THE NETHERLANDS:

Anne Frank Family Snapshots to Go on Display

Personal snapshots of Anne Frank's family will go on display in Amsterdam
and Berlin this week to mark the 75th anniversary of the birth of the
Jewish teenage girl killed in the Holocaust, organizers said Tuesday.

``The Diary of Anne Frank,'' in which the young girl describes her
family's two years in hiding during the German occupation of the
Netherlands in World War II, is the most widely read document to emerge
from the Holocaust.

``Knowing what happened to the family, you cannot look at these
photographs as just ordinary pictures,'' Anne Frank House spokeswoman
Patricia Bosboom said of the exhibition.

``It's a happy family life you see. It's an ordinary family. It
illustrates the normality of their life but you know the abnormal way it
ended,'' she said.

Anne Frank, whose diary has been translated into dozens of languages and
sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, died in a Nazi concentration
camp after her hiding place was discovered.

Around 60 black and white photographs -- mostly taken by her father Otto
Frank for the family photo album -- will go on display Friday, one day
before she would have celebrated her 75th birthday on June 12.

Some of the snapshots, which include images of Anne and her sister Margot
as infants, the family enjoying a day at the beach and attending a
birthday party, are being shown to the European public for the first time,
Amsterdam's Anne Frank House said.

Amsterdam's Photography Museum and Berlin's Anne Frank Center will host
the exhibition, which first showed at New York's Kraushaar Gallery in May.

The photographs are part of a collection of more than 400 taken by Otto
Frank, who was the only one of eight people to survive the concentration
camps after they were arrested on Aug. 4, 1944.

Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945,
just weeks before it was liberated.
