Re: [Model ships] 'Jolly Roger' & 'Captain Kidd' by Lindberg
Delbert,
You are exactly right. Years ago, Lindberg built a model of the La Flore. I don't know if it's still in production or not. I always thought that the Soverign was a funny choice for a pirate ship, too.
Do you, or anyone know if the Lindberg twin model kit of the Merrimack and the Monitor is still in production? As far as I know, they are the only models ever produced of either ship, and were quite good, if rather small in scale. I'd love to have that kit again, but haven't seen it in years.
I have both ships. On my copy of the "Jolly Roger" on the transom (I think- it's been a couple of years since I've looked at it) I can still see where they removed the original name of the ship. It's La Flore. I have a copy of ' 'The Ship' by Bjorn Landstrom which shows a picture of her & the kit definitely looks like the "Jolly Roger". The book says she was a French frigate from the 1780's. It only has the one picture of her. I would love to find more reference. I think the "Captain Kidd" may be the Wappen von Hamburg, a 17th century German ship. I'm just basing that on a picture of a wooden kit in a Model Expo catalog. Lindberg also released "Blackbeard's pirate ship" which is really amusing since it's the Sovereign of the Seas! Can you imagine a pirate with a 1st rate 100 gun ship of the line? It's not a great kit but the two you have, especially the "Jolly Roger", are quite nice kits. Hope this helps.
