Issues and Concerns for Jim Dias - council candidate   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #2456 of 6050 |
Dear Jim,
In your campaign ad this week you listed Taxes, Sewers and Beach as
"primary issues and concerns." Perhaps you could expand on them:
Taxes -- Newport's real estate taxes are among the lowest in the
state. Are you saying you will vote against any increase in these taxes?
If that is your position, will you say how you propose to meet the
rising costs of municipal services, including salaries and benefits?
Sewer -- How will Newport's sewer problems be solved by further
studies and payments by Middletown? Will studies stop the pollution?
Will payments by Middletown affect the amount of sewage from that
community? What do you propose to do about the pollution of our beaches
and harbor?
Beach -- In expanding revenue from Easton's Beach are you suggesting
that fees residents pay for bathhouses and parking be increased?

Your candidacy for the City Council is welcomed, but I hope it will
be accompanied by concrete proposals to deal with "issues and concerns"
that we all share rather than more mumble jumble.

Burt Hoffman

I guess I have a very warped view of the world, but it seems reasonable to me that a house valued at $1 million should be paying more taxes than a house valued...

It seems to me, if you have property taxes, you have to scale the tax to the market value of the home. Some communities have tried variations, like freezing...
