Υεια σας,

Thoughts and prayers to all friends and family, near and far, who were affected by the earthquake near Port Patras on  Sunday.   As of today's newspaper report, 2 people have died.  Many will need to completely rebuild their lives.

Patras is at the uppermost tip of the Peloponnese on the western side.  Our newspaper also reported that the 6.5 magnitude quake was Greece's first fatal earthquake since 1999.

If anyone has further information, I would very much like to hear about it.

Hello everyone,

The article "Flowing in the bowels" is interesting.  This article is funny, but I have heard many Greek-Americans say similar things (similar to the things that the minister and the students said).  Maybe it is just pride in their language or heritage.  Either way, the evolution of languages is what makes them interesting.
However, I am not as certain as the author is that these prevailing beliefs are easy to disprove.  If they were, then they wouldn't persist.
I don't know if these "urban legends" are true or not, but just because they are urban legends doesn't mean they are false!  Thanks for the read!

1) Hellenic Quest - Wikipedia

Hellenic Quest refers to an urban legend that circulated around Greek websites[1] and was widely reproduced without prior verification by any source. According to the "Hellenic Quest" story, CNN has reported that Apple Computer is supposedly developing a software product for teaching the Ancient Greek language to foreigners and scientists, in the light of the upcoming development of supercomputers that will use Ancient Greek as their programming interface, due to this language's superior logical structure. (This prediction often attributed by the hoax writer to Bill Gates.) A prototype computer that is allegedly under development as part of this project is called "Ibycus".

The text contains a number of factual errors, unproved assertions and exaggerations. The origin of this hoax is not clear. The author probably uses CNN and Apple Computer as a means to give more credibility to the story. The story is sometimes enhanced with linguistic-sounding arguments. It also has several obscure references to what seems to be the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae project, a project undertaken by University of California, Irvine, which aims to digitize all ancient and medieval Greek texts, with some of the story's context seems to be based on a misquotation of the Introduction to the TLG Project. Furthermore, the supposed computer prototype "Ibycus", is just an old HP 1000, that was used in the 80's to search and browse TLG texts, represented in beta code.

The Ancient Greek language (or any other language) has nothing to do with the binary logic that forms the basis of computers' function. Even advanced concepts in computation, such as fuzzy logic, knowledge-based systems and quantum computation have absolutely no use whatsoever for the extreme expressiveness of any of the world's languages anyway, "rich and powerful" as they may be characterized ; the notions understood by computers are very basic.

Urban legend spread

On January 27, 2008, the Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs of Greece, Evripidis Stylianidis, reproduced the hoax in his opening speech for the finals of the annual student debate competition, in an attempt to praise the Greek language superiority. The event took place at the old Greek parliament and it was subject of criticism by the press

4) Museum of Hoaxes

"Apple Promotes Ancient Greek...."

Here's an odd hoax, brought to my attention by Patrick Georges who lives up the road from me in Carlsbad. It appears that a message has been circulating amongst the Greek community, suggesting that Apple Computer has created a program to teach Ancient Greek online. This program will be hosted by CNN on a page titled Hellenic Quest. The text of this message can be read at the GrecoReport website. The supposed logic behind this move is that learning Ancient Greek promotes creativity and Apple is all about promoting creativity because creative people use Apple Computers. Might be true. I took a couple years of Ancient Greek in high school, and here I am, years later, using an Apple Computer. I never thought the two were related, but now I see that they must be.

Hello everyone,
My name is Mike and I just wanted to say hello (or Gia sou!). I'm 24, I'm from Glasgow in Scotland and can't wait to begin learning Greek. I used to do Latin in high school and also Spanish and French at university so hopefully all of those will steer me in the right direction for learning Greek.

As with many Brits, I go to Greece often on holiday and I have fallen in love with this language so am now determined to learn it. I find it fascinating how the Greek language and customs have survived for so long and almost totally independently of the languages, cultures and countries surrounding it.

I have a question about Greek pop music. Whenever I go on holiday or learn a language, I always like to listen to the current music and would like to hear some Greek music. My question is, which of the music compilations would let me hear the contemporary Greek pop music that is currently in the charts. I have found four different compilations so far: Minos, Thalassa, Kalokairi and Kolokasi. Which of these would let me hear the Greek music in the charts? Or do they all do these for artists on different record labels? Any advice that could be given on this would be much appreciated.

I know she is an older singer, but of the little Greek music I have heard so far, my favourite singer is Sofia Arvaniti. I first heard her when I recieved a copy of a duet she did with Bonnie Tyler called The Desert Is In Your Heart. I absolutely loved her voice and although it took me almost ten years, I was very lucky to get some of her albums while I was on holiday in Crete last year. My favourite songs are (sorry that this isn't written in Greek) Zoi san portokali, Min Tis to Pis (with Kostas Tournas), Mplexthika and Eine Pou Thelo Na Perno. I can't wait to hear more of her music and I really hope to be able to see her live one day.

Well, that's enough of an introduction. I can't wait to begin learning Greek and I hope to chat with some of you soon (hopefully in Greek next time).

Take care

Mike

May I apologize to all members of this list for being a bit tardy in
removing undesirable members from our group.

I am in the process of moving our group to a web site, where we can
avoid this kind of stuff. However, this process is taking me a lot
longer than I thought it would take, and I still do not have a date as

Please look over the membership list for our group, and let me know if
there is anyone else who should be removed.

One way to minimize the spam is to change membership to "restricted" (in order to join, a person has to get approval from owner by saying why they want to join group or what their interest in Greek is).
To do this, the owner can go to Management -> Group Settings -> membership
and change type to "Restricted" (you approve all requests for membership).
Previous spam messages can be deleted from the message list.

Thanks, the spam is annoying.

In the meantime, please delete the spam. As moderator of the group,
all you have to do is go to each one and hit "delete". And yes, if
you change the group's status so that new members must be approved,
you won't have a problem with junk mail. You might even require
future members to state WHY they want to join. (I had to do that in
order to join other groups.) Finally, regarding which members should
be removed -- just look at the nature of their messages. Anything
that is totally irrelevant to our purpose, anything related to
sex/dating/come see my profile/etc... Frankly, if the message isn't
obviously related to the Greek language and is not stated clearly in
the subject line, it should not be permitted unless the sender
includes "OT" (off-topic) in the subject line. Additionally, you
could do a roll call, meaning, post a message asking all members who
are interested in continuing in this group to post a message simply
saying that they are indeed present and wish to continue. After a
week (or whatever time span you designate), anyone who hasn't
responded will be removed from the list. Give it a try.

Dear friends of Greek language,

after all this spamming, i'd like to post a message regarding Greek
culture and language. Having a long distance relationship with a Greek
woman since years, i'm talking to her every day on the phone and
travelling to Greece quite often. Of course i try to learn Greek, it's
wonderful to learn a language directly by talking to native speakers.

Recently the sister of my Greek girlfriend gave me this address:
http://www.greek-movies.com/news.html
where you can watch Greek news, movies, tv series, shows etc. online.

Don't know if this webaddress has alreday been posted long time ago.
Sorry if it's a repost.

I'm betting you made your email in Yahoo's webmail interface. It doesn't
handle international characters well. Use an email address that allows you to
use a mail client and it'll send the Greek characters in a way that everyone
can read them.

Hi Constantinos,

i made my post directly from the Yahoo Group page. Now i found at the

So let's see if it will show the subject of my first post correctly:

Have to learn more about this...

As i read the message on the board, the characters written by me are
displayed wrong again. The funny thing is, that now, as i posted some

message was posted in Greek.

To see what i mean, please have a look at "Photos" on our groups page.
There you can find a screenshot, how i was having the message on the

Oh well....

Manfred,
I was able to read all the Greek portions of your post correctly, without putting the text into Greek encoding.  However, the photo that was posted did post as gibberish on my computer.  Usually, when an email looks like crazy gibberish, if you are using Internet Explorer, at the bottom of the email, you can change the encoding to Greek for Windows.  In older versions, just right click anywhere in the body of the email, then click "encoding" from the pull-down menu, then select Greek (ISO) or Greek(for Windows).  The text will then appear in the proper Greek fonts for you to read.

You can send Greek characters from the Yahoo Group interface.  But you need to remember to scroll down below the text message area.  There you will find a drop down list labeled, “What language is this post in?”

but does doing so mean that you can't use 2 languages in one post? because it

Hi Manfred,
I have a couple of files posted in the group's file section pertaing to
Greek characters. Please, if you haven't already done so, check them out.
If they do not help, and something else needs to be added to the files, let
me know so I may edit them for others.

Hi Constantinos,

i made my post directly from the Yahoo Group page. Now i found at the
bottom of the page "Post message" the possibility to select "What
language is this post in?" and now selected Greek to test.

So let's see if it will show the subject of my first post correctly:

Ελληνικές
ταινίες,
τηλεοπτικές
σειρές,
εκπομπές και
μουσική

Kaiti Scarlett - unfortunately i can't read the Greek characters in
your message too. Looks like:
        .
        - ,
 , :)
.

Hmm. I have installed Greek fonts on my computer, can read Greek
webpages without technical problems and also see about the half of the
messages in this group correct.

Have to learn more about this...

Kind regards,
Manfred

Kimberly,

The English will stay as English, and you can have both English and Greek in the same post.

I don’t know about trying to put Chinese and Greek together, never tried that.

I rarely use the Yahoo group interface to send a message.  This message here is coming to you

from Outlook.  Even when I want to start a new thread, I take an old message, change the subject

line and contents, and send it to LearnModernGreek@yahoogroups.com.

Υεια σου.

but does doing so mean that you can't use 2 languages in one post? because it would turn one of them to gibberish?

Hello everyone,

Thanks Manfred for the link to the Greek movies.  I have been meaning to ask you guys what Greek movies you have seen or you like.

I have only seen a few.  Several years ago I bought a movie called "I Love You" in order to help me learn Greek.  I listen to the conversations and read the subtitles, hopefully to learn to speak better.  This film is from 1969, and it seems very dated and silly.  Unfortunately this is the only Greek movie I have, so I watch it over and over.
One film that I like a lot is call "From the Edge of the City".  It tells the story of a group of young immigrants living in Athens who survive by living an underground life of prostitution and drugs.  It's well done.

At the greek-movies.com site I just watched "Save Me".  It's about a woman struggling against the pressures of modern life.  I liked it, but it doesn't have subtitles, so I could understand only a little of it.  I recommend it.

How about the rest of you?  Which Greek movies do you like?

Καλήμερα όλους,

I am not going to try to put this in Greek, it would take me days! Someday it will be different but...

About movies, one that you  might enjoy is an oldie, 'Never on Sunday'  you can have English Subtitles or Greek.  About 1/2 the movie is in English. I enjoyed it a lot.  Also another one that I really like is 'ΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΗ Κουζίνα' it is mostly in Greek with some Turkish but has good English Subtitles but could understand it without the Subtitles most of the time.  it is by Village Films.

It is difficult to find Greek films subtitled, even for the hard of hearing. But I keep looking.  I would like to find one of their silly serials with subtitles, either Greek or English :)

και εγω! I need to practice but can't seem to find the time to do more than study the basics.... watched a movie that was part in German last night and was able to understand much of the subtitles, so am proud of myself.   Another movie I would recommend is Brides, it has Greek and English, been awhile since I watched it but it was great.

It's been a while since I've shopped for Greek dvd's. When I did, I
found:

, an Aesop Fable, is a children's dvd with
subtitles. I found it at Greekmusic.com. They have other children's
dvd with subtitles.

Also found Mikis Theodorakis interviews (he wrote the music for Zorba
the Greek)with Greek subtitles at Info-Grece.com. They had 20,000
Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days.

I'm lost on the children's videos still. They are fun to watch even if
it will take a while to be able to follow them.

I chose Greek for the question: What language is this post in?
We will see what happens!

Hi everyone,

I was reading an article about "intuition" and it mentions the connection between language-learning and sides of the brain.  Although it's not the case with this article, this idea often leads people to imply a connection between language and left-handedness.  I don't really believe it, but I have to admit I am both interested in languages and left-handed.  Several people I know who are most interested in language are also left-handed, so I wonder if there is some truth to it.  I'm curious how many people in this group are left-handed, and if it's more than the typical 10% of the population.  Are you left-handed or right-handed?

myself, am not sure what to make of it. Perhaps some of you can post
your thoughts about the riots and enlighten my as to the real causes
of the riots.

So far the best English articles about this I have found are at:

If you know of other good articles, (besides, American news media)
please let me know.

I guess from what I heard was the riots started because the Athens Police shot and killed a 15 year old. boy. The boy was from a poor family but the family was really well known.
