I actually go through 4 words a day and have them say the word, count syllables, say sounds, count the ssc cards needed and then write the word on their whiteboards. Its a great way for them to hear sounds and recognize what we are also doing with phonics as well.

I also have my kids write the words in 3 different colors with markers, crayons, or colored pencils.... (not 1 of each type of media. Written in all the same media just different colors). I have them fold a lined paper in thirds and write each color word in one color and then move to the next section and write the word again in another color......

You could also have lots of letter tiles and have them search for the tiles to spell the words written.

I created these Power Points using a template our reading coach had originally done. However, they are power points so you would need a laptop and projector. The kids love them!

I use the phonics sounds that we practice during the week. I give a pretest on Monday using some of the average words for that list. If the kids get 100% on the pretest they get the challenge list, if they miss 1-5 they get the average list, if they miss more than 5 they get an easier list. The kids have the same activities to do during the week, they will just have different spelling words to practice.

I use many of the same activities others of you do during the week, but for my actual spelling test I say the word. The children write the word and write a sentence using the word. That way they are not simply remembering the word for a short time and then dismissing it. Many of my students are ESOL. I want to know they know how to use the word and well as how to structure a sentence. I grade them by giving 2 points for spelling the word correctly, 1 point for correct usage of the word, and 1 point for capitalization and punctuation. They understand the rubric and generally do very well.

During the week, in addition to spelling homework, we have a spelling routine in class. "On Monday we "cheer" the word (Give my a "b", etc. What does it spell?) as we cheer the letters I write them on the board and the children write them in their agendas. After a couple words the children compete to tell us the pattern (short a's and i's for instance). We discuss the phonics in each word as we go and use the word in a sentence. I write each word in a different color. This helps my ESE students. On Tuesday a student is the "teacher." They have the individual words on sentence strips and stand at the pocket chart. They ask "Who can tell me the first word in alphabetical order?" (The homework the night before was to put the words in alphabetical order so everyone is ready.) She calls on a student who has raised their hand. After they correctly identify the word she says "Very good, " or  Good job" and puts the word in the chart. We chorally say the word, clap each letter as we spell the word, and say how many syllables it is. If it is a compound word we say "compound word - sun and shine" for example. Then she asks "Who can use this word in a sentence?" After they respond correctly she says "Good job." and proceeds through the list. On the following day a different student does the same thing, except for the part where we put the words in alphabetical order since that has already been done. We do this each day. We take turns in alphabetical order by last name. (We also hand test papers in in "Grade book Order" which simplifies my life.)

Do a google search for "Spelling Activity Cards" you can find a PDF document with many different activities. I have the kids practice these in the classroom and I have them practice at home.

For spelling tests I read the word, say the word in a sentence, and say the word again. The kids only have to write down the word.

when you get to Google, click on "Advanced Search" and then type "Spelling Activity Cards" (no quotes) on the second line--Exact phrase. Then go on to the drop down for how many results you want and make it 100 (you won't get that many, but it saves going from screen to screen of search results). Then go to the drop down for File Type and choose PDF. THEN click on Advanced Search at the bottom...it thins out the results quite nicely. :)

A friend had the kids make draw a big dipper on dark blue construction paper
using a white or yellow crayon and put gold stars on the star points. Not
reading but enriching and pretty.

I created these Power Points using a template our reading coach had originally done. However, they are power points so you would need a laptop and projector. The kids love them!

Hey All!
Tina is awesome and she has been typing up the morning messages for those of us who have the older version. Her year is crazy so she will send them to me as she has time. I will send them to the group once I get them. She will also work on the journal topics when she gets a chance.

Thanks so much Tina!

Michelle

I have the 2005 version and they are labeled Daily Writing Prompt and Daily Message.  If your series doesn't have them let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.

Hi I'm struggling to  find them too. I have  the older ca series. If you look in  your TE on the  Daily Lesson Planning pg  Theme  1 pgs 12A/B  Under Writing  and  Language
it  Has  Daily Language  practice  so go to that page 41L . Then it  has  pics of  transparencies. I'm thinking  those are the  sentences  to correct. I'm  still not finding  any journal prompts though. Maybe  we are  suppose to make them ourselves? Do you  have anyone on your second grade team to ask?  My team is  all new  to second grade  except  for one teacher so we are waiting to ask her . If  I find out  more I'll  let you know. this  TE is  not as  east to follow as  First grade's.  Carol--- On Fri, 8/28/09, Michelle Weiss <michelleweiss22@ yahoo.com> wrote:

I have the 2003 CA version. If anyone can tell me where the journal and daily message are hidden, that would be great!

There are both.  If you have the new program it is on the first page of all the days.  If you have the older program I am not sure.  :)

I just moved from being in 4 years of 1st with HM to 2nd grade. There were components that I LOVED doing in first that i am not finding in 2nd.

Is there a daily journal topic? Is there a morning message?

We have back to school night next week and I am trying to update all of my slides for my presentation.

Thanks in advance!
Michelle

I am creating Writing Journals for our second grade.  I am following the format from first grade.  I will upload them as I make them and save some of you the time and energy.  I have the first three done for Theme 1 Week 1,2,3.  They are on my school computer so I will upload them tomorrow.
Thank you for all of the other material you are all so willing to share!

Andrea

Has anyone used this?? I teach 2nd and 3rd grade and this looks interesting and
really helpful. I am willing to pay the $49 license, but was wondering first if
anyone has used it and found it worthwhile and also if I could access both 2nd
and 3rd grade with one license.
Thanks!!

Sincerely,
