Subscribe to webfares from Air New Zealand and Qantas for starters.

Air NZ recently had a fare sale but not sure what period it was valid for.  Check out their website for details of what may be available.

Exactly when fares may drop is anyone's guess.

You may also want to check out online sites such as www.orbitz.com and others such as travelocity [IIRC they have a service where if a fare drops below a nominated price, they will automatically email you to advise you of it].

Be very wary as to if online prices quoted include taxes etc, conditions of sale i.e. non-refundable etc.

It pays to spend a little time and check prices/conditions with the airline directly.    In the US, if you phone the airlines, they are required by law to state if a lower fare is available online.  Many have gotten around this by saying 'a lower fare may be available online'.

Hi Elise,
My son who is USA based is back in NZ at present and he travelled Air Tahiti Nui. He booked through John and found the service great.

I just returned from a fabulous trip home for Xmas and New Year.  So hot in ChCh  Yes -- temps ranging from 25-40C (77-104F) -- more like Feb/Mar weather than December.  Even flew back on the "Frodo" Air NZ plane.

A month or so ago, someone (was it Bob Brewer?) was inquiring about using cell phones in NZ, and possibly renting Sim cards.  The answer is yes, you can rent a NZ cellphone or take your US phone (if it uses a sim card) and rent a NZ simcard.   Apart from free incoming calls on this plan, the cost for outgoing calls seemed about the same as my t-mobile costs.  Anyway, check out  www.vodafone.co.nz

Happy New Year to everyone

Thanks for the info Gene. It seems that my AT&T phone even though it
has a simm card, is locked. Could not get AT&T to unlock it.

I could use my phone with the AT&T simm but the cost was going to be
$2.40 per min. Can't remember if it was NZD or USD.

On another semi related topic - I had trouble finding any free wi-fi in
NZ. I just purchased a sniffer so finding open bandwidth should be
easier next trip.

Anyone familiar with Wi-Fi in NZ outside of Wellington?

Sean -

Did I miss something - The lowest fares I saw were almost double what we
paid in October / November - $499 RT Air New Zealand.

If fares are that low, I'm going again but with an even weaker Yankee
Dollar.

I have found that most cell phone companies in USA the telephones are simlocked, but hopefully with the new law passed ( where you can keep your # when changing servers) this might abate somewhat. Its allwas good when buying a cellphone to ask if the phone is simlocked. I have been asking this for 3 years now after reading about the pratices of various companies.

I have had two T-mobile phones that I have not had an issue getting the simlock removed. For that reason I am a committed T-mobile customer.

Have had ATT and Verizon who were next to useless when it came to using phones outside the USA.

I have T Mobile Hotspot on my account in the USA, When I was last over in
the UK last year I discovered that the USA account does not work overseas.
As far as I am aware T Mobile is not in NZ.
Most Hotspot providers allow you to buy a day or even hour pass.
I usually just buy a prey pay sim if I am overseas as that means that you
get a local number so people don't have to ring your USA # to get hold of
you. Also usually the local call rate is cheaper than the T Mobile roaming
rate e.g. Vodafone NZ rate was NZ$.99 last time I was there.

Just because a wireless network is 'open' doesn't give you the right to
use it if it is not intended for public use. Yes I know its very
careless of someone who hasn't taken even basic steps to secure their
network. Its similar to if you see a house or car unlocked. Its
careless on the part of the owner and they might not get much sympathy
from the police or whoever but it still doesn't give you the right to
move in.

Cheers
Ross

Unlike Gene I think tMobile is the worst service provider and I have had more problems with my phone then you would believe. Dropped calls, dead batteries, sheesh. I cant wait to change to a new provider.

Gene, when tyou say it's regarded as a local call in NZ, what number do you get to call??  Is it your USA TMobile number?

What I mean is, when I have my US cell phone in NZ, and for example my husband (in California) calls me in NZ on my cell #, it is a local call for him, because we both have phones in the same area code (whether he's calling from his cell or our home phone).   I do get charged $1.99/min for the call.  When I'm in NZ and I wish to call a NZ number, I just dial the area code and the number.   If someone in NZ wants to call me on my cell when I'm in NZ, they dial 001-area code-my cell number, but it's not considered an international call for them, because my cell # is now linked thru Vodafone NZ, so it's a local call, with them only being charged minutes.  Confused?      Sorry about your experience with T-Mobile.  Maybe it's the phone you have rather than the service.  I live on the coast, where it's sometimes dodgy with phone signals - hopeless with AT+T -- but I have been very happy with T-Mobile -- no dropped calls, dead batteries or anything.     And frankly, the fact that I can use my phone worldwide puts T-Mobile streaks ahead of anyone else.

Dave/Bob
I'm a T-mobile customer too, and love them.  I do not have a simlock on
my
phone.  As soon as I turned my phone on in NZ (or Europe) it
automatically
changed onto their band, and signed on to the local phone service --
Vodafone in both cases.  I did see a couple of internet cafes in ChCh
offering wi-fi link ups.  I actually thought my T-mobile charge of $US1
99/min. for calls (both NZ domestic and calls back to the US) was
comparable
to renting the NZ simcard.  And for family/friends in the US calling my
cellphone, while I was in NZ, it was considered a local call.

I'm not moving in, just visiting.

I have an office in Portland, Oregon which has more free Wi-Fi than any
city on the planet. (check out nodedb.com to see [mostly] free APs all
over the world). I'm involved with Personaltelco.com that utilizes donated
bandwidth and installs antennas for free use by the public. Guess my
perception of the rest of the world is similar. In Personaltelco's

This is about the funniest topic we've had for weeks!

But without cutting and pasting all the actual bits from the emails here's
my two pennies worth.

The salesman who said your phone would work in NZ was almost certainly
right, but his angle was probably that you could just connect to an
affiliated provider of his company and that people would have to dial your
US number to get you. It would be expensive but of course it can be done.
But the original topic question was about using a local SIM instead, and you
can do this with Vodafone NZ, but not if your phone is locked.

And on that question, the same thing happens in the UK, Alll the providers
lock their phones, and none of them will unlock them. But, there are plenty
of other companies who WILL unlock other providers phones, usually for some
nominal fee like 10 or 15 pounds. So don't all complain that Vodafone /
T-Mobile or whoever won't unlock your phone - it'd be silly business for
them to do so. Just go and find someone else who will. And if it's any
help I got mine done in the UK over the phone. Rang them up, gave them my
credit card number for the 10 pounds, told them the IMEI number or whatever
the phone registration code thing is called, they tapped it into some
computer, 1 minute later I had the 'unlock' code. The next time I tried
another providers' SIM the screen displayed 'please enter your unlock code'.
Simple. Try searching the net for a place near you that will do this.

As to Wi-Fi in NZ, it's uncommon because internet and phone usage is e x p e
n s i v e! I am astounded that NZer's are supposed to be amongst the
highest users of the internet worldwide when it costs so much to get a poor
service and barely any NZ companies have a website of any note. Anyway,
that's a different topic. The point is that if you want any Wi Fi in NZ
you're going to have to look hard. If you want it for free you've got even
less chance. If you want to sniff for it and you think this is "just
visiting" because your "perception is the world should be like the US", have
a great time here in NZ perpetuating the tales that Yanks are all ignorant
and self-important, because that's exactly what that attitude reflects.

Dave

P.S. Happy New Year everyone! :-)

$ 499 was the lowest I've ever seen a fare on AirNZ or Quantas in the entire 6 yrs I've been here. That's not a std fare back home at all (although I'm hoping AirNZ causes it to be every Sept/Oct.

What you are seeing now on the AirNZ site is pretty much std fares for off peak season - i.e for heading home during fall!

Actually I switched from Verizon (after 5 yrs with them) to T-mobile using one of the new Smartphones powered by Microsoft's new smartphone software and have been nothing but impressed with T-Mobile both on the support side (yes imagine that a cell phone company with online technicians and support that actually know what they are talking about).

Coverage can be an issue for any company - look closely into it before purchasing from a provider. And DEAD BATTERIES??? Have you heard of this thing they call a charger??? :) All kidding aside dead batteries are the issue of the phone manufacturer NOT the network provider.

For those that say tmobile far supercedes verizon, do you travel nationally within the States?

Hubby and I did a bit of research when looking to get our phones, and for his travelling needs verizon by far outweighs tmobile in the coverage stakes, though i have to agree their actual pricing/packaging is much more user friendly. as for service.. well we havent had much go wrong to have tested verizons customer service. But Im picking, as with any multi national company, so branches are going to be so helpful they fall over themselves to lend assistance, wehre as others couldnt give a rats ass... so everyone experiences of evey company are going to be pretty varied.

Hello everyone,
I hope you all had a great Christmas. I just have a quick question.
My fiancee posted in her biography and that to start the process for
our K-1 visa about Dec 5th. now looking at the U.S.C.I.S processing
table for our area. they are only processing July 21st 2003 now. My
Fiancee is worried that it will be about 6 mths till we get the
paperwork starting to come thru. We have aimed at me being there
around late March early April. I know it is out of my hands to get it
any quicker and we are at the mercy of Immigration. When looking thru
all the infomation we were under the impression that it would take
120 days max. Im itching to book flights because they are so cheep
for April $1149 one way to L.A. and thats NZD!!!! Can anybody give me
any reassurance that it wont be 6 mths

Hey Shane,

Which of the INS offices is your fiancée dealing with? I think that may
make a difference as to how long it takes to process. My husband and I
live in Virginia and our K1 stuff was processed through the Vermont
office. We sent it in around May 25 and the approved petition was in the
mail waiting for us when we returned from our summer vacation on July
20. So I would estimate that part of the process will take you 2 months.

I cannot stress enough the importance of double and triple checking that
you have all the paperwork they need, and ensuring you have filled out
application forms correctly.

When your fiancée receives the approved petition you will receive stuff
in the mail from the Auckland consulate. Once you have all the paperwork
needed for the interview, you will be able to make an appointment to
have an interview at the Auckland consulate. I was given an interview
date two weeks after I phoned up. As long as you have all the paperwork
the Auckland consulate wants to see, and you have evidence of your
relationship you will be issued a K1 visa that very day. So I would say
that April is a very reasonable estimate of when you would be able to
go.

Just make sure you have all the paperwork you need. The paperwork is all
they go on. They don't really care about asking you many questions. They
want to SEE the evidence. Have more than you think you will need, and
you'll be fine. If you need to get police clearances from other
countries you have lived in, do it now. I had to wait ages for a police
clearance from Great Britain and it slowed the whole thing down.

All the best!!! I hope you are not missing your fiancée too much! My now
husband and I were only ever apart for 2 1/2 months and that was bad
enough.
Melissa

Look on the bright side. One INS office solved it's backlog - by
shredding hundreds of applications, including original documents.

"...This week the manager was charged with illegally shredding as

I found the auckland office to be quick if you can do everything there as it was said make sure you have the paper work in order the order they say is not a joke.  The only thing I had missing was my nz police report which they send direct to consulate so you have to assume it was there mine was not I had to call and they sent it again but you can could the police commission before and make sure it is there..  Make sure paper in right order and photos no earrings they mean it especially now after sept 11th they are getting really up tight about everything good luck fingers crossed
