Is anyone interested in trying this mechanism to overturn City Council
votes?
My preference would be to take a shot at an outdoor entertainment ordinance
-- O'Briens or Riptide.
Ten percent of the registered voters on a petition does not appear to be a
huge hurdle
Success would galvanize voter participation, which is what Newport needs,
particularly as we approach the elections of 2004 when we have a chance to
change the Council significantly.
Whether overriding a Council vote or changing the Council, a sense of
outrage is necessary. That's what draws voters.
Are there enough outraged voters who live in the affected area to make a
petition drive successful?
