Dear Group,
I am sure many of you are happy that the marina idea, truly only
held by certain members of the Waterfront Commission, has died a
rather deserved ignomanious death.
Some of you would not have minded the Sail Newport idea. As a
supporter of Sail Newport, if I can help them in either Middletown,
or Tiverton where I still have some influence - I was a candidate
for State Rep. there - and still have friends on the Council, I will.
Most importantly, it is time for all folks and get together and
figure out a low impact use for storer park that fits the goals of
the original intentions and conveyance. To think that in this No
Child Left Behind era, in combination with a Republican
Administration that underfunds everything, Storer Park is safe for
good would be naive at best.
I hate to say I told you so, however . . . .
Check my post after the original Harbor Hotel vote. I said in
testimony and here that it would come back. My understanding is
that Storer Park will be back on the table inside of 90 days.
If the Point Association, and more importantly, the folks in it,
truly care, then now is the time to be proactive. Hopefully, the
neighborhood can come up with something low impact enough that a
consensus can be built. Those that do not live directly on the
Point should be at the ready to help out our Point neighbors if they
reach out to us. This is how coalitions are built, compromise
becomes the order of the day, and all our citizens benefit. Those
who hold out to some silly obstructionist reactive belief will find
themselves angry once again.
Take Care
Bobby Oliveira
