Hello Ron,
According to "The Bluejacket's Manual" an HM3 would be a Hospital Corpsman
(Petty Officer) Third Class. They are assigned as tecnicians in the Medical
Corps doing everything from dental assistants to combat medics. I believe, but
do not know for certain, that fmf refers to Fleet Marine Force, a US Marine
Corps group assigned to ships. The Navy supplies combat medics to the USMC.

Corpsmen are not dental assistants, the Navy has a separate rating called Dental Techs (DT). I do not recall DT's being part of the FMF though.

Sorry Ron,

Just quoting the "Bluejackets Manual" 22nd Edition page 28, where they list HM's
as serving as "dentists assistants" . You are correct in saying that there is a
rating Dental Technician, which, in my reading on page 26, indicates that the DT
does more technical tasks
than a dentist's assistant.

Probably mor than anyone wants to know about this.

Al

Sorry Ron, but according to "The Bluejacket's Manual" 22nd Edition, page 28,
Hospital Corpsmen (HM) act as "dentist's assistantants". You are correct in
saying that there is a rating known as Dental Technician (DT) who perform more
technical dental procedures such as prosthetics, x-ray techniques, clinical
laboratory procedures, etc.

All of which is much more than the original information requested which
referred, I believe, to a HM assigned as a medic with the Fleet Marine Force.

Al Blevins

PS: If both these messages get posted I apologize for my impatience.

That is interesting Al. I am retired Navy and never saw an HM doing dental stuff, only DT's. Being with the FMF though I guess they might have to do basic dental care in the field. You know what, I have to take this all back as I must be using my butt cheeks for ear muffs again. When I was on destroyers we didn't normally have a DT and had to use a corpsmen until we were able to get to a dentist. AM I ALREADY GETTING SENILE!!!!!!!

Hi Ron,

Going back into ancient history (the 1940's) my brother served as an HM2 though
the rate was then known as Pharmicists Mate (PM). I can recall his telling about
cleaning a sailor's teeth. Probably well before the DT rate was established.

Being a combat engineer in the Army in the late 50's I do not claim to have
experience about Navy rates despite have two sons who served in the Navy. My
knowledge is gleaned from paging through their BJM's.
