Good day to you!

Yes it does seem that getting into the bow would be comparatively
cheaper than the foot soldier role. Yes I totally agree that kog
really knows his stuff and I am grateful for answering all of my
questions.

I myself am in financial difficulties. I do construction work but things
have been slow lately. I am sure that with practice one can develop
many useful skills and save quite a bit of money. That is why I need
to keep focused and what aspects of medieval warfare that I am
more interested in.

Yes if I do decide to get into archery I would guess that somewhere
I could find bows and a reasonable price. As a matter of fact I heard
that there was a guy around here that made  English longbows.
However he was to expensive for my friend. So I know if I do get
into archery I should not have a problem finding what I need.

I am amazed at how helpful and friendly all of you are, especially
to a guy that you really do not know. I would love to one day meet
all of you and express my appreciation.

With Respect,
Thomas

good day thomas,

i have found that archery is one of the most inexpensive hobbies that one can get into in the sca. another friend got me back into archery, but i have found out so much more from kog.

i am a student at the moment, and am also in a financial bind. i am having to buy cheap aluminum arrows that are all black. it is not truly authentic, but it works. i have also heard that making your own arrows can cut down on cost. it is just one of those things that pay off over a long period of time.

and i am sure that you can find decent bows. i would recommend a maker, but they have gone out of business. i recommend finding people in your kingdom like kog that can give you better advice on that front.

hope that you find out what you like and have a great time doing it. all of us here in lyonnesse get to meet you someday.

sincerely

I'll let His Highness know you are seeking him.  He has been working massive amounts of overtime the last month or so and I have barely seen him or spoken to him myself as his phone access at work is extremely limited.   He will be at SSBB this weekend if you are going to be in attendance.  I am not sure of his work schedule this week - but will pass the message along.

I wanted to take a quick moment and offer apologies on behalf of both His Highness and myself for our lack of due diliegence the past couple of months.

We are in the process of purchasing a home currently.  House hunting began at the beginning of July and the entire process has consumed our world.  We have found a home in Charlotte, are nearing the end of the purchasing process, and are in hopes that we will know what our actual moving date will be before the end of this week.

Please bear with us during this transition process - we hope to be settled, unpacked, and ready to get on with medieval fun in just a few weeks!

Many thanks, my friend.

As much as I wish that I could attend this particular SSBB (I've heard wonderful
things) I cannot due to work (lol, I understand the constraints of work).

Thank you again,

Thomas,
Not sure if I replied to this post yet or not, but my two cents worth says that getting into archery is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than getting into armor and fighting.  If your intent is to armor up for the purpose of participating in the fighting the required helmet alone could easily cost as much as an entire archery kit.  On the other hand considering you are likely to be hit with a ratan weapon, that would be solid bamboo, then having safe armor is not a choice but mandatory.  The object is to have fun and not kill each other.  I personally have an armor kit for a military archer which includes a full chain mail shirt, coif and kettle helm.  I also have a basinet from my combat archer days.  For the military archer I also have an archer's short sword and an archer's ax.  I use this stuff for demos only, I have retired from the combat archery - too much dinking around with the rules, the knights hate archers and do everything in their power to remove the activity, and the amo has gotten very expensive, about $5 per and you should have at least 100 shafts when you go to war.  So now days I observe and advise combat archer wannabees.

Greetings,

Thank you again for the advice you have been very kind
and helpful. I can only imagine the cost for a fully armed
knight/foot soldier but I am not adverse to saving up my
pennies. As for getting hit by a ratan weapon goes I
sometimes think that a few people believe that I already
have been!

You seem to have all of the accouterments needed, that could
not have been cheap either. Since you are not doing combat
archery it is good that you can still be involved and educate.
That is a noble endeavor.

I am grateful for your time and effort. You are a good man and
I look forward to discussions that we might have. I wish you
all the best.

With Much Respect,
Thomas

You do have cabin space - looks like cabin 203!

Snacks, drinks, cooler, chair, etc.

There are parties going on Friday and Saturday night and lots of non-fighter activities during the day on Saturday - so in addition to the archery you should have plenty to do!

I'll be on site about 2 pm - anyone arriving before 5 pm will be asked to assist with set up!  :)

See you this weekend!

Keat,
You are covered for two at feast.  Come to the atlatl battle or the archery range at 2:30 (champion's shoot) or court and I will give you the feast tokens.

Enjoy,

Yes indeed, I have a piece of deer antlter (horns are permanent, antlers get shed yearly) for your bow.  We can discuss if you would like that added.  But I have piece of leather for re-wrapping you grip.  We can discus, at the event, what you would like done to your bow, but know I will be prepared for both conseqences.

I will most likely be on site Wednesday.  I have to set our camp and the thrown weapons range for my lady.  Thursday will be fine.  If you want to shoot ThursDAY go ahead and use your bow then we'll work on it at night.  Thursday is good for me.  I've got a class Friday then the atlatl battle but that's late afternoon.

My buddy Pinky will be at WoW vending.  He makes atlatl darts as well.  His are a bit thicker diameter than Psaltery Dream's which might make then last longer.  Pinky also makes very cool knifes which is his main thing.

A few of us were talking this weekend about the future of Lyonnesse. As there
has not been any activity here for a very long time the obvious question is "Do
we want to continue?". If the answer is YES, then what do we want to do and/or
what direction do we want to go? Do/should we make any changes? If YES, what?

Let's get a discussion going here.

Who exactly is interested in getting this going again?

What exactly are each of you willing to take on and do?

What exactly are you looking to get from this group that you are not finding elsewhere currently?

I would add a question that, from my perspective, is part of Isolde's last question below.  The question What is/should be the focus of this group?  i.e. What is it we are trying to accomplish we cannot get somewhere else?  (Isolde's question.)

Originally I was so very excited to be a part of Lyonnesse because of the
opportunity to avoid some of the mistakes of other groups, as well as being new
enough to be ABLE to change things when need be (I recognize that changes are
much more difficult in large organizations).

I was also excited at the possibility of being able to "start over". I had
realized that I had lost my way in the Society and felt that I had "missed my
chance" to do many of the things that I had originally joined the Society for.
Also, I was happy to a part of something "from the ground floor" and know the
faces of everyone involved for quite some time to come.

The kicker. Allow me to be honest. My wife and I came to feel that everyone
involved was playing in Lyonnesse only as a "supplement" to the SCA. It seemed
that scheduling of activities was always at the mercy of SCA events. The other
difficulty (just for me personally) was that I never have regular weekends off,
due to working at the casino. This can make attendance somewhat problematic, as
I have to ask off well in advance to get a weekend off, and if my request is
denied, I have no recourse but to work. My wife is currently working 6 days a
week and I work Wednesday through Sunday.

Beyond these points lie the factors or real-life concerns to which we all must
answer (kids, extended families, regular vacatons, etc.).

What this all means is that, given the state of things when we last gathered,
there was little reason to play Lyonnesse versus the SCA, as it seemed to us
that everyone's priority and energies went to the Society.

But make no mistake, I have been proud to be involved in Lyonnesse and was sad
to see it "fizzle out".

My contribution to the discussion,
~Edmond~
