Hi Abhishek,
I dont think you will need the other certificate. As long as you have the marks listed, that should do. They do not place that much importance on these things. Just get those statements attested and you will be fine.

Hi Team,
I passed my 10th from ICSE board. When taking certificates from my school, I got only Tenth Statement of marks which has list of all marks in the subjects and my pass grade. I heard that a student from ICSE board requires two certificates i.e. one statement of marks and the some other certificate to show as 10th proof when sending applications. Is that true. Kindly help me in this regard. If you require any scanned copy ofmy certificate I would do it if you could send a mail to the above email-id of mine.
Anticipating your help. Thanks in advance.

Hey ,
I gave my gre today, scored a 1490 : 800Q +690V. AWA yet to receive.
10th : 92%
12th : 87 % (ICSE)
Studying in RVCE in Bangalore in  CS. GPA so far : 8.54
Done one project on System software, working on parallel computing right now.
No papers yet.
Looking at these univs for MS in CS for fall 2012 : have to filter it down to about 8 max.

Ambitious : All these colleges are good ones. I would definitely urge you to apply.
Georgia Tech
Michigan, Ann arbor,
Wisconsin Madison
maryland college park
amherst - heard a bit stingy with admits.

Moderate : Most of the college are good. You should try in these.
North carolina
Penn state
Rutgers
Virginia tech
SUNY stone brook

Minnesota- do not recommend this one as well. The college used to be high ranked, but in recent years the ranking has gone down and never picked up. So I think this college is on a down hill, so better avoid
Southern California - I do not recommend this one.

Are the safe universities safe enough? And any more safe i can add?
I do not believe in safe univs. If you dont want to study there then why apply. Only go for univs you really want to study in. And dont be desperate to get to US. As of now the scenario for development is much better in India than here. Moreover if getting to US is the only aim, then get into software and they will send you here after a few years. So when there is this easy way, why waste time and money going to school.

Thanks a lot,
Suneet Puri

I think 2 months of time for GRE is more than enough. So you can take the old pattern itself. Even if you have to take the new pattern, remember they wont change the pattern entirely. They will only make a few changes here and there. Best of luck.

here you can choose your own courses. So as long as you are doing some required number of courses from your department, you should be fine. If you want to do only electronics, then apply for it and do only courses related to it. you dont have to bother about CS courses. Its only that, in the colleges the departments are not considered 2 but as 1 for the administrative purpose. As for the others, they are two different depts, with separate courses, staffs and labs/classes etc.

Hi All,

I am a 2010 B.tech graduate currently working in an IT consultancy firm.
I am planning to apply for MS in Computer Science for the fall 2012 intake and need your help in deciding which universities to apply for.
I know this is a bit early but I have decided to start applying early and I am going to take up my TOEFL pretty soon.

My Profile: Profile is good. With a few publications, your chances will be greatly improved.
1) GRE score : 1290
2) TOEFL score : 100 (Expected)
3) B.tech Cumulative % : 72%
4) Major : Computer Science
5) Experience : 22 months by the time of joining (~2 yrs)
6) Areas of interest : Algorithms, AI, Networks, Information Security and Web technology

The following are some of the universities I have shortlisted,
1) North Carolina State University -good school, a bit crowded. so chances of funding will be difficult. since lot of students esp indian, so competitive, hence good edu and research never the less.
2) University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill - good school.
3) University of Southern California - do not recommend.
4) University of California--Santa Barbara - good school. Since in California, good for jobs and other things but will be a bit expensive.
5) University of California--Irvine - average school. not as good as santa barbara.
6) University of Illinois--Chicago - very good school. this would be your Ambitious bet.

I think you can look for 2 more schools in the Ambitious (very good) category and a few more in the Competitive (good).

I would be much grateful if you could evaluate my profile and suggest me some good universities to apply to as well as evaluate my prospects of admission into the above mentioned universities.

Thanks in advance :)

hi,

I have already requested regarding university selection but I didnot get any reply.

Please suggest a few universities which are specified below which suite my profile.

University of Illinois Chicago

Purdue University

Auburn University

These 3 are very good universities. You should apply there and consider them Ambitious.

Rochester Institute of Technology - Famous of there career service and campus interviews.
University of Cincinnati - Considered a very good college even though the ranking seems to be low.

University of Texas Dallas - this college is ok.

These 3 are good and consider them Competitive.

Indiana University - I dont think there is any other good univ in Indiana other than Purdue.
 University of Georgia Athens
Georgia State University
University of New Mexico - The state of New Mexico is a desert. So for jobs and internship you will have to move to Texas or California.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute

I do not know about these colleges.

my profile is

GRE: 1350
Toefl: 102
Acads: 78(upto 4-1)
X: 91.6
XII: 97.4
I am a computer science student and want to do masters in the same domain with databases as major.I want to apply for fall 2011.

I hav chosen d following univ.pls provide ur comments:

Univ of Florida,Gainsville
Texas A&m college station

Gainsville and A&M are about the same level. Both are good and competitive as well as crowded. Lot of Indians so its going to be tough getting in and maintaining. Chances of funds will also be difficult.
Arizona state univ-this is a big school like A&M. Arizona is kind of desert, so will have to move to the next state of California for jobs and internships. Dont know anything more than that.
kansas state univ -dont know.
michigan state univ- their cut-off for admission is very high. its given on the website itself that they prefer IITs. So watch out.
Illinois institute of technology - Good school
Univ of houston ,main campus -  average school.
univ of missouri,rolla

As I told you, look at the college rankings and make a list. Then look at research, coursework and deadlines. With this you will have a good picture of the college. Then think if you want to study there and be a part of that research. Once you have a fairly long list, we can then cut down some and you can apply.

No, I am not currently in US.

>>I dont know what you mean by loss in the long term.
I can wait for one more year and do preparation for GRE and finances. Then, I can get admission in good university. Again, I loose 2 years almost full time in that case. Getting MS degree from good university is always better than doing it in average or below average university. It helpes in long term.
Studying in a top college is definitely better than an average college. The research there will be top notch. There will be students from top colleges in the world, so lots of competition. This will push you harder to perform and learn. Being between those top students will definitely increase your horizon. In the end getting jobs will also be easier. In your case the last one might not apply that much coz of your previous exp, but still. So if I have a job and have to decide between this case, I choose to wait until august and apply to top colleges for fall 2012. In the mean time prepare for GRE and score high. High GRE not only helps in admits, it also helps in getting funding.

Is CPT means full time job? Can I do it anywhere in USA? Any conditions for CPT?
CPT is almost like a full time job, but you can avail CPT only after 2 semesters. The other conditions of CPT varies with the colleges. As I had told you before, you will have to balance your CPT+OPT period based on your univ guidlines, to have enough time after your graduation to find a job and file for H1. Mostly the univs do not give CPT for more than 1 year. Also some colleges let you take courses while being on CPT, but most of them dont. So it will be either you take courses or go for CPT.

I got AWA 3. This is mediocre score. Will it affect my admission eligibiliy?
The colleges dont care much about AWA. Moreover 3 and 3.5 is about average. So dont worry about it.

Subject: [MSinUS.com] need advice about MSCS admission

I am looking for Masters in Computer science admission.

This is my profile:
BE(Mech) with 64.38 first class from Mumbai university.
12th: 78, 10th: 72
Experience: full time 6 years in MNCs
Current status: employed in US MNC
What do you mean by that. Are you currently in US. If you are, then the only help is that you can go and meet the profs in the college you want to study and talk to them about the program. Other than that I dont see any advantage in being in US or India.

GRE: 1120 (680-Q, 440-V)
your GRE is very low. should think about taking it again and scoring somewhere around 1300. Only then you can think of getting in top colleges.
TOEFL iBT: 70-90 (I shall give TOEFL in Feb 2011.)
Finance: Currently, I have 5 lakh rupees as liquid funds. Other funds are difficult to manage because, I have family responsibilities.

I have these options:
Full time MS: I am stressed about finances in this case.
MS with CPT after 9 months: In this case, I do not have financial problem. My current company may give me internship in USA.
Both these are same. Every course in US has the option of availing CPT after 9 months. The structure is CPT + OPT (after graduation)=1 year. So if you avail 6 months of CPT then you will have 6 months of OPT. But again this all depends on the college. For eg: in my college, the CPT doesnt affect our OPT. We can have 1 year CPT and then get 1 year OPT.
Again if you want to do internship in your company in summer, then how much do you think you will earn. You will still need some for of finance for your fees and expense. If you plan to work and still attend classes, then it will become like work-study and you will have to have both your job and college in the same town.
So I assume getting a loan or something like that might help. Anyways do think about it.

Complete work-study: I shall working from first day and attending evening or weekend classes. For that, I need to be in vicinity of university for ease of attending classes.

Ya, this is possible but you will have to find the college near your company and that college should be offering such courses. Some college do not have that option and prefer only full time students.

I need advance on following points.
1. Cost benefit analysis of all 3 options from quality of education, value of degree from various university, financial needs, physical stress(in 3rd case, it is stressful to attend classes in evening for 2 years), loss in long term due to current financial problems.
As for the effort, you will certainly have to work hard and put in a lot more effort than the regular student. I dont know what you mean by loss in the long term. Do weigh in all your sources and see what is best for you. If you have any more doubts, do write to me.

Regards,
Biju.

-Thanks in advance

Vikas
