Van Zandt Pier
There is no doubt the underpinnings are in bad shape. Anyone looking at the
pier at low tide must wonder what holds it up.
I have found a memorandum from Friends of the Waterfront to the Point
Association dated 02/14/05 including this:-
"In March 1996, Beth and Mike Cullen in response to Councilwoman Laurie
Shaw's request for volunteers, formed Friends of Van Zandt Pier. After a
series of fundraisers, a June tag sale at Battery Park, a sail on the
Aurora, FVZP volunteers raised $5000 with which they purchased supplies and
made some necessary repairs and painted the pier in September. Planters and
a trash receptacle were donated for the head of the pier.
"Over recent years, some additional repairs have been done, but the major
renovation has been put on the "back burner" because of the high cost.
During every election campaign, candidates promised to find funds, but there
has been no follow through."
So is the pier to rot away?
