Re: [Model ships] wood ships

Hi,

I built plastic models for years then switched to wood ships for a bit more challange. I certainly got more than enough to last the rest of my life. I love building wood ships and find the skills I learned building plastic models carries over very well. As far as what ship to build the choice is simple, Build the ship that you would love to have a model of. If it holds your attention you have a better chance of completing it. Now for a few tips for all thier worth! If its your first time working with wood try to start with a more pointed bow, like a clipper, there is less complicated bends in the wood than an apple bow ship.I found, for me, a larger scale ship is easier than a smaller one, you can add more detail and the wood is more forgiving. Depending on availlable time be prepared for a model to take 6 months to years, I find that I am always re-making parts or adding more detail to the kit. A good place to get kits is www.modelexpo-online.com thier prices and selection is excellent, sale and clearance prices can't be beat. Ships in Scale magazine is a good source for information and you can buy years of thier magazine on CD, the CD is very well done with every issue scaned page by page, they have a website www.seaways.com  with lots of links to information. I hope this is enough to get you started, if you have any specific questions I'll be glad to try to help. By the way the Harvey by Artesania Latina is the first ship I completed, I baught it in 1989 and it took 2 years to complete.

Welcome to a very rewarding hobbie,

                                                                 Ken D.
