There is no way that loud and lousy bands blaring amplifed noise from
the outside of O'Brien's every day contribute anything pleasant to Newport
or have a positive impact for anyone who isn't among the club's owners..
The phony compromise voted by the City Council Wednesday night was an
outrage that totally ignored the wishes of the people who live in the
neighborhood and their rights to privacy and the protection of their
property.
A hint of what that vote portends followed the Council meeting when
five Council members reportedly attended and were treated to a celebratory
dinner at another restaurant.
Even if the current members of the Council do not seek reelection or
are thrown out of office in 2004, they should not be allowed to leave a
legacy of neighborhood destruction behind.
Fourth ward residents should demand that the Council rescind its vote on
second reading.
Richard Sardella, John Trifero and Jeanne Marie Napolitano are all
elected by the city at large. They cannot claim that they represent wards
that are unaffected by the vote.
. Together with Kate Leonard, who voted against the O'Brien request, the
three at large members would constitute a majority. Residents should be
letting them know NOW that they must change their votes.
Selfish interests must not be allowed to destroy our city, our
streets and our neighborhoods.
