Did you meet your reading goals (if you had any) for 2009?
Shala:  I didn't set any goals.  I'm just happy to read as much as I can.

Are you pleased with your results?

If you had to pick just ONE MYSTERY BOOK (I know it's hard) as the best book you read in 2009, which one would it be?

Shala:  I would have to say Bookmarked for Death by Lorna Barrett, the second in the bookshop series.  It's the only book I gave a perfect 5/5.
How about the best MYSTERY SERIES?  Which one was your favorite for 2009?

Shala:  Probably the Scumble River series.  It always gets high marks.

Did you drop any books or series this year (includes non-mystery books and/or series)?

Shala:  I dropped the Sarah Graves fix-it up series and the Miss Zukas series.  I read the first two books of both series and decided not to read anymore.

Did you add any new mystery authors to your Favorites List in 2009?

Shala:  Savannah Reid, Sheila Connolly, Carolyn Hart, Michele Scott, J.A. Konrath, Kate Carlisle, Jeffrey Cohen, and Joanna Campbell Slan.

Do you have any new reading goals for 2010?

Shala:  I would like to try and read a book a week, but we shall see.

Do you have anything that you would like to change in your reading habits for 2010?

Let us know anything else that happened in 2009 that affected your reading, especially mysteries.

Looking forward to reading everyone's answers! :-)

Don't laugh but I only finished 2 books this month.   I think it is a record low for me for any December, let alone for any month. I usually finish 1 to 1.5 books a week. I'm hoping to catch up some for this long weekend and make it a fresh new reading year!

Maid for Murder by Barbara Colley (Charlotte LaRue #1) - rating withheld pending discussion completion
The Whispering Statue by Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew #14) - 4.5

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!

Since it is the new year and many of my favorite authors will have new releases this year, I am anxious for all of them! Of course, it doesn't do me any good since I'm far behind on a lot of my series books.

·         Hannah and Moishe arrive at Norm's house.  Hannah is amazed at all the little details.  The house certainly seems cozy and built for the two of them…or 3 of them if you include Moishe.

·         Moishe eats his grilled dinner and bird watched out the window.

·         Norm even had a kitty litter box put in the utility closet.

ANGIE:  I loved reading about the details of the house.  I know Hannah was a big part of the designing of the house but reading about Hannah seeing it in person for the first time just makes me realize that Norm truly built the house for both of them.

Katie:  Having not read the book where they built the house...the extent that he went to show it was built for her and Moshe made me cringe. But than it is no secret that I prefer Mike.

·         Pam, Lisa and Hannah taste and judge all the breads.

·         They get on the topic of sleeping.  Lisa is a cool sleeper, needing bunches of blankets and Herb is a warm sleeper who throws off the blanket because they are too warm.

·         Hannah comments that her companion in bed is Moishe and he snores real loud and she gets a nose full of cat hair if she snuggles too close to him.

·         There is a tie for the bread:  Mango and Peach.  But, both were baked by the same contestant so there is only one winner.

·         Back home, Moishe is back to his old tricks…staring out the window.  I'm guessing he won't be eating anytime soon either.

·         Norm helps Hannah find an appropriate costume for the magic act.  Hannah pulls out a few hideous bridesmaid dresses.

·         Andrea comes to say that Michelle is at the Eagle, a run-down bar with a bad reputation.  Michelle is hoping to find and question Tasha's 3 brothers.

ANGIE:  I am definitely a cool sleeper and need tons of blankets.  I sleep on my side and always have my feet touching my husband as he is always so warm.  He is definitely a cool sleeper, using Lisa's terminology.  When we had a dog (a small Yorkie), he would sleep between us but it would never be on the pillow; usually at my side.  So, I never had mouthfuls of hair, lol.  And, thankfully, neither the dog or my husband snore.

I laughed at all the bridesmaid dresses.  I have a few and I really wonder why I am saving them.  LOL

Katie:  I definitely need lots of covers.

·         The girls go to the bar and find Michelle dressed in a biker outfit dancing with some freak.  Norm butts in and gets the guy to disappear.

·         Michelle was able to find out that the 3 Hicks brothers were at a demolition derby during the time of the murder and were caught for speeding shortly thereafter.  This can easily be verified, I'm sure.

·         Mike comes over to apologize and kisses Hannah.  All it takes is the kiss and all is forgiven, lol.

ANGIE:  Mike should have kissed Hannah right when he found out he was angry at her.  You'd think he would know by now what his kisses do to her.

I did learn something at the biker bar:  a Pony is a half keg of beer.  Am I the only one who did not know that?

Not much has been done to catch this killer, so I have no comments about suspects, motives, etc.

Katie:   I think saying "a kiss and all is forgiven" is really dismissive of the information Hannah secretly over heard which explained why he acts that way. Yes I knew what a Pony was. I couldn't believe her sister went to such lengths to investigate in such a rowdy area.

·         Michelle goes on to say that Tasha lied about being late to an event, was caught using bad language and then didn't even show up to an event.  It appears she would rather have spent time with her boyfriend instead of competing.

·         Since Tasha's father was the one who signed the forms for her to participate (since she was only 17), her father would be the one to receive the cash prize.

·         Mike and Norman talk about the killing and gruesome details were discussed.  There was one blow to the back of her head, smashing some of her teeth.  And, the second blow was just for good measure.

·         Hannah gets upset at them because Willa was a friend and she thought they were being insensitive.

ANGIE:  I thought Hannah was going a bit overboard when she got mad at the men for their gory discussion.  I guess I am used to reading mysteries, love gory details and enjoy shows such as CSI, etc. where there is a lot of forensic details and such.  Them calling Willa "the victim" wouldn't have bothered me.  I'm sure Mike and Norm could have been a bit more sensitive to Hannah's feelings as Willa was a person and friend of Hannah's.  But, still, Hannah being angry at them was ridiculous, IMO.  I was glad to see Norm apologize right away though.  Mike, on the other hand, had no idea why Hannah was upset and didn't even know what he was apologizing for.

Katie:   I kind of understood this...but than I'm the type that tends to over-react when it comes to empathy. There is just something really startling about seeing a dead body of someone you are close to and than when you are in the process of dealing with that lost you see other people moving on or distancing themselves from the loss by using detached terminology.

·         Norm invites Hannah and Moishe over for dinner.

·         Hannah asks Lisa to replace Willa in the baking contest.

·         To return the favor, Lisa asks Hannah to be Herb's assistant in the magic act since Lisa is claustrophobic.  Hannah reluctantly agrees.

Katie:  Lisa was too short. Hannah agrees even though she is claustrophobic.

·         Herb and Hannah do through a dry run of the magic act.  Hannah has to get into position while Herb creates the suspense and then he shoves 12 collapsible swords into the box.  Hannah knocks 3 times to say she's OK, he then pulls out the swords and Hannah comes out unharmed.

·         Hannah goes to the police station to deliver some cookies and overhears Mike counseling Lonnie about how it's important to shut down your emotions while investigating and depersonalize the victim so they can have a clear head, etc.

·         I guess Lonnie knew Willa and even asked her out a couple times.

ANGIE:  It was neat to see Mike helping Lonnie out with his emotional attachment to "the victim".  He seems to be a good boss.  I don't know if the author was alluding to Lonnie being involved with Willa's murder, but I think that thought is crazy.

Katie:  I really liked how Hannah over heard Mike explaining his actions that irritated her. I liked the maturity in the relationship that Hannah got mad and Mike thought about how his actions were perceived, but didn't attempt to explain himself directly to Hannah. In effect he gave a cursory apology at the time for what happened, but remained true to who he is in not apologizing for being himself.

What did you think about the magic act?  Did you know that collapsible swords are used?

Katie: I thought it was hilarious the way the dresses came back.

How would you feel about being Herb's assistant?  Are you claustrophobic?

Katie:  Not claustrophobic, but I'd rather be doing the tricks than be the assistant. I love the magic store.

I like the series Angie.  The yoga is a twist and the main character has relocated a a small town in upstate New York to keep the studio, but it also has a lot of the traditional stuff:  homicide detective boyfriend, eccentric characters, a couple of animals.  I think I liked the first book better, but I will continue with the series.

This is another series in my pile to try.  How does this book compare to the first one?  I don't know much about this series other than it centers around yoga.

A.J. eyed her mother skeptically.  Elysia was smiling enigmatically to herself, apparently going for the All-knowing Master Detective thing, but A.J. wasn't buying it.  J.W. Young had never been high on their list of suspects-nor had he volunteered any information that offered any particular insight into anyone else's possible motives.  He believed implicitly in Jane Peters' innocence, but that wasn't proof.

I love Greek food! I think I made Mousakka once many years ago. It was so much work and time consuming that I determined it was easier just to go to my favorite Greek restaurant down the street and get carryout. :-)

I have a bunch of cookbooks and there are several that I have never cooked a single thing out of!?!?  It seems I started a collection and didn't even realize it!  I love to look thru and read cookbooks but I hate to cook so mostly they are just nice picture books for me...

I did get a good one for my hubby for Christmas though.  My hubby is half Greek and has eaten a lot of Greek food over the years but never had any recipes.  I found a Greek cookbook that was published by the Greek Orthodox Church and everyone knows that church cookbooks are always the best!  He can't wait to start making some of the stuff from his childhood.

I'm still waiting for the Taco book to come in. I agree tacos are pretty basic but I'm hoping for some new inspiration. I'm tired of eating the same ole stuff!

I did pick up the Stir fry book and was really impressed. I'm going to try a recipe a week and if I like them I'll buy it with one of the gift cards I got for Christmas. I wasn't impressed with the one pot recipes and will be returning it tomorrow. I've learned to get my cookbooks from the library or PBS as so many I don't end up liking.

, you are using AOL. I know nothing about AOL, honestly, since it is a third-party email/web program.  I use Thunderbird as my email client and I can change the HTML text to whatever color I'd like. If you are replying via Yahoo email or Yahoo groups, they have different standard colors available but you must select Rich Text format to do so. Plain text does not allow color changing.

Ok, this is totally off the subject but has to deal with the answers. How, you are asking yourself? I can change mine, no problem but when I go to do it so my answer color is different than you guys it, being the computer, not me, goes back up to the top of the page.

Donna:  I agree.  It seemed strange to me that Hannah was so sensitive.  I had the impression that she and Willa were very new friends as she didn't seem to know very much about Willa.  And murder seems to be often a topic of discussion with her, so why does it bother her now?  But you never know.  I used to work in a hospital and we would discuss gory details about surgical cases over lunch without thinking a thing about it, but once we had a surgical tech join us for a meal and she couldn't eat with us because of our discussion topic.  We had no idea the subject would bother her, since she practically lived in the OR, but had to make sure to change the subject whenever she joined us at future times.
What did you think about the magic act?  Did you know that collapsible swords are used?
How would you feel about being Herb's assistant?  Are you claustrophobic?

It has nothing to do with your laptop.  It's whatever software program you are using to reply. In your case, you are using AOL.

Donna:  I enjoyed the description as well.  Seems like Norman goes all out to please Hannah, but doesn't seem to have much of a problem sharing her attention with Mike.  I would expect to see a little more rivalry between them, but then again, this is the first book I have read in the series, so maybe I've missed something.

LOL

Donna:  My husband and I are both cool sleepers...but he is always toasty warm.  He laughs at me because no matter how cold it is or how many blankets are piled up, I always have to have one foot free from the covers.  Strange habit, I think I've had it all of my life.

Donna:  You are not alone.  I didn't know a pony was a half keg of beer.  Seems like I remember the tiny bottle, like 8 oz, being called a pony.  Maybe I got it confused.

Stephanie,

It's a cute series.  I will continue with it.

How did you like The Lovely Bones?  I have that scheduled for reading either this weekend or the first of the following week.  I saw a review of the movie, which may or may not have come out yet, that wasn't very good, but I think they said that the movie didn't do the book justice.

A.J. eyed her mother skeptically.

How did you like The Lovely Bones?  I have that scheduled for reading either this weekend or the first of the following week.  I saw a review of the movie, which may or may not have come out yet, that wasn't very good, but I think they said that the movie didn't do the book justice.

I read this book earlier in the year and really enjoyed it.  What do you think of it so far?

A.J. eyed her mother skeptically.

Debbie-

I enjoyed the book but it is very...different.  I enjoyed the story told from the viewpoint of the deceased girl but I found the ending odd and it really didn't give me "closure".  I like a nice wrapped up happy ending so I guess that is why it bothered me.

The movie comes out in January sometime and I hear some complaints about it as well.
I heard some complaints about how they don't show what happens to Susie because the director felt it was not right to show the rape and murder of a young girl.  I would have to say that I agree with this so I am still interested in seeing the movie.

I don't have anything on hold at the library either.  It seems like I am reading books that I have in my piles which I have received from PBS.  I love PBS.  (paperbackswap. com)  You can't go wrong with PBS!

I know, my pile is huge, too.  It was huge before Christmas.  {sigh}  Thank goodness I have committments in my book groups to keep me on a tight reading schedule.  Or, the piles would never go down.  Now, if I would stop ordering books, I might feel good about it.  Nah, that's not gonna happen either.

We are all in the same sinking TBR boat.  But, we are happy!

Angie

I don't have anything on hold at the library since we don't have one but I have a huge TBR pile!  I just ordered the first Blackbird Sisters book and the first three-in-one (Creme de Cocoa?) of the chocoholic series from Paperbackswap. com.  So now my TBR pile will be HUGE!

I was a little surprised about the gory talk. I  don't remember that in her other books. However, it did not bother me as I read gory mysteries also. I  loved the dinner that Norm had to Hannah and Moishe. He really loves the cat.
kim in ohio

I
·         Norm invites Hannah and Moishe over for dinner.
·         Hannah asks Lisa to replace Willa in the baking contest.
·         To return the favor, Lisa asks Hannah to be Herb's assistant in the magic act since Lisa is claustrophobic.  Hannah reluctantly agrees.
Would you volenteer to do a magic act like that? Not me!!! We had a really good magic act come to school years ago and they cut the assistent in two. One of the 5 year olds went nuts, screaming and crying for her. after the show the magician took her back stage and showed her the trick. I thought that was really nice.
kim in ohio
·         Hannah goes to the police station to deliver some cookies and overhears Mike counseling Lonnie about how it's important to shut down your emotions while investigating and depersonalize the victim so they can have a clear head, etc.
·         I guess Lonnie knew Willa and even asked her out a couple times.
ANGIE:  It was neat to see Mike helping Lonnie out with his emotional attachment to "the victim".  He seems to be a good boss.  I don't know if the author was alluding to Lonnie being involved with Willa's murder, but I think that thought is crazy.
What did you think about the magic act?  Did you know that collapsible swords are used?
How would you feel about being Herb's assistant?  Are you claustrophobic?
