Ron....I have not heard of plans for a rescue ship as described by you. The
only possible sources I can think of would be Loyal Hannah Plan Service (also
under the name http://www.taubmansonline.com/)and perhaps the US Navy Archives.

Hi Ron,
I can't seem to find your corvette photos in the files section, I would enjoy
seeing them! Could you possibly send me a url for the files?
BTW, a project I have wanted to do for some time is a prewar ASR )Submarine
Rescue Ship), the type based on the Bird class minesweepers.
I have tried Floating Drydock, and Maryland Silver Company- do you happen to
know if there are drawings available anywhere for this type of ship?
It could be as an ATF, ASR, or minesweeper, the hull and superstructure are what
is important.

It is definitly worth getting, and it is the cheapest and best way to get a
Flower class corvette in this scale-you can go as far as you want in modifying
or accuratizing the kit, and doing the research is a ball!
At the minimum, replacing the 20 mms will go a long way- and you should be able
to improve the depth charge racks with some Evergreen stock-
If you are planning to get one, I would also get the new Shipcraft book on
Flower Class Corvettes- it will give you a lot of the material you need to build
the ship, and many of John Lambert's fine drawings are included.
There is an excellent Yuku site on Flowers, and Bob Pearson has a good site on
Flowers including his conversion of the kit to a RCN short foc'sle type.
There are a bunch of different configurations you can do easily- what is time
consuming is finding enough documentation on any one particular ship, but it can
be a fun project-

Actually, off and on I have close to four years into my corvette- I don't like badmouthing any model, and my hat is off to Matchbox (Revell) as probably the only company that would have brought out a 1/72nd scale Flower- this is the second one I have built. The Revell kit is a nice model, with room for improvement- I've done my bit supporting them, I have 3 more in my closet;-) That being said, there are a few areas for improvement- it does build into a nice kit OOB, but starting with the deck, there is way too much planking. The long forecastle Flowers had planking on the forecastle, and the compass platform, and two small areas aft on each side of the engine room casing- not the whole deck. I still have work to do on the bridge and wheelhouse, but the glass in the wheelhouse I cut from microscope slides. The Matchbox bridge is OK, I just felt like going farthur. There was also so much variation, as my friend said (he is building USS Saucy) "They could have called them Snowflakes since no two are alike" The depth charge racks can use replacement, or just inprovement and the depth charges are a bit interesting- they have a "nub" on both ends. I think the kit designers saw a photo of a heavy depth charge and thought the nub was on both ends- it was'nt. It was a standard depth charge had a weight on one end to make it sink faster, ind it was only on one end. H-R has 1/72nd scale replacements. The 20 mm Oerlikons are actuallly terrible, I would order the replacement from H-R, it adds a lot to the kit. The 2 pdr Pom Pom has possibilities, you could make a nice one using some Evergreen styrene to add some details or use it straight OOB. I replaced my portholes and eyebrows with the GLS items- it enhances the hull a lot. The bandstands for the 4 " could use some detail, and the 2 pdr platform is better done in Evergreen sheet, it will give you crisper details. On the subject of the hull, the hull has a bar keel, but I decided I could live with that. It does build up into a nice kit, and adapts easily to RC- building it, you need to decide what you want- after my first one (HMS Jonquil) I wanted to build a running museum quality model. My Jonquil was built pretty much OOB. After the Castle class, if I do another, I would enjoy doing a RCN short forecastle corvette like HMCS Chicoutimi. Most of my comments are those of a confirmed rivet counter, I was really out to produce maximum detail and learn as much as possible about the ships- I reciently bought "Titanic- The Ship Magnificent" and found volume 1 to be very useful for my work since both ships were riveted hull, and designed to merchant specs. The Revell kit is a nice model, with room for improvement- I will attempt to put up a few progress photos soon-

Welcome aboard Jim. I have a question for you if I may. I had been considering purchasing Revell's Flower Class Corvette. From the photos on the box it looks like a very good model. I was wondering why you scrapped most of the model, and what was your initial impression of the kit.

This is a shot of a sister ship of the Princess Maquinna. It is the Princess Norah which I scratch built. Since our previous conversations, I have found out that the color of the funnel is Humbrol # 63. I managed to find a hobby shop who had one in stock, which made me happy as I had been told that number was no longer produced. (Don't know if this is true or not). Anyway thanks for your interest.... .Ron

Welcome Jim - I did check with H&R at the time I posted that email, he was not shipping as he was waiting for his compressor to be repaired. But that was just a few days delay. He said at that time small orders went out pretty quick, it was just big orders that might take a few days. I had just got back into building ships and wasn't sure if the place even existed.
I built a couple of those Corvette kits, nice kits if someone spends some time on it. Sounds like you are! :-) Hope we get to see it.

Hi All,
Just reporting aboard, I have been building models all my life, and my current
project I am completing is a 1/72ns scale Flower Class Corvette.
I began with the Revell kit, but the only thing left of it is the hull, stack,
rudder and cowl vents. The rest is a combination of H-R, GLS, and scratch
building.
Planning on getting started on a 1/48th scale Castle Class corvette after my
Flower completes.
I live in Mill Creek, Washington, and work as an airframe and powerplant
mechanic, so ship modelling is a nice break from airplanes.
Jim Hathaway
What I am trying to determine is whether or not Humbrol paint # 63 is still available. I'm attaching a shot of my Princess Norah which will show you the color. Ron
From what I can tell they appear to be buff at least 3/4 (if not more) up, then the rest painted black. I couldn't see any funnel markings on the examples (for this era) that I saw.
