Sure, if you're spending a currency other than pounds!  But when you're earning pounds it's not that much more expensive than NZ - some things even cheaper ie. groceries and booze.  Besides, America is something else, that's why we all love to holiday/live there - everything's so cheap!!

I wouldn't overlook the dollar store for souvenirs etc.
BTW, I was shocked when I went to the UK - everything that costs $1 here
costs about ?1 there. ?5 for a roll of film - yikes. And batteries were
pricey too.

One thing about not including replies is that it makes it difficult to work out which email someone is replying to, and when there's 20-odd email on the one topic it can get a little confusing.  If you're going to delete the bulk of the email how about just leaving the bit that you're replying to?  Makes it a lot easier to work out what someone means when you get an email saying "yeah, the pink ones" [no offence, just an example]. :-)

Yeah, and never mind getting boring old Dallas Cowboys or Oakland A's which
all kiwi's with baseball caps have - get something obscure like the
Mississippi Mudsliders or Tennessee Tarcats . . .

If you know the pink ones, you'll know what I mean. If not - its REALLY hard
to explain. Basically they are the wafer part from ice wafer cookies, but
pink (always) and about 2" by 5", and no icing! It's the only way to eat an
ice cream sandwich - trust me.

Do you remember 'Eskimo Pies'? A slice of ice-cream about the same size as
we used to put between the pink wafers but with a thin layer of chocolate
around instead, and all individually pre-packaged - yummm!

In the USA though I guess they'd have to be called 'Maori pies' hahahahahaha

In fact, especially as we mostly had them in the hot summer, how come the
ones in the pink wafers weren't called 'Pakeha Pies'? ;-)

Come on enough of the food talk already .... not only is it a task wading
through the constant stream of emails over the past few days but the talk of
food makes me hungry as well for good old New Zealand treats.

I have enjoyed this list for what appropriate information it provides to the
group but sometimes these conversations get dragged out a little too much. Can
the replies just be personalized to the person asking the question as opposed to
the entire group (PLEASE!)

Thanks a ton

Yes, but then I also remember the long, square chocolate covered ice cream
bars you got at the movies that had a strip to pull them up as you ate them.
I also remember the square ice cream cups and bars, and the whipped ice
cream, which has been 'rediscovered' over here, that came from dispensers
into a double cone! (Can't remember the name of the company that sold it
though).

We finally get some list traffic and you want it to STOP! Are you mad?? At
least eGroups won't shut us down, now!
Besides, reminiscing ain't all bad, eh? No-one quite believes that I used to

Why don't you just use the delete key according to subject line . Its what
I've done , and works great , also allows those who want to follow the
conversation without posting , to do so.

reason for this mailing list? At least this mailing list has become alive

of interest other times not, its a choice thing as whether you choose to

When I was VERY young, the milk was delivered door to door on a sort of flat
wagon, called a milk float, drawn by a horse. The horses were quite smart,
they would stop at the right places and then go on to the next stop.
The milk was stored in urns, sort of like the things that Houdini might have
escaped from. I went out with something like a paint can with a close
fitting lid, called a billy, still in use for boilng water for tea over an
open fire, and a penny or two, and the milk would be measured out with a
measure dipped into the urn, then poured into the 'billy'. Then I would go
back in trying not to drop the milk - hence the saying about 'spilled milk'.
Even when the milk was in bottles, we still kept the horses, and the
'milkies' (delivery men) would run at full tilt from float to house and back
getting the empty bottles and delivering the full ones. The horses, who were
a source of delight (and manure for the roses) are long gone now, of course.
The milkie has to drive his truck and deliver the milk. Too bad they
couldn't teach the horses to drive!

Hmm. I seem to remember paua covered kiwis with clocks in their
bellies. I also remember a plastic molded figure of the heads of two
Polynesians' kissing, (male & female - none of that here) with a 60 watt
light bulb behind it (I worked for a company that made those - apparently
they sold well in the islands <G>).

It's a little cheaper, CAD 0.6836 = NZD 1.000 so NZ$38 = CAN$25.98
