   Hi Mike,
Thanks for asking! The newsletter is a reflection of HAT, and as such,
I appreciate the opportunity for input into "our" newsletter.
Our mission is to serve, educate, and support equine interests
in this area, and it is up to us to provide input to you, to further
this endeavor. Why no one has offered ANY suggestions on this forum
is odd.

As many of your know, HAT's monthly newsletter, HAT Chat, has just started it's
8th year. From the beginning, I have tried to put together a publication that
offers you, our members and readers, with news and information that is
interesting, timely, and useful in going about your daily routine with your
horses.

From time to time, I try to reach out to everyone to find out what they think
about HAT Chat today - do you like it, hate it, or don't care - and to ask if
you have any suggestions or ideas for improving it. To get you started, here is
a list of the the columns that appear in almost every issue:

- A word from our President (a monthly note from the HAT President)
- Meeting Minutes (from the previous month's HAT meeting)
- State/Local News
- National News
- International News
- Legislative Update
- Equine Science News
- Business/Industry News
- Equine Services Directory (the reason I started HAT Chat in the first place)
- Activities Calendar
- HAT Sponsors
- Showbills
- HAT Show Results (the month following a HAT show)
- The Advertising Pages
- Extension Service News (notes from Denton County Extension)
- A Bit of Humor (always good for a laugh!)
- Ask The Vet (timely health information from local vet Katie Hayes)
- Recipe of the Month (always a favorite)
- Special features (such as announcing our Scholarship recipients, or the
Stallion Showcase) and additional flyers for HAT events (such as the current
flyer page in the July issue announcing our October show)

I'll bet you didn't realize so much was packed into each issue, did you? In
terms of articles, we actually have as much written material each month as the
Lone Star Horse Report - the difference is, they have tons of advertising taking
up most of their space.

Now that you have an idea of what you can expect to find in each issue, is there
anything you'd like to change? Maybe add stuff for kids? Or something about
training? How about more pictures from events or just from members showing off
their horses? Or maybe we should remove something you can't use? If you've
thumbed through an actual issue (rather than reading the online articles on the
HAT website), is there something about its overall appearance that you'd like to
see changed?

I will go ahead and address the number one thing that comes up whenever I ask
for suggestions like this: when will HAT Chat be printed in color? Believe me,
I'd love nothing more than to produce a color newsletter, but there are several
technical and financial obstacles that are keeping us from taking that step. The
costs continue to drop, however, and I'm sure that one day it will happen...we
just aren't quite there yet.

So, there is your challenge: look at the newsletter, tell me what you think, and
tell me what you'd change if you had the chance.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

Thanks for your response!
We hope to have this event planned soon, and most likely will have
it in June, since May has several events already planned. Especially since we
have had so much rain, rain dates will be used up too!
We hope this Obstacle Course event will be of interest to a lot of people, those
who show, trailride, or just ride their horses when they get a chance should be
able to enjoy this event

We were interested in knowing if our "Obstacle Course"
event would be something that a lot of people would enjoy
participating in? We would like to include everyone,
and every type of horse. If you can lead a horse, you should be
able to find something in this event you can have fun with!
The idea is for people to get out, meet fellow horse owners,

We have been brainstorming about doing a new, fun event.
It is an obstacle course competition, with fun things to do and learn with your
horse! Sally has talked with me about this before,
and thought it would be really fun, and after I saw some of the NH Show
classes this past weekend, I thought we might look into doing
something fun like this too! We are not trying to copy the NH show
or compete with their activities, but just have some something
new to do with our horses that everyone could participate in!
We are coming up with ideas for the obstacle course, and want to
invite everyone to share their ideas for some interesting course
obstacles! Please feel free to contribute your ideas!

    Hi Mike,
All of these organizations are worthy of our support!
One thing we could do is donate tack that they might need,
there are many of us who have some things that we don't use anymore
that might be of use to these programs.
I also like the idea of a charity horse show, or the "Bribe the
Judge class that I have outlined before in previous discussions.
We could do one in every show, and be able to donate to all three
of these groups!

Over on the main HAT message group, there was a posting left this
morning by Sally Thomason about a fundraiser that was held for the
new SOSU Therapeutic Riding program. Their goal was to raise $100,000
to build their facility, obtain equipment, and hire a director. Her
note indicated that they are looking for individuals and groups that
would be willing to volunteer or provide support to their program.

I think that it would be beneficial if HAT as a group could offer
some sort of support to a program like this. However, there are
several such groups in operation around this area, including Hannah's
Horseshoes of Hope, Equest, and Grace Lake Ministries, and each of
them certainly deserve support from the greater horse community.
HAT's resources at times are also fairly limited, especially in these
days of recession. So, my questions are:

- is there any way that HAT could provide any sort of support to any
of these organizations?
- what sort of support could we provide - volunteers, money, ?
- would we support one particular organization or all of them, and
how would we choose?

For the record, we have had some contact with three organizations:
Hannah's Horseshoes of Hope had an information table set up at one of
our horse shows a few years back, and one of their volunteers (Rachel
Newman) was the recipient of a HAT Scholarship last year; Holly
Robinson, the director of Grace Lake Ministries, gave a presentation
on her organization's programs at one of our monthly meetings; and
Lisa Turner, wife of the SOSU President, contacted me last month to
thank us for listing their recent fundraising event on HAT's
calendars.

That pretty much throws the idea out there that I had on my
mind...any comments or ideas?

Hello everyone!
I know I am not the only person on this group with ideas!
This "Ideas" forum is for everyone to contribute their
thoughts and ideas! This does not mean that all of the ideas
we come up with will be implemented, but it does foster
discussion, which stimulates more ideas! I think "brainstorming"
may be a good term to describe what we might do on this group!
Give some input, and let's see what happens!

What does everyone think about a "'charity" type horseshow
for a fundraiser for the HAT scholarship? We could
keep it simple, and also do some fun classes, like the one
I have suggested before, "bribe the Judge"? We could also do some
demo classes, where less familar types of horse and riding
diciplines could be showcased. Perhaps since this would be
for funding a scholarship, we might get the Loy Lake indoor arena for
no charge?

Hello Everyone,
I found out that the Christmas light construction at Loy Lake Park
starts right after the Grayson County Fair is over. It takes them
several
weeks to get it all together, and we want to be free from the set up
of the support systems for the Christmas lights along our riding route.
What about a date right after the Fair? They will still be cleaning up
that next weekend, and maybe won't be setting up the grid for the
Christmas lights yet.

This October idea sounds like a good one to me. Checking the Longhorn's schedule, if it were held on the weekend of Oct. 24/25, I can attend. Otherwise, I will help plan the event and cannot be there due to schedule conflicts. Saturday, Oct. 31, is Halloween; following Sunday might work.

Hat has decided to change this event date, the date will be
decided upon at a later time. What would everyone
think about making the end of year event one that was held in
October, the month that memberships are renewed? We could have a fun
trailride, like our Ride in the Park, at Loy Lake. The Christmas lights
aren't put up until November, so we would not have that issue. Also
they have a great pavilion with a place to cook and eat! We could
combine a Tack Exchange, and an auction with the tack that
was not exchanged or sold, and use the money to pay for the food,
and supplies. This could be a membership drive event!
What do you think??

   Hi Cheryl,
It is my understanding that there wil be prizes at every show,
in several divisions. Someone who is on the show committee will
have to post on here and explain exactly how it is supposed to be.
Thanks for you interest and input!

Thanks so much for all this great input and discussion!
This is what can help HAT grow, and be more effective in the
horse community! We are all interested in keeping the equine
activities going in this area, and this is a good way to get
people active and interested!

This is very long, and I apologize up front. I meant to respond to the
posts about year end prizes, but life got in the way - again!

Generally, in my experience, overall year-end prizes only include
certain classes for western and english. Whether it's for daily high
point or year end, these ideas are pretty common:

Mostly, the walk/trot or walk/jog classes are not included in high
point standings - just the main classes: Showmanship, WP, Horsemanship
and Trail, and for english: Showmanship, HUS, Equitation and Trail, or
if you have another class, i.e. jumping, etc.

I can't remember exactly what classes you have, but you get the idea.
That way, someone can't get extra points for classes they "know" they
can win, eliminating that issue.

Also, if a person enters the walk/trot or walk/jog classes, they
sometimes are not eligible for the WP or HUS (regular) classes. Of
course, a lot of people like to use the walk/trot and walk/jog for warm-
up classes, so you could just make it a non-point class and it wouldn't
matter. You don't have to keep up with sklll levels, you just only
count the classes that count. Keep it simple! Someone will let you
know if someone enters on a different horse - you can count on that!

The w/t and w/j classes can be for anyone for any reason, whether it be
coming back from an injury or just too green to go in the regular
classes (either rider and/or horse), or whatever reason. Then, anyone
feels welcome, especially when there are people with more experience
around to help and advise if they want it. I always learn from people
with more experience than me (or maybe less - we can learn something
from everyone!), and I love it!

And, it is always 1 horse, 1 rider with no exceptions. If your horse
gets hurt, you just have to try again next year, because that's the
only way to be fair to the other competitors.

Even though I like it in some ways, I have not seen that year end high
point encourages participation, although it is nice for one who picks a
set of shows to stick with for a season. A buckle is always a nice
award for putting your effort into a season! But, it tends to give
people an out or even discourage when they're not in the running and
something else comes along to do. It's easier to miss a show, which
lets down the association that is depending on those entries to pay for
the prizes.

For these reasons, the daily high point prizes is probably a really
good idea for this group.

Also, I believe it is the nature of horse shows - it is very difficult
to keep a following and keep growing. Mostly, you grow a little and
then you lose some - that's just the fickle way of horse people! :-)
We change with the wind sometimes, and we also have lives outside of
horses that unfortunately interfere with our horse goals sometimes.
It's probably not that anything is wrong, that's just the nature of the
business. I have been through quite a few seasons of show series as
well as speed series, and this tends to be the way of it.

I really hope I get to participate this year! Limited time, along with
a little fear of riding are a couple of issues, but my 4th and last
child has started college, and my Mom is going to a nursing home soon,
so MAYBE this will be my year!

Thanks to all who have stuck it out with HAT - it's a great group, and
its volunteers are invaluable!

Patti

How fun!! My husband got involved with an internet Tractor Club for his Ford Tractor and they did a calendar...my husband was soooo excited when his tractor was selected for the 2009 calendar that he bought 12 of them at $12.00 a pop!  Everyone got one for Christmas! LOL...
The person who put it together put 4 pictures on each month so more folks got their tractors on the calendar.  They ended up selling 300 of them...not too shabby!  It was not a fundraiser so the price was lower, but it was also a lot of work for the guy who put it all together (taking it to the printer and getting them all mailed out and the money collected.)  It is a great idea for a fall project so they would be ready for the New Year!

What about a HAT calendar featuring HAT members and
their horses to sell as a fundraiser? Who wouldn't want
to buy a calendar with their horse, and friend's horses
on it?! I would buy one for myself, and some to give as gifts!

If you are referring to Willow Wood Ranch it is fairly inexpensive to ride there....I think $10 per person is what I was told last summer by the (former) ranch manager.  I haven't ridden there yet personally but from what I  have been told it is very nice with a range of different terrain including hills, woods, creeks and wide flat fields.   I know a person who lives right off of that property who I could probably get to give us a bit of a guided tour since he rides there all the time. The ranch also owns it's own Hay and Chuck Wagons...it might be fun to incorporate them somehow. One easy way to raise money to pay for trail fees and food would be to do an "auction".  Everyone bring something that they no longer need or make something homemade..anything you want.  At the end of the ride have the auction while munching on hot dogs or whatever and that money would go toward the following trail riding gathering.  My family does this to raise money for the family reunions each year, it works well and it is so much fun to bid on all the fun stuff that people bring!  We also do a potluck but the auction "pot" pays for the main food, drinks and the cost of the reunion place.

Debby,

You are correct - there are no plans for HAT to offer Year End High
Point awards in 2009. We are looking instead at increasing the number
and/or value of the Daily High Point awards at each individual show.

I'm not sure I recall the particular church you're mentioning, but I
do know there are several such places in the area that I'm sure would
like to discuss hosting events for us. The only downside might be
that some of those places would be looking for us to pay for their
facilities in some way, but it may be something that can be
negotiated.

Mike
