It is one year today since Israel launched its war-crime ridden assault on the people of Gaza.
Join the silent candlelit vigil tomorrow, Monday 28th December, at the Clocktower, Leicester city centre from 2pm-3pm to mark this shameful anniversary and for an end to the blockade.

Friends,
2009 years after the birth of Jesus in the town of Bethlehem, this is not what you expect on Christmas:
Top Ten Brands to Boycott this Christmas & all year
Posted by Right Of Return Coalition on Thu, 12/03/2009 - 13:05
USCBI (U.S. Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel)
While there are many Israeli and multinational companies that benefit from apartheid, we put together this list to highlight ten specific companies to target.
Many of these produce goods in such a way that directly harms Palestinians — exploiting labor, developing technology for military operations, or supplying equipment for illegal settlements. Many are also the targets of boycotts for other reasons, like harming the environment and labor violations.
1. AHAVA
This brand’s cosmetics are produced using salt, minerals, and mud from the Dead Sea — natural resources that are excavated from the occupied West Bank . The products themselves are manufactured in the illegal Israeli settlement Mitzpe Shalem. AHAVA is the target of CODEPINK’s “Stolen Beauty” campaign.
2. Delta Galil Industries
Israel’s largest textiles manufacturer provides clothing and underwear for such popular brands as Gap, J-Crew, J.C. Penny, Calvin Klein, Playtex, Victoria’s Secret (see #10) and many others. Its founder and chairman Dov Lautman is a close associate of former Israeli President Ehud Barak. It has also been condemned by Sweatshop Watch for its exploitation of labor in other countries such as Egypt , Jordan , and Turkey .
3. Motorola
While many of us know this brand for its stylish cellphones, did you know that it also develops and manufactures bomb fuses and missile guidance systems? Motorola components are also used in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or “drones”) and in communications and surveillance systems used in settlements, checkpoints, and along the 490 mile apartheid wall. The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation has launched the “Hang Up on Motorola” campaign.
4. L’Oreal / The Body Shop
This cosmetics and perfume company is known for its investments and manufacturing activities in Israel, including production in Migdal Haemek, the “Silicon Valley” of Israel built on the land of Palestinian village Al-Mujaydil, which was ethnically cleansed in 1948. In 1998, a representative of L’Oreal was given the Jubilee Award by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for strengthening the Israeli economy.
5. Dorot Garlic and Herbs
These frozen herbs that are sold at Trader Joe’s are shipped halfway around the world when they could easily be purchased locally. Trader Joe’s also sells Israeli Cous Cous and Pastures of Eden feta cheese that are made in Israel . QUIT, South Bay Mobilization, and other groups have targeted Trader Joe’s with a “Don’t Buy into Apartheid” campaign.
6. Estee Lauder
This company’s chairman Ronald Lauder is also the chairman of the Jewish National Fund, a quasi-governmental organization that was established in 1901 to acquire Palestinian land and is connected to the continued building of illegal settlements. Estee Lauder’s popular brands include Clinique, MAC, Origins, Bumble & Bumble, Aveda, fragrance lines for top designers, and many others. They have been the target of QUIT’s “Estee Slaughter Killer Products” campaign.
7. Intel
This technology company that manufactures computer processors and other hardware components employs thousands of Israelis and has exports from Israel totaling over $1 billion per year. They are one of Israel ’s oldest foreign supporters, having established their first development center outside of the US in 1974 in Haifa . Al-Awda (the Palestinian Right to Return Coalition) has urged action against Intel for building a facility on the land of former village Iraq Al Manshiya, which was cleansed in 1949.
8. Sabra
This brand of hummus, baba ghanoush and other foods is co-owned by Israel ’s second-largest food company The Strauss Group and Pepsico. On the “Corporate Responsibility” section of its website, The Strauss Group boasts of its relationship to the Israeli Army, offering food products and political support.
9. Sara Lee
Sara Lee holds a 30% stake in Delta Galil (see #2) and is the world’s largest clothing manufacturer, which owns or is affiliated with such brands as Hanes, Playtex, Champion, Leggs, Sara Lee Bakery, Ball Park hotdogs, Wonderbra, and many others. Similar to L’Oreal (see #4), a representative of Sara Lee received the Jubilee Award from Netanyahu for its commitment to business with Israel .
10. Victoria’s Secret
Most of Victoria ’s Secret’s bras are produced by Delta Galil (see #2), and much of the cotton is also grown in Israel on confiscated Palestinian land. Victoria ’s Secret has also been the target of labor rights’ groups for sourcing products from companies with labor violations, and by environmental groups for their unsustainable use of paper in producing their catalogues. That’s not sexy!
Remember, it’s also important to let these companies — and the stores that sell them — know that we will not support them as long as they support Israeli apartheid!

Subject: URGENT ACTION: Following arrest warrant for Tipi Livni, British government 'urgently' looking at changing the law - CONTACT YOUR MP NOW!
Please act now! Contact your MP!
Following the news that Tipi Livni, who served as Foreign Minister in the Israeli government that planned and executed Israel’s brutal bombing and massacre in Gaza, faced arrest if she entered Britain, tell the government there must be no impunity for Israeli war criminals.
Please act URGENTLY – if possible e-mail your MP today, and come to the vigil on 27 December to show the government that we will not let them forget Gaza.
2. Urgently contact the Foreign Office raising the following points:
·The government has a duty under the Fourth Geneva Convention to ‘seek out and prosecute’ alleged war criminals. Under the Geneva Conventions Act 1957, the UK has universal jurisdiction to arrest and try suspected perpetrators of “grave breaches” of the Fourth Geneva Convention 1949 (IVCG). War criminals should be pursued – Britain must not become a ‘safe haven’.
·The judicial system is meant to be independent and the government’s role is not to intervene. If a judge believes there is sufficient evidence for an arrest warrant to be granted, it is irrelevant whether this embarrasses or causes problems for the British government.
·The Goldstone Report detailed war crimes and potential crimes against humanity committed by Israel in Gaza. It was shameful that the government abstained on the vote for the Report at the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly.
·Instead of responding to pressure from the Israeli government to end the right to charge and prosecute war criminals, the government should immediately change its position – it should support international law and justice, and act itself to uphold the Fourth Geneva Convention.
·Britain cannot be a true and independent ‘partner’ for peace if its policies are one-sided, and it allows those responsible for war crimes against Palestinians to avoid justice.
·Tzipi Livni is just the latest in a list of Israelis who have come under scrutiny over allegations of war crimes. Our government should reflect on this, and change its foreign policy, including ending its arms trade with Israel.
**********************
Betty Hunter, PSC General Secretary, letter in the Guardian today
‘Tzipi Livni's refusal to enter Britain because she fears arrest on war crimes charges increases the number of Israeli ministers and ex-ministers who fear legal action, and is to be welcomed (British court issued Gaza arrest warrant, 15 December). Richard Goldstone's report for the UN detailed serious war crimes and potential crimes against humanity carried out by the Israeli government in Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009. It urged international governments to take action to bring those responsible to justice. It is now almost a year since the Israeli government started its brutal and bloody Operation Cast Lead, killing over 1,400 Palestinians in Gaza. The British government has already acted shamefully by not voting for the Goldstone report at the UN.
We are shocked at reports that the Foreign Office is seeking to avoid its responsibility to uphold international law and bring war criminals to justice. The statement that Israeli leaders must be able to come to Britain and that the Foreign Office is "looking urgently at the implications of this case" implies meddling with due judicial process. The government should rectify this immediately, reaffirm the principles of international law and justice, and take action itself to ensure those responsible for war crimes are brought to justice. And if the government does not act, we are ready and willing to take action.
Foreign Secretary David Miliband says Israel is a "close friend" and wanted to "avoid this sort of situation arising again", and Foreign Office Minister Ivan Lewis MP said: ‘This can never happen again’:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/8415161.stm

Mark Regev was interviewed by Sarah Montague
Tzipi Livni is the daughter of a member of the Irgun Jewish Terrorist Group, responsible with other Terrorist Groups for the deaths of more British soldiers than were lost in the Falklands Campaign.
She was in power at the time of the Attachs on Gaza during which the most hideous weapons and bombs were used against a cilvil population.
Be in no doubt in expressing your concern that Israel is a terrorist State and the British Law is there to bring to justice those who act in a similar way to the Nazi Regime in the last war.

Small documentary with big message premieres tonight
Budrus, a documentary about the village of the same name, will have its world premiere tonight at 7pm at the Madinat Arena.
Because of the film's content, the screening will be followed by The Cultural Bridge Panel, with speakers from cinema, science and media sharing their insights on the world's diverse cultures and perspectives.
Headed by Queen Noor, other speakers include producer Mike Medavoy, Rebecca Sax, who is a professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the director, producer and writer of Budrus, Julia Bacha.
"I am incredibly excited about the premiere tonight. It's an honour to be told that the documentary we submitted will become a gala event," Bacha tells Emirates Business.
Bacha is a New York-based Brazilian filmmaker who has been involved for a while with Just Vision, a non-profit entity that informs local and international audiences about under-documented Palestinian and Israeli civilian efforts to resolve the conflict non-violently.
By creating and distributing films, multi-media and educational tools, it seeks to encourage civic participation in grassroots peace building.
And that's how the idea of Budrus came about.
"It is not usual that people get to see there is a successful, non-violent resistance in Palestine, because mainstream media always wants to focus on showing the violence," she says.
"So we decided to do a documentary about a Palestinian community organiser, Ayed, who was attempting to save his village [Budrus] by uniting Palestinians and Israelis through a non-violent manner."
In the film, Ayed Morrar unites all Palestinian political factions and Israelis, and together, they wage a lengthy lunch-counter-sit-in-style unarmed struggle to save his village from destruction by Israel's Separation Barrier. But progress only becomes likely when his brave 15-year-old daughter Iltezam, launches a women's movement that moves to the front lines.
"Ayed succeeded in doing what many people believe to be impossible: he united all Palestinian factions, including Fatah and Hamas; he brought women to the heart of the struggle through the leadership of his daughter, Iltezam; and he encouraged hundreds of Israelis to cross into Palestinian territory for the first time and join a non-violent movement."
Throughout the film, not only does Bacha show the Morrars' journey, she also features individuals from the Israeli border police officers stationed in the village.
Naturally, filming the occupied land was immensely challenging for the director. "This documentary took a long time to complete. We started shooting in 2003 and only finished about six months ago," Bacha says.
"The things is, you don't know where you're going to be allowed to film, and considering some of our crew were Palestinian, they were only allowed in certain areas of the country.
But Bacha was adamant on showing everyone's perspective in the documentary.
"Like I said, mainstream media just shows the violence, and how Palestinians and Israelis are against each other, but what's interesting in this film is that we show that there are Israelis who are against the occupation of Palestinian land."
Last Updated: December 12. 2009 11:35PM Films from the Middle East can bring about change and help humanise the Arab-Israeli conflict, Queen Noor Al Hussein of Jordan said yesterday at the Dubai International Film Festival.
Queen Noor will deliver the keynote speech tonight after the world premiere of Budrus, a highly anticipated documentary.
“We are trying to find films that help to humanise primarily the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Queen Noor said in an exclusive interview with The National. “It’s very hard to find film makers who find and produce stories that help you look at things from outside. I really think they can have impact.”
Queen Noor is known for her humanitarian work across the Arab world, focusing on education, conservation, sustainable development, human rights and cross-cultural understanding.
She will be accompanied in a panel discussion after the film by the Hollywood producer Mike Medavoy and Rebecca Saxe, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor. The panel will put forward research to prove the impact of media and cinema in the conflict.
Queen Noor said Budrus was proof of the role that media can play. In the documentary, a Palestinian leader unites Fatah, Hamas and Israelis in an unarmed movement to save his village from destruction. Success eludes him until his 15-year-old daughter joins the fray.
The documentary was filmed over months of protests. It claims to have captured the efforts of individuals who take on rigid, violent, political, social divides to work collectively for peace.
“This film also provided us an opportunity to present some research that we have been undertaking, through an organisation of like-minded Muslim-Americans and others from the media,” Queen Noor said.
“We share a concern that not enough is done. This was causing us a lot of pain. Yet, there is a conviction that media can play a great role.”
Her foundation’s media and humanity programme attempts to bring to the fore films that talk about the conflict in the region with an open, outside perspective.
Queen Noor agreed that such films did not reach enough people and more needed to be done to help the films’ makers. “We will be discussing in our panel how we can take such films that tackle the most divisive problem of our times, the Israel-Palestine issue, beyond historical mindsets that exists in both these communities,” she said.
“We need to take that out of the theatre and extend it more broadly to the entire community.”
The panel discussion will be held tonight at 8.30pm at the Madinat Arena and is open to the public.

Friends and colleagues,
For those who are still not sure why and how this conflict started more than 60 years ago, confessions of Israeli leaders make it very clear. For those who already know, this video is a good tool to educate others.
As part of the national week of boycott Israel actions Leicester PSC is to leaflet at Sainsbury's, Melton Road, Leicester on this Friday (13th November) between 1pm - 3pm. Our member Susan has identified at least eleven products with Israel or 'West Bank' origins on sale there this week.
We will be handing out leaflets to shoppers as they go in.
We need your support in person if at all possible.
Please let me know by email or phone whether you will be there.
PS. Thanks to all who donated following the summer funds appeal. The branch now has money in the bank and will be able to undertake this sort of action without need to worry about cost!

Dear PSC Supporter
By now you will be only too well aware that a campaign has been launched to have
Tony Blair appointed as the first President of the EU Council of Ministers once
the Lisbon Treaty is ratified next week.
You know his record. He has long been a member of the Zionist leaning Labour
Friends of Israel. While Prime Minister of the UK he appointed his chief
fundraiser, the Zionist Harold Levy, as his personal adviser on the Middle East.
The position of the British Government on the Middle East during his tenure was
invariably sympathetic to Israel, failing to condemn the invasion of Lebanon or
even calling for a ceasefire as Israel launched attack after attack onto
virtually defenceless civilians.
Since stepping down he has been acting as the special envoy to the Middle East
of the Quartet, ostensibly to create the conditions for progress in the peace
process, but once again favouring Israel in all his dealings.
If appointed as the EU President he would be a disaster for the Palestinian
cause.
You can register your opposition to his possible appointment by signing two
petitions:

Jenny Linnell arrived in Gaza on 23rd August last year, on the first voyage of the Free Gaza Movement, then stayed on to work with the ISM until her return to the UK in July following her attempts to exit the strip being hampered by the Egyptian authorities. Her role with ISM Gaza Strip has involved documentation and reportage of human rights violations, whilst also supporting Palestinian non-violent resistance and engaging in accompaniment work. She also spent several months in Gaza in 2003, again as an ISM volunteer.
Fida and Jenny will speak about their experiences during Israel's massive assault on the Gaza strip in December and January. This talk will be given within the context ofthe lead-up to the offensive and the humanitarian crisis that followed in its wake, including the ongoing siege and how it is severely hampering reconstruction efforts. Israeli atrocities continue in Gaza despite the supposed 'ceasefire' and the shifting of the media spotlight. The accompaniment work of the ISM with Palestinian civilians routinely facing Israeli military aggression will also be outlined.
We are due to send out an information pack to universities for their upcoming freshers' events, containing information material including fact sheets, newsletters and leaflets for our Student Conference in October. If you have any student contacts at your branch, who will run a stall at their university and can distribute this material, please forward relevant contact details to psc.admin@...

Please find publicity from Amnesty International Leicester below.
Leicester Palestine Solidarity Campaign together with the Friends of al Aqsa and JustPeace is also hosting a meeting with these 2 speakers on 29th September at the Highfields Centre at 7.30pm, so if you can't make one of the meetings you could make the other.

Subject: PSC NEWS RELEASE - PSC WELCOMES AMNESTY’S DECISION OVER LEONARD COHEN CONCERT
PSC NEWS RELEASE
Wednesday 19 August 2009
PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN WELCOMES AMNESTY’S DECISION OVER LEONARD COHEN CONCERT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign welcomes Amnesty International (USA)’s decision to withdraw its plans to administer funds from a concert to be performed in Tel Aviv by Leonard Cohen.
Singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen has been asked to heed the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel and avoid complicity with Israel's violations of international law by cancelling his planned September concert in Israel. Pressure has grown internationally on performers, particularly following Israel’s war crimes in Gaza, to refuse to perform in Israel whilst it is violating international law and continuing its illegal occupation.
Betty Hunter, General Secretary of PSC, said: ‘The Palestinians have need of principled international friends and Amnesty has often filled that role.
The PSC were therefore shocked to hear about the proposed involvement of Amnesty in disbursing the profits of Leonard Cohen's concert to organisations such as the PeresCenter for Peace whose function is to normalise the illegal occupation.
‘The Palestinians have asked us internationally to put pressure on Israel to abide by international law. We are therefore very pleased that Amnesty has taken this principled decision.’
PSC would like to thank our members, and supporters of Palestinian rights worldwide, who have written and emailed Amnesty to raise their concerns.
An open letter to Amnesty signed by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), the Palestinian Campaign for an Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, (PACBI), Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East, American Jews for a Just Peace (US), Boycott from Within (Israel), British Committee for the Universities of Palestine (BRICUP), International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, Jews Against the Occupation-NYC, New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel (NYCBI), Palestine Solidarity Campaign (UK), US Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel. Organizations pointed out, ‘Amnesty International USA will serve as sponsor of a new fund that will whitewash the money raised at Cohen's concert in Israel by using it to finance programs for "peace."’
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) aims to raise public awareness about the occupation of Palestine and the struggle of the Palestinian people. PSC seek to bring pressure on both the British and Israeli government to bring their policies in line with international law. PSC is an independent, non-governmental and non-party political organisation with members from communities across the UK.

Israeli Dates: Background and Action
In 2004 the International Court of Justice ruled that the "Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, are illegal and an obstacle to peace and to economic and social development [... and] have been established in breach of international law." (International Court of Justice Ruling, July 9, 2004). They are built on stolen Palestinian land.
Growing dates is one of the major agricultural activities carried out by nearly half of the illegal Israeli settlements located in the JordanValley. It is their most profitable crop, and contributes significantly to their economic viability.
Picking the dates is back breaking work, so the Israeli settlers bring in Palestinian labourers. During the pruning season the workers are dropped onto the date palm trees by a hoisting crane at 5 o'clock in the morning, left perched on palms that soar to a height of ten or twelve metres — the height of a three- or four-storey building — and left there swaying in the wind for up to eight hours without a break and with no means to come down until the crane returns at the end of the day. The workers cling to the tree with one arm and work with the other. They cannot even take a break to go to the toilet. If they complain or fall behind their quota they will lose their jobs and their families will starve.
The Israelis also employ children, “even issuing them official work permits, as they are quick and light, can climb trees faster, work for less and it's easier to cheat and humiliate them. Out of desperate poverty Palestinian families are forced to take their children out of school and hand them over to the settlers to work for a pittance". (Source: Channel 4 news, 7 July 2008, and KavLaOved, http://www.kavlaoved.org.il/media-view_eng.asp?id=2327.)
Most of the Israeli date crop, up to 80%, is exported, mainly to Europe where it has around 10% market share. In 2005, dates were Israel's leading fruit export.
The two major Israeli companies involved are Agrexco and Hadi-klaim.
Agrexco, half owned by the Israeli government, handles 60-70% of all goods produced in the settlements. Its dates have the brand names Carmel, Jordan Plains and JordanValley. Last September, a week before the start of Ramadan, Carmel boasted in their press release that they had managed an early crop of dates in order to meet the Ramadan demand for dates from Europe's Muslims!
Hadi-klaim sells 65% of all the dates produced in Israel. Its dates have brand names King Solomon and Jordan River. They also supply Israeli dates to supermarkets and retail chains who market them under their own brand names. These include Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury, Tesco, and Waitrose.
Sometimes they are labelled "produced in the West Bank", but this just confirms they are grown in illegal Israeli settlements.
Peace activists who visited the Palestinian village of Fasayl in the JordanValley last year discovered that villagers are slowly being forced off their land by the Israeli army. The only livelihood left open to them is to work for Carmel Agrexco. The activists even spoke to two Palestinian workers whose land had been stolen and who were forced to work for Carmel in order to feed their families. “They had a message for the peace activists, a plea for anyone who would listen. They urged them to take action against Carmel Agrexco and such companies that support Israeli apartheid."
See www.zaytoun.org for where to buy fair trade Palestinian dates.
Boycott Israeli Medjoul dates and all products which are labelled ‘Made in Israel’ or ‘Made in West Bank’.
Write to or visit local stores (supermarkets or smaller shops), make the argument against Agrexco produce and raise awareness of what products and brand names to avoid.
Speak to your local mosque and Muslim organisations in your area and ask them not to buy Israeli medjoul dates to break the fast this Ramadan.
THIS RAMADAN, DON'T BREAK YOUR FAST WITH AN ISRAELI DATE
The branch meeting last night received a report from the Treasurer, Susan Skyrme, saying that we have ony about £70 in the kitty. This is the lowest it has been for some years.
The shortage of money meant that we had to ask ourselves if we could afford to undertake certain activities.
We know that the demands on your bank balance are many but this is important - the campaign of solidarity with the Palestinian people is being hindered and we need to act to remove this constraint. We would very much welcome a donation from you - especially if you are unable to participate in person.
If everyone sent just £5 we would be very much better off. But as some won't even be able to afford that could you consider sending £10 or more?
If you can, please make your cheque out to 'Leicester PSC' and send it to:
