The short fall of $600,000 is just the tip of the iceberg. The city
of Newport is being over taken by unions leaders who only think of themselves.
Maybe it is time to reduce the work forces of all these union to the level of
what we can afford because of the greed. With over 90% of the budgets of
police, fire, city and teachers unions being salaries and benefits there is no
room for any other expenses. The city manager did suggest an open meeting where
the public would have some input. I believe the city manager should just
publicize what the union benefits are costing the taxpayer. This would open up
the eyes of the citizens of Newport when they compare what their benefits
packages
are. This is better than the school dept. and school committee who continue
to meet in closed session. I believe they have the same problem with the
benefit package and really don't want the world to know.
