, but the 76
has me puzzled. The Owner's Manual is of no help.
