Born and raised here, in South Philadelphia. I'm 48, and the area has changed
very much since I was younger. South Philly was mostly an Italian section of
Philly. South Philly is nestled between two rivers - the Delaware (other side
Jersey) and the Schuylkill (skoo-kill). The two river wards were mostly Irish
(that is were I am from), and the rest mostly Italian. People have been leaving
the area in the past several years. Some neighborhoods have become better with a
small influx of young professionals from outside of the city. Other areas have
huge populations of Southeast Asians and Central Americans - these areas are
often poor and run down.
Anyway to answer your question there were tons of Italian Delis throughout the
area at one time, but only a hand full remain now. Supermarkets and the influx
of new immigrants pushed the delis out. I looked up the name Capitano, in the
phone directory here (and I'm confident there were numerous Capitanos in the
area at one time), but only one exists now and it is a private residence and not
a deli. Sorry I couldn't help.

Hi Perry

I used to have a friend that I called Cappy when I was stationed at Loring. He
was a Sicilian descent. His last name was really Capitano that is why we called
him Cappy. Anyway, his family used are owned their own butcher shop and Philly
but I don't remember what side of town that was on. I know that Philly is a big
place but I was just wondering if you are familiar with a butcher shop that had
the last name Capitano?

Regarless there is no active duty base except for Hanscom.  Fort Devens is down
to just a few reserve buildings and my understanding those are going away and
the reserve unit moved to another location near Devens.  I got this info from
my son who's with the reserve unit there.  A developer wants that land where
they are at...

I believe that this all started back right after WWI. If you think about how
the Socialist movement started and what they said about our country it is in
lock step (no pun intended). The soviets said that they would take our country
without firing a shot and it is happening. The Democratic party has been
hijacked, perhaps by a core of socialists, perhaps not. But if you look at the
policies that they have been pushing (really think that the Republicans have a
hand in it as well), letting big industry move off shores (do not think that we
could fight a sustained war now if we had to with a major enemy) and setting up
more and more of a nanny state, socialism is exactly the way we are moving. The
only problem is that just as the Russian empire fell when certain groups got
greedy and wanted all the wealth as well as the power, we seem to be starting
off with those two greeds (?) in the beginning.

Being stationed at Loring and then at Pease we thought that we would eventually
return to the NE but after watching the way the politics have gone we have
decided to stay in TN. Right or wrong the thought process that we have found
here is like what we experienced in NE back in the 70's. People actually care
about each other and will look out for each other. Unfortunately one only finds
this in small locations. Do not mean to say that there are not good people in
NE THERE ARE!! But if one looks at where their politicians are taking them and
do nothing about it we get what we do or do not vote for.

Sorry for the rant, still have great affection for NE.

They are all electronic division. The runways are leased to massport.

They just closed down Brunswick Naval Air Station in Maine. Pease is long
gone... just a few tankers for the guard unit there. Weymouth is long gone...
not sure of the status of Groton Naval.

So basically the whole north east is open to Canadian Attack.... :) But
seriously there is no protection for the north east and we are the closest to
Europe should something happen. They have cut the military back to barebones to
where they hire mercenaries to guard our embassy's. What's up with that? That
was always the Army and Marine duty. Now we rely on companies like Black water
which is nothing more than mercenaies and taking us for big bucks. I say regrow
the military and get rid of these idiots.

You can try to blame Obama but this has been in the making since Ronny Ray Gun's
time. They keep cutting back and eventually we will be defenseless.

bases......their location which was once a major factor in building these bases
is no longer strategic??

Back in like 82/83 the LE's raided our Dorms at night.  It was a sunday night
and they trashed the place.  We had a general coming in the next morning.  Our
Commander called the back line and asked for everyone who was getting off shift
to report to the dorm by 730am to try to clean up the dorm before he brought the
general.  It was never going to happen.  So we changed into shorts and tees
with mukluks, and it was 10 degrees out.  Started playing ultimate frisbee on
the front lawn, or should say front snow field.  General took one look said he
wasnt getting out of the car and declared us all crazy.

Then at some point.. cant remember exactly when it was the early 80's an LE went
through an intersection by the Arch Hanger.  He wasnt going to a call and he
blew through the stop sign.  Broadsided an FMS tech.  Had to medivac the tech
out of Loring on a 135.  I think he was out like 9 months.  Came back to work,
was at work long and he was diagnosed with cancer and died shortly later.
Everyone attributed his cancer to the extensive surgeries he had from the
accident.

Always like the SPs better.  Dealt with them with the alert cage all the
time.  We use to pull up to the red line, tanker truck to bomber truck in the
cage and see how long it took for the SP's to figure out us KC135 Crew chiefs
were now in the bomber area and the bomber chiefs were in the tanker area.
The SP's were so use to seeing us it use to take them some time to figure out we
had climbed over the drivers seats and changed trucks.

Of course then there's the days of heating water on the tankers on alert.  Cant
say I miss that! :)

81-84

42nd OMS 63-8043 Crew Chief

The drug bust? I think in late 1980. This is how I remember it. Someone was
busted for drugs (an SP), coke or meth, That person was threatened with a
lengthy jail term unless he gave up some names. A domino effect started after
that. I remember showing up for guardmount and someone daily being called out
and taken away. Got so bad, we lost an entire flight. A flight serviced the day
shifts With B, C,and D serviced the swings and mids. Lost so many men C flight
was dissolved.

I went to corrective custody for a couple of weeks because 2 LEs said that I
threatened them. Our C,O. believed them, He said he knew how I handled myself. I
never threatened them.  Our C.O. was new - how could he have known me. We went
through several commanders in a couple months because of a major drug bust in
our squadron. A lot of innocent guys went down with the drug bust. I was
awakened one morning with my commander and several LEs in my room one morning
(let themselves in while I was sleeping). I was told to get dressed and informed
of the charges against me. I got an article 15 from my C.O. for communicating
threats.

The Ramp Rats site is open to former Law Enforcement, Security of Loring AFB
only. Has many members from about all years that Loring was open. Even when it
was called Limestone AFB. Great bunch of people on the site.

The Ramp Rats site is open to former Law Enforcement, Security of Loring AFB
only. Has many members from about all years that Loring was open. Even when it
was called Limestone AFB. Great bunch of people on the site.

John

Your right one is JR, Gordy,Lawrence,Danny,Stanley.
Jr and Gordy still live in Limestone.
You still working for the Post Office?
We were up last Mar and Apr and might be the last ones to stay at the Loring Inn
before it closed. We left not long after the big fire in Downtown Limestone.

Are you a member of the Loring Ramp Rats website?
During my time in the cops at Loring someone nailed a soda can to the road
in front of the wing HQ's. It was known that the Base Commander would
pickup stuff on the road while having his Staffcar Door open and still moving
down the road. Some say he fell out of the vehicle and the car rolled down
the hill into a snow bank.
The Wing Commander had the windows blown out in his Staff car being too
Close to a B-52 will it was running up its engines!
