of that registration process, we just provide the

State "CT Number".

In providing this information, we discovered that there
is a large percentage of organizations WHICH DO NOT
HAVE THIS NUMBER. Opppppsssss!!

select U.S. funders

Websites

-- Searchable index of over 352,000 trustees, officers, and donors

Getting Started

This tutorial is an introduction to the Foundation Center's CD-ROM
database of private U.S. funders.

appropriate search fields that identify potential funding sources,
view grants records, and recent grantmaker funding history. Navigate
grantmaker profiles from associated grant records and between grants
and grantmaker files

-- From Across the Street to Around the World: explore a wide range
of geographic search techniques to find funding sources at the city,
state, national and international levels

-- "Play the Field" or "Stay on the Subject:" the many implications
of using fields of interest versus subject indexes to identify
funders in your area of activity

-- Creative Text Searching: use wildcard (*), numbers, stop words,
and phrases to uncover information that does not appear in indexed
fields

-- Art of Boolean Searching: use And, Or, Not, Near to narrow,
broaden, and limit a search

-- Customizing Search Results: sort list results, mark records, affix
personalized notes to selected records, save and print your work

for a SPECIAL EVENT!

Join us for a FREE product demonstration provided
by Social Solutions, LLC on
Wednesday, APRIL 13 from 9-11am
at the Nonprofit Management Solutions office at
8265 Vickers Street, Suite C.

Discover first hand the Efforts-to-Outcomes approach
and supporting software that is enabling hundreds of
Human Services organizations to better track services,
demonstrate results and increase funding.

Efforts-to-Outcomes (ETO) Software was created to
demonstrate and celebrate the daily victories of
direct service staff. Social Solutions Founder
and President, Steve Butz (a former direct
service worker and program director) will be
presenting in person.

Urban Corps of San Diego described the
impact of Social Solutions' ETO Software this way:

"Prior to ETO, compiling basic statistics would take
hours, and often days—to add ethnic and gender stats
would take even longer and require input from 3 different
departments. In addition, the stats would change on a
daily basis and oftentimes information, although
correct, would be 3-4 weeks old.

At the "touch of a button" ETO is able to create
reports, provide up-to-the-minute statistics, build
graphs and generate visuals. It is saving us time,
money, and human resources, while at the same time
painting a picture that not only tells the story of
the Urban Corps to potential funders, but also gives
us a clearer vision of the strengths of the organization,
as well as the areas that need help. As we become more
experienced and familiar with the software and its
benefits, we believe it will allow us to fulfill our
mission of serving the youth and communities of
San Diego even better."

Learn how ETO Software Provides:

Direct service staff with a tool to make their
jobs easier Administrators with a resource to improve
decision-making Funders with a demonstrated return
on investment This is a free software demonstration
open to all. For more information call us today,

This refreshing alternative to the old fundraising mentality
ultimately builds sustainable funding and gets the organization off
the "treadmill" of year-to-year fundraising.In this Raising More
Money Introductory Session, you will learn:

Subject: FRAUD DISCOVERY INVESTIGATION ON 60 MINUTES
GrantWrtr

Hey guys --

You all know how I feel about scams which target nonprofit
organizations. Those that violate the trust of people
who devote themselves to helping their communities, are
the vilest of creatures.

In March and April, we assisted in an investigation of such
a scam by reviewing materials and contracts of a group
offering a "too-good-to-be-true" funding opportunity.
The man we worked with is the genius behind the
Fraud Discovery Institute. You can learn more about him
at www.frauddiscovery.net. His name is Barry Minkow and
he has a terrific book on spotting fraud as it walks
through your doors with a smiling face. <grin>

Well, 60 Minutes was involved in exposing this scam
which offers "matching funds" to faith based and nonprofit
groups. It involves depositing the matching funds into
a bank account in Texas. The contract allows the scammer
to set up so many hoops for the fundee to jump through,
no organization could possibly fulfill their mindless
requirements. This puts the nonprofit in breach of the
contract, and the scammer can freeze the banked funds without
ever having paid the nonprofit a dime in matching monies.
Then they will look to drag the court proceedings out
for years, unless the nonprofit settles out of court
for a hefty percentage of the banked money.

It's enough to break your heart. Honest.

Well, 60 Minutes hopes to air their investigation this
Sunday, May 15th, at 7:00 p.m. If something else comes
up it will be moved to a later airing date. But let's all
keep our fingers crossed. Not just because this is important
information to get out to the public, but because their
Assistant Producer, Joel Patterson, has promised to
mention the team at GrantWritingSpecialists.com and our
part in helping out the investigation. <grinning from ear to ear>

So, join all of us as we tune in the Channel 8 (CBS) this
Sunday night. Have a beverage in your hand. Everytime you
see us get credit, take a swig. <grin> It's the new GWS drinking
game -- with milk, coke, or whatever. <grin>

Subject: SCAM TO RIP MILLIONS FROM NONPROFIT GROUPS
GrantWrtr
Send Email Send Email

Hi Guys --

Last Sunday, 60 MINUTES, reported on the scam which the
team at Grant Writing Specialists is proud to have been
a part of exposing. We assisted Barry Minkow of the Fraud
Discovery Institute (http://frauddiscovery.net)by
evaluating the terms of the contracts which the scammers
provided after an undercover sting operation in Texas.

This rip-off goes under the heading of the The Nehemiah Fund.
Do NOT visit their website unless you totally understand
that what they are doing is a SCAM and its target is uninformed
nonprofits and churches and schools. Their sole intent is
to steal your money. I find it especially distasteful the way they
use God's name to do so.

The website is: http://thenehemiahfund.org/

They purportedly have billions of dollars to give to nonprofits
in matching funds. THIS IS A LIE. They get the nonprofit or
church or school to put an equal amount of funds in a bank account.
The contract they have the program sign gives all the control
over to them for compliance with their terms. Then they immediately
start creating requirements that no nonprofit or church or school
could possible fulfill in the timeline they set up. This puts the
organization in breach of contract and they can freeze your funds in
the bank account without even giving you a penny. At that point, they
can either tie it all up in court or can offer to settle for a hefty
fee. They get their money and the nonprofit or church or school gets
ripped off.

The 60 MINUTES piece focused on Barry Minkow, his background
as a scammer and why he now devotes his time to exposing other
scammers. The part we assisted with is covered below:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While we're researching this story, Minkow received a tip about a
Texas couple, Debby and Eric Berry. They control two Dallas-based
companies called Genesis Capital Management and Genesis Alliance,
which bankroll a non-profit organization called the Nehemiah Fund. It
promises a 100 percent matching grant to churches willing to put a
minimum of $500,000 into a bank account controlled by a
representative of the Berrys.
"Genesis Capital, Genesis Alliance and the Nehemiah Fund is what I
believe a financial crime in progress," says Minkow.
What makes him so convinced that it's a crime in progress?
"All the red flags, every one of them," says Minkow. "No
accountability from the Berrys. They just are one-man shows. The
untenable business model: Normally and regularly people who are in
the grant business don't ask for your money first before they double
it."
Minkow decided to go undercover and apply for a matching grant.
Wearing a hidden camera provided by 60 Minutes, which was concealed
in a pair of glasses, and carrying a phony bank statement prepared by
the FBI stating his church had in excess of $2 million, he met the
Berrys in a Dallas restaurant. One of the first things he asked was
how much money was in the fund.
Minkow: What can I say without being misrepresenting to my elder
board?
Debby Berry: Tens of millions.
The Berrys told Minkow the money for the matching grants comes from a
commercial venture they control called Genesis Capital Management,
which they claim pays out a return of 300 percent on investments
totaling more than $1 billion.
Eric Berry: Ethanol plants, dairies, apartment complexes, resort
hotels…
Minkow: You're in all that stuff?
Eric Berry: Different stuff, yeah.
Minkow: Amazing.
Minkow searched the public records but was unable to turn up assets
or holdings consistent with the Berrys' claims. He did find
outstanding tax liens against the Berrys totaling more than $240,000,
and discovered they were operating out of three small rooms in a
Dallas office park.
"They give you 3-to-1 your money back if they're in a business with
you commercially – 1-to-1 if you're a non-profit," says Minkow. "They
claim to have $1.5 billion, and they operate out of 900 square feet
where they share a secretary with everybody on the floor? I mean, I
have a church and our budget's like $1.8 million. It takes like eight
elders and 17 employees to run $1.8 million. How the more $1.5
billion? It's just misrepresentation after misrepresentation."
To get an independent evaluation of the Berrys' operation, 60 Minutes
went to Sean Delaney a former assistant attorney general in New York
state, and an expert in charity frauds. We gave him Minkow's report,
and transcripts of all the taped conversations.
"It has the indicia of a Ponzi scheme. And yes, it appears to be in
its early stages," says Delaney.
"What's your general impression of the work that Barry Minkow has
done on this?" asks Kroft.
"For someone who does not have the tools of a law enforcement agency
at his disposal, Mr. Minkow does quite thorough work. I was impressed
with his report," says Delaney.
"If you had money with the Berrys right now, knowing what you know,
would you call up the Berrys and say, 'I want my money back?'" asks
Kroft.
"I'd demand my money back in writing," says Delaney. "And I'd hire
myself a good lawyer."
The Berrys have not been charged with any crimes. They declined 60
Minutes' requests for an interview, and for copies of their latest
financial statements. But since Minkow issued his report, the FBI,
the Texas attorney general and the Montana auditor's office have all
begun investigations.
Positioning Grant Writers for Success
Some of the most heated discussions in the nonprofit world centers on
grant writing. Why? Because so much is riding on it. It is the rare
organization that could continue to carry out its mission anywhere
near as effectively if its grants dried up, and for many, such an
occurrence would sound the death knell.
By: Tony Poderis
Of the three basic sources of money for non-profits -- earned income,
donations from individuals, and grants -- the process of getting a
grant is the most puzzling. All but the smallest organizations are
likely to have people on staff or use outside counsel who specialize
in grant writing. The demand for skilled grant writers, coupled with
the mystery that seems to surround successful grant writing, leads to
some troubled areas for development professionals and non-profit
organizations.
Two questions are central: How do you evaluate the performance of
grant writers and what can you do to aid the grant writing process?
How Do You Evaluate The Performance Of Grant Writers?
I have seen many resumes with statements like the following, "The
grants I write are awarded funds 80% of the time." A recent query to
an Internet newsgroup by an executive director asked, "My grant
writer has a grant success rate of 41%. How does that compare with
the standard of other organizations?"
Grant writers touting a high percentage of grant attainment to
impress potential employers are in danger of setting themselves up
for failure. How many of us would want to go into a new work
environment with the expectation that 80% of the grant applications
we submit would be approved? Not me!
Executive directors who see the success or failure of grant-getting
as residing in the hands of the grant writer are failing to take into
account something even more important than the grant application --
the purpose of the funding. Poorly delineated projects, "soft"
budgets, and a host of other weaknesses cannot be overcome by a well-
crafted grant proposal. The awarding of grants has more to do with
function than form, and grant writers are not usually the ones who
make the policy and practice recommendations that lead to a search
for funding.
When it comes to measuring performance, I believe grant writers
should be evaluated on the quality of their work. What I expect of a
grant writer as written into a job description might read something
like the following.
The grant writer will:
Through interviews and other means, gather information that will
easily allow him/her to grasp the concept of a project or program for
which funding is sought as defined by the person responsible for
carrying it out.
Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the
organization, and use that knowledge and understanding to better
comprehend all projects and programs for which grants will be sought
and to recommend the seeking of grants.
Research grant-making organizations and analyze them to identify
likely funding sources for specific projects and programs.
Compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong
expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and
spelling.
Review the budget of a project or program for which funding is sought
and make recommendations to better present it to grant-making
organizations.
Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-
making organization's preferences and follow exactly each grant-
making organization's guidelines.
Keep in contact with grant-making organizations during their review
of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply
additional supportive material.
Manage the process of supplying progress reports when required by a
grant-making organization that has funded a project or program.
Any grant writer I hired was expected to carry out the above duties
well. Doing so left me satisfied with his or her performance. Grant
award or no grant award, the grant writer was successful. It was
never my grant writer's job to get the grant; rather the job was to
make the best case possible to appropriate funding organizations.
What Should You Do Before Engaging An Outside Grant Writer?
Accomplished, experienced grant writing consultants are in demand and
they are not cheap. Therefore, you should do as much of the
preparation work as possible yourself. This will allow you to spend
your consulting dollars where they are really needed -- the actual
grant writing. Also, the better prepared you are, the more likely you
will be to attract the best grant writers. Before you engage a grant
writer, you should already have:
Defined the project or program you want to get funded.
Developed the essence of your "Case for Support."
Identified prospective grant sources for the project or program.
Determined who will actually solicit the funds and how they will do
it.
Begin the definition process by first setting your grant-seeking
priorities as they fit within your organization's long-range
strategic plan and mission. The three basic areas for which you are
likely to be seeking grants are:
To create new programs and services.
To support ongoing programs and services.
To provide annual operating funds.
Then clearly and precisely define each project or program for which
you will seek grants in terms that grant-making organizations will
recognize and respond to. Make sure that while you're doing this you
also plan for life after the grant. How will you support the project
or program in the future if it is to last longer than the timeframe
covered by the grant? It's a question every grant making organization
will want answered.
Be certain that you have reasonably determined in advance the scope,
intent, and "case" value to the community of the project or program
you wish to have funded before you engage a grant writer. If you ask
the grant writer to do this, he or she will have to learn your
organization's capabilities and community's needs in the specific
areas. It makes no sense to pay someone on the outside to do this.
Identifying the sources most likely to make a grant to an
organization such as yours for the purpose you have defined is
crucial to the process of grant application. The public library, the
Foundation Center, your trustees, and others in your community are
excellent sources of this information. Check your state Attorney
General's office to see if it publishes a list of foundations. Go
through other non-profit organizations' annual reports to look for
funders. Then be sure to contact as many foundations and other grant
making organizations as possible to get their grant seekers'
guidelines and grant awarding calendar.
While most experienced grant writers, particularly if they operate in
your geographic and "services" areas will know such information,
doing your own research will let you better direct the grant writer's
efforts. It is not hard to do and will establish a process and
routine you can follow in future grant- seeking opportunities. Plus
the information and expertise stays in your organization.
Never ask a grant writer to be the actual solicitor of funds. You and
others within your organization are the best people to present your
case. Why would you want a grant writer with whom you have a
temporary relationship to represent you to grant makers? Why let the
outside grant writer build a personal relationship you or your
trustees could be nurturing? Besides, foundations want to meet the
people who operate and are committed to an organization --- not an
outsider on a temporary hire.
Prepare well before you engage a grant writing consultant and you
will save money while putting your organization in a better position
to attain the grants for which you apply.
Hi penny woman of many resources............
I have noticed in the past that you have sent out
mass e-mails for job postings and stuff- I was
wondering if you could send one for me???
A few of us from SAS are heading out to
Mississippi to help a group called
AUTISM RESCUE.COM.  They have a camp ground
facility that will house 350 displaced families
with members who have a developmental disability. We
will be going into shelters to ID these folks
and bring them to the camp site. The obvious main
focus are children with autism.The first 6 families
are arriving today
Our goal is to gather supplies and $$ to take with us.
We Will be assisting with setting up educational and
sensory activities for the children. We are looking
for donations to include arts and crafts
supplies/paper/paint/watercolors/glue/glitter etc
for art projects also small trampolines $20 @ wal mart),
toys,books for children and of course $$.
SAS is accepting $$ on behalf of this org. People can
donate to us via cash/check/credit card or directly to
Autismrescue.com
Penny,
We happen to have several 800 square foot, shop or
laboratory spaces available for start-up technology
companies.
If you want to add it to you broadcast email, it
might help someone find the assistance they need.
Best regards!
Mark
San Diego Technology Incubator - Mission
The mission of the San Diego Technology Incubator is
to support economic revitalization by nurturing start-up
and fledgling technology, technology service and
manufacturing companies. The San Diego Technology
Incubator provides reasonably priced facilities,
business development, computer network, laboratories
and support services to assist potentially viable
companies intending to develop products with a significant
technology element. This strategic assistance enables
resident and nonresident affiliated new companies enter
the commercial marketplace with the strength they will
need and be competitive manufacturers, suppliers and
employers, thereby contributing to the strength of the
economy in the San Diego Region. The San Diego Technology
Incubator is a joint project of the City of San Diego
and the San Diego Community College District. This 20,000
square foot facility supports the economic development
of the region by sheltering and supporting new technology
ventures, early-stage and emerging companies honing their
ability to succeed during their "incubation period" of
from one to three years. Professional assistance offered
includes: technology assessment, funding assistance through
technical R&D grant/proposal writing, guidance in structuring
technological links with other businesses, Internet website
design/hosting access, to manufacturing demonstration labs
and making referrals to other regional economic development
resources and subject-matter experts. According to a study
by the Small business Administration, Coopers and Lybrand,
and the National Business Incubation Association, the
majority of new businesses fail within the first five years,
but companies starting in incubators have up to an 80%
survival rate beyond the 5-year milestone.
