Thanks for the alert. I know last time there was a "full" Junction View/Lane Assist download that was much larger from the one that comes as part of the update. If I recall, the full file is tied to a specific map update. Is that correct and if so, any idea where the new full file is?

I haven't had a chance to go looking for it yet. I'll try later today as I want
it too.

I have been using these http://www.smc.org.uk/ContourMaps.php for many years now.
Very easy to add to Mapsource in XP using the included registry file - which is also easy to edit :)

I've just been forced to buy a new PC with Windows 7 on it, and can't get it to work now :(

Anyone come across this as well, and found a fix for it ?
I've emailed people and not heard anything :(

Any help gratefully received :)

Hi Nick
Possibility one, run the software in xp compatibility mode.

Possibility two, download basecamp from Garmin and see if you can use that.

I'm just trying to run Web Updater.
It can't find the GPS.

I've tried using Mapsource and that can't see it either.

I've updated Mapsource to 16.15.11 and downloaded the latest USB drivers and
installed them.

I've tried 2 different cables...

Still can't see it ! :(

Mapsource was connecting last weekend...

The only thing I've done is to reinstall the maps - 108 tiles = 386MB, using my
new laptop with the micro SD in the USB 3.0 card reader - which took 5 minutes
in all from clicking the button in Mapsource for it to have them all on the card
:) !
The GPS can see all the new maps quite happily and will route using them... I
can also see the waypoint layers that are on the card.
I can also set the GPS to Mass storage and see the card and files and transfer
files to and from the card that way...

I'm not too keen to set the maps to be installed via the USB 1 interface that is
the GPS norm as it takes many hours !!!! Just to find that it's not that...

Any thoughts ?

I'll bet it is the cable, with a Prolific chip.  See if you can find and download the most drivers for that chip.  Some of those chips are copies of the original and have been known to cause problems on W7.

I use an FTDI based cable that always works well,  whether with the gps or ham radio (radio control).

I've tried a couple of other USB cables too, all proprietary ones that came with things like USB HD & Cameras etc...
Not sure how I work our what type of chip they've got in them - didn't realise that the cables had chips in them !?

Hi Nick:

oops, my mistake, I meant serial to usb cables. But you are using a straight usb cable so there should not be problems.

I'd say download again the drivers from Garmin, install again and see if that helps.

I just read this at POI Factory (posted this morning)

"A Garmin Software Support Specialist has replied to my question. There will be
no large jcv file offered by Garmin for the new 2012.40 map update; and for the
nuvi 8x5 series, the size of the jcv file that will be part of the update's
installation is about 45MB." -- CraigW

I wouldn't give up hope yet for a full JCV file like some nuvi's get. Give it a
few weeks to see if that statement is true. Also someone might be nice and
upload it somewhere.

Here are two tid-bits I've found:

On the handhelds like the 60CSx you have to go to the Interface menu and set it as USB device before it's recognized.

=—____________________

I was having the same problem, but was unable to update the drivers in windows. As I was trying to get the Garmin software to recognize the GPSr, I noticed that when I turned th unit on, it would briefly display the message "transfer complete" on the unit. I discovered that if I hit the "find" button on the garmin software shortly after powering ht unit on, I could get it to see the GPSr. The "window" of available time was pretty short, so it didn't work every time, but a few tries would allow the software to see it. By doing this, I was able to get the web updater to update the firmware on the unit, and after I did htis, I had no problems.

Speaking of not finding the GPS, my computer will talk to my 76CSx with no problems, GSAK works with it no problems, took the latest update for my 62s and low and behold mapsource still works with it, GSAK on the other had won't send anything to it, it generates the file and when it goes to send it to the GPS it just closes the screen as if it sent it.  It was fine before the update to 2.80 from 2.60.

Anyone else seen this?

I re-read your first post and have a few ideas.

Try connecting with the card not inserted in the gps.  Did that make a change,  if so see if the card was formatted in the right format,  which I can't remember off te top of my head.

You know that mapsource can send files to the uSD card in the SD slot?  That might make a difference.

Try a different uSD card.  Maybe yours is bad in an some place.

The microSD(HC) card MUST be formatted as FAT or FAT32. It will NOT be
recognized if it was formatted as NTFS.

I'm read through the thread and didn't see what model GPS the issue applied to.

In the 76C(S)x you can see the status of the inserted card (if any).

Main Menu -> Setup -> System (press MENU) -> Card Info

Photos/AnnoyedOne's/76CSx screen captures/Card Info (6GB)

I've no idea if this is possible with the 62S models.

Thanks,  annoyedone, the size of the uSD card is also a factor.  I believe the gps is a 60csx.

Let's see what Nick will have to say.  He's from across the pond,  so I'd say unable to respond at this time of the day.

Shouldn't be if the firmware is up to date. I've tested a 16GB card in my 76CSx.
A 32GB miscoSDHC card should work but I don't have one to try.

Last year my Garmin 2610 failed and I've been unable to find a new
GPSr that has all the features I used with the 2610.

So I thought I'd buy another 76CSx, so that when it also eventually
fails I'll have a replacement. Discovered the same problem - no
current GPSr that has all the features I use with my 76CSx.

So bought the closest possible, an eTrex Vista HCx and also a DVD with
MapSource CN Europe.

After registering both on the Garmin website, I've been offered a time
limited free download of newer maps.

However there is a big BUT. The maps will only download to the GPSr
and not to a PC.

Is it possible after such a download to transfer the maps from the GPSr to a PC?

If I can't get the new maps to a PC there is no advantage in getting
new maps just on the GPSr.

Anyone any suggestions?

Reg

Map updates (not a newly purchased product) can be downloaded to your PC. On one
of the dialogs there's an advanced button that allows you to select where the
map update is saved

Device
Device and PC
PC only

> Is it possible after such a download to transfer the maps from
> the GPSr to a PC?

You might be able to try the update again but this time select "PC only" (since
your device is already updated) as above.

With some models (e.g. nuvi's) Garmin's free BaseCamp will display and use
(updated) preloaded maps on the device. The 76CSx doesn't have preloaded maps so
that won't work in your case.

I've missed something. If you have CN NA NT 2012.40 and install this JCV file,
will it provide the lane assist function on the 76(C)Sx? I don't recall hearing

No. The 76C(S)x models don't support lane assist/junction view. Only some nuvi's
do.
