The family trees on Ancestry show her as Mary Louisa Couchat from
Alsace-Lorraine, France B: 19 May 1831.
My Louise Couchot was born 19 May 1830. Coincidence? I don't think so!
I wish I could find (Jean?) Pierre Couchot and Xavier Couchot with some
certainty in the Highland area. That would seal it. There's a Peter Couchot in
Troy, NY who "might" be Pierre - having come from France in 1853 or 1857 or
maybe 1840 depending on the source. But I'd think they would have all come
together.
Prof. Alzo Rosselot of Otterbein College is supposed to have tracked down the
entire family and put it into a book form. That might help answer the question.

I believe I stumbled upon an interesting connection while researching my
Galliet/Galliett family tree that might be useful to someone who is trying to
trace the Rosselott family of Highland County. If anyone can fill in more
information, please do!
Recently, the Territory of Belfort, France released their microfilmed records in
digital form at http://www.archives.cg90.fr/ They even have detailed census
records every 5 years for villages like Bourogne which trace the families really
well starting in 1836 (for Bourogne). They also have the civil records showing
births, deaths, marriages and publications of marriages. I'm told they have
military records as well. This makes things soooo much easier than going to a
local Family History Library and staring at microfilms.
So I started to trace all the descendants of my Galliet family and started with
the first one I came across in 1836 - Marie Galliett who married Xavier Couchot
in 1833. She was a sister of my GGGrandfather Louis Galliet of Mowrystown. Alas,
she had a daughter out of wedlock before marriage in 1830 - Louise - who was
adopted by Xavier.
I followed the family in each census. In 1849, 13-year old Marie Couchot
apparently came to the US with Louis Galliet. (a real head scratcher there.) She
vanished from the Bourogne census at that time and a Mary "Couch" or "Cossot"
showed up living with Louis Galliet in Mowrystown in 1850. It appears she
married a Francoise Antoine in Highland County about 1855.
Then I noticed 3 other children of Marie (Galliet) Couchot vanished from the
Bourogne census after 1851. lisa90.org had no record of them getting a passport
at Colmar like so many others had done. Louise was 23, Pierre was 19 and Xavier
Couchot was only 17. I thought I'd check Ancestry to see if they were on a ship
list and voila! There they all were in 1853!
The question now was, where did they go after they arrived in the US? Most
likely they'd go to their uncle Louis Galliet's place in Mowrystown where their
sister already lived. If not there, to another uncle - Jean Pierre Gaillet - in
Stark County. I was stuck for a while. Finally, I checked the excellent website
at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
It didn't show any of them directly, but DID show that a Louisa/Louise Couchot
was the mother of several members of the Rosselott family - a fairly prominent
French family near Mowrystown. Looking at the 1860 census shows her and the
Rosselotts living amid the Euverard family in Clay Township near Mowrystown.
My question is - has anyone else made this connection? Does anyone have more
conclusive information? I'm still researching the family. Oddly, I already had
the Rosselott family in my tree, so now I'll have to be careful to link the two
branches together.
There are some Lawwill's on Find a Grave. Quite a few are buried in Brown
County also which is the neighboring county. Also you might try Rootsweb. It
has quite a few on it. Sorry I didn't have time to look for any specific names.

There are a couple Lawwill's buried in Martin Hill Cemetery. It is in Brown

I would look into contacting Funeral Homes. Since you know the family it shouldn't be difficult to determine what funeral home was used.

Thank you again for the information. I have the Euverard Family histories both the one compiled in 1949 by Schoon and Carnes and the update in 1981 by Ethel Euverard. One unfortunate thing about the extensive research in both these documents is the lack of dates. I think there is another Euverard family tree done by descendants of David Euverard but I do not have a copy of it. You may have notice I have posted photos of Edward and Sadora on my ancestry website. These were among many photos belonging to my mother, Kitty List King. Unfortunately, many are not labeled.
Descendants of William Valentine and Etta Drusilla List are having their family reunion at Lawshe, Ohio the 9th and 10th of October. Veryl Vane List Clark is the only child of this family still living. However, she will be unable to attend because of poor health and dementia. However, there are many "cousins" scattered about the United States and we usually have around 100 in attendance. I'm sending you an invitation and you would be more than welcome. Also, several years ago, we put together a "List" web site. Because of "spam" it has not been as active as when first launched but you might find it interesting viewing. You should be able to find her death certificate at

I haven't traced her father's line very far, but her mother's family - the
Euverard or Euvrard family has been traced way back in France. Either see
Rootsweb (free) for info on that family, or Ancestry ($) for the Galliett family
tree.
I don't show any children for them, but it's possible they had some. Apparently
she died shortly after the 1930 census.

Thanks so much for the response. And you are correct - there are many different spellings of Meneely. However, to my knowledge my family were all out of Ohio by 1850 and I don't show a John or George of that age.

Hello All,
Does anyone know anything about Madison Township in Highland County? I had a distant Uncle (Philip Kuhn) that lived there from about 1850-1890's. I have old German letters that were sent to him from a distant Aunt. I had the letters translated and I can tell by some of the letters that Philip Kuhn and his wife Christina suffered hardship with their 2 children. A boy Philip must have died young and a daughter Christina shows as an invalid on the 1870 census. The wife also shows as temporary deranged?
My grandfather who lived in Cincinnati ended up with the letters somehow. Does anyone know of resources other than census that would have any information about the Kuhn's in Highland County?

Noted the request and wondered if the spelling may have been different later. In the 1850 census for White Oak Twp., HC we have a John McNealy (spelled in deeds as McNeely) age 27 born in Ohio, wife Mary A. age 25 born Ohio and Sarah S. age 3, born in Ohio. Next door we have George age 72, a farmer born in Va, Elizabeth wife age 69 born in Ky, Sarah age 38 born in Ky, and Joseph age 20 born in Ohio.
You can rule them in or out of your family line being searched. Jerry E. Pruitt.

Is there anyone who has access to 'Marriage Records of Highland County, Ohio, 1805-1880" by David N. McBride
and/or "Cemetery Inscriptions of Highland County, Ohio", by the same author?
If so, would it be possible for you to do a lookup for (1) Hannah Meneely, born February 4, 1808 in Troy, New York; and (2) her sister Ann Meneely, born March 24, 1810 in Troy, New York.
I know they lived with their parents (John and Isabella Meneely) in Highland County and family members attended the First Presbyterian Church in Greenfield. I have a reference to Hannah and her mother being members of this church in 1829, and another sister Margaret was married in 1830 in Greenfield. The family left Highland County between 1840 and 1844 for Indiana.

The surname MENEELY is not in the index of "Cemetery Inscriptions of Highland County, Ohio" by David and Jane McBride so there is no reference to this name in this book nor do is see this surname in "Marriage Records of Highland County, Ohio" by David and Jane McBride
Could there possibly be another spelling?

I will check next Tuesday when I go to the library in Columbus and let you know what I find.

I have looked on the find a grave site, I have looked on the new family search sites. Ohio doesn't seem to like to give up its information freely or easily.
Jacob Deardeuff was married in Botetourt Va in 1808 to Sarah Elizabeth Staily. He shows up in the 1810 census there, and in the 1820 census in Brush Creek Fayette county Ohio. The county line must have changed because he is the the 1830 census in Brush Creek HIghland county. In the 1840 census he is gone. He died Feb 1840 and was buried in the Suiter-William cemetery in Brush Creek HIghland Co. His wife shows up in the 1840 Brush Creek Highland Co census as Sarah Dearduffs. Their son Stephen is also there. In the 1850 census Sarah is there along with several of her sons, Jacob, George, Stephen, John, Thomas and William living nearby. In the 1860 census most of the boys except Samuel have moved to Indiana. Stephen's wife Margeret is remarried and living in Illinois.
There was a yellow fever epidemic in 1857 or so and I am wondering if Stephen died there.
The Botetourt VA records have been destroyed by fire so I can't find anything out there about Jacob.
Many people have confused Jacob with a Jacob Deardorff who married an Elizabeth Lesh and settled in Lanier, Preble, Ohio. He was in that census in 1820. As a result, they in their family trees all over the Internet have given Sarah Staily to him as a wife as well as her children as his children. Dunkards did not plural marry!
I have a feeling that Jacob Deardeuff changed the spelling of the name to stop the confusion between him and Jacob Deardorff. I have a feeling they are related to a Peter Dierdorff from Bedford VA because Peter's wife's maiden name was Yeager and Jacob and Sarah have a decendent named Yager Deardeuff through Stephen. He is my husband's grandfather.
I have not yet found wills for Brush Creek Highland Co. I would be grateful to have a link. I went to Salt Lake and read every book in the Highland County section searching for these things and haven't found anything. I can only find a will by Elizabeth Deardorff Stailey giving Stephen's brother Samuel most of her estate. Elizabeth married Sarah's brothers. I would be interested to learn if she was Jacob's Deardeuff's sister. An Elizabeth and Jacob Deardorff were orphaned under the age of 14 and there is mention of them and their father Henry in the Botetourt Co records. And a Jacob Deardorff was witness at Elizabeth's Wedding to Stephen Stailey (Sarah's brother) in 1809 in Botetourt. Elizabeth lived in Brush Creek from 1920 until she died in about 1870.
Is there a way to find out marriages and birthdates from 1820-1840?
Having exhausted ancestry.com and also new.family.search and google and yahoo and every book I can find on the subject I am just fishing for more leads. It seems that anyone who is searching for more leads on the family names associated with him get stuck here also. Shoemaker, Roush, Rhoades, Stailey.
