Regarding city financed health insurance for employees, which I favor,
did I read correctly several weeks ago that members of the city council
receive health insurance from the city?
If they do, there's a chance to save a few thousand bucks.
I don't see why the public should be paying health insurance for folks
who are eligible for health insurance from their jobs or retirement
arrangements.

It's my understanding that certain members of the council are receiving health
insurance from the city. I don't know the total cost; however, a look at the FY
04 budget request shows a "Fringe Benefits" line item (health and life
insurance) of $31,700 up from $18,900 in FY 01. The FY 04 council portion of the
budget can be viewed at http://www.cityofnewport.com/budgetfy04/Council.pdf
