And before that, I'm taking my fiance Ian with me to Nepal. We leave on March 12. Wow.
I'm both excited and overwhelmed.

As for the rest, I'm working as a buyer for a growing, crazy, fun, locally-owned multi-sport
store, buying for camping, travel, backpacking, cycling, and opening up a climbing

We'll be having a party on April 30 to celebrate the wedding, so if you're near SF at that
time, let me know!

Hey all,

If anyone is considering Crisis Corps and doesn't have
anything going on this summer, these sound like some
great opportunities.

Hope everyone is doing well-

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the mass email, but there are some interesting Crisis Corps positions opening up that I though you, or a friend, may be interested in.

Cameroon: Project Hope needs an HIV/AIDS Technical Communications Coordinator. Basic French skills are needed and experience developing HIV/AIDS education and training programs with specific emphasis on Behavior Change Communication strategies.

Guinea: American Refugee Committee requested an HIV/AIDS Community Health Coordinator.  Written and spoken French required and experience implementing and managing HIV/AIDS or Community Health programs and working with refugee populations (desired) - lots of project management skills needed!

Sri Lanka: ICRC via American Red Cross requested 4 CCVs to work on a community health project focused on implementing an HIV/AIDS education program into the water and sanitation program (already established).  This is only a THREE MONTH position starting in June, so perfect for school break.  Also, not a ton of HIV/AIDS experience is needed - more experience with community assessments, coordinating resources, and developing strategies to communicate resources available within communities (no language requirement).  The position is not open yet but should within the next week.

Kenya: 2 positions to open by the end of the week for summer inputs.  Focus will be on developing income generating activies and training sessions on micro enterprise development for peolpe living with HIV/AIDS or groups of guardians of AIDS orphans.

For more details check out open positions section of the CC website: www.peacecorps.gov/rpcv/crisiscorps  <http://www.peacecorps.gov/rpcv/crisiscorps

 Dear Friend

I  have not been written you  for a long time. I am sorry that   I have been  very busy  last  few months.   I am sure that you are aware of the  situation of  Nepal.

Nepal is going through  a very difficult time, a time in which we have  lost our fundamental rights.  The seven parties alliance  started a general strike last week,  and this time it got momentum and public supports. When the king suspended the prime minister one and half years ago, many people were  hopeful that the country would have less currption,  the government would be more accountable and on the top of any, they would have peace, the king's address to the nation had given a lot of hopes.  The people were fed up with the  politicians and  wanted a way out  from  ten years' Maoists insurgency,   The king's move was welcomed by many people....................................

but  now  the time has proved that  there is no alertnative to democracy, peace  is must for the development and we cannot just see  our nation being a failure country and   Nepalese citizens also like to excericise their freedoms to express and excercise democracy.............. this fight  and movement is not just of the seven parties..................

We talk about development and freedom but   always  wait for others to fight for the democracy.............................
Thousand   of  protesters, human right activists   who have been  arrested. This afternoon,  staff all internatinal organisations working in Nepal took out a peaceful protest in Kathmandu but the police interven the programme and did not allow to have a peace ful rally, it was the first time in Nepal that the  staff of  international development agecies have come to the street  and showed solidarity to the democratice movement.

The hospitals in the capital are full of  injured people  and need  emegency treamnets, the doctors  have also been
arrested  as they have  supported the  democratic movement.

The civil scoiety has formed a fund to support the treatment of the injured demonstrators of the movement, I am wondering if you know any individual or organisations which supports such crisis.............

Lets pray for  with us  for Democracy in Nepal

 Purna

Although I am not affilaited with any particualr organisation I am ammber of the Centre for International Health and Human Rights studies based in Canada- a loose group of intenational health researchers. But we are working with several orgainstions like Peac thru health, PHR, and centres for human rights at Emory and Hopkins, IPPNW to show a combined response

We havent decided on a last date  or the number of yet as these doctors are in for 3 months as of now but intend to deliver maybe once 1000 plus signatures are reached

You can sign at

Namaste Sonal,

Your name was the point of contact on the Health Professionals and Medical Students under Threat in Nepal petition. I am a Returened Peace Corps Volunteer from Nepal and have been cared for by Dr. Madhu. I have a few questions I hope you can answer:
  • What organization are you associated with?
  • What do you intend to do with the signatures?
  • When is the last date to sign the petition?
  • Where are you located?
  • How many signatures are needed?
Good luck with your efforts and am looking forward to hearing from you.

Linda

All:  Dr. Madhu's wife was able to visit him yesterday at the Bhaktapur Army Camp/Duwakot Armed Police Barracks (details unclear b/c of differing reports).  Anar has sent the details, attached below.  Also, you can see updated photos of Dr. Madhu and the other 24 ("chaubise") with whom he is detained at this site:  http://www.chaubise.blogspot.com/.  They look remarkably good.  I've attached 2 others here -- a headshot so you can pick him out of the crowd and one taken the day of the protest.  Notice that there are no signs, weapons or torches.

Anar's email from this morning:
 Dear David Sir.
Shanaji, Lindaji and Darrenji

Namaskaar.

This morning again I talked to Shivaji.  He told me that yesterday, Dr. Madhu Ghimire’s wife Cynthiya (Sp.?) met Dr. Madhu at Bhaktapur Army Camp.  She went there with the Human Rights group.

Meeting day for Dr. Madhu is on Thursday and Saturday of the week.   Now he is suffering from diarrhea. Cynthia gave some medicines to Madhu.

Shivaji said that he is sending Madhu’s CV to you.

FYI, Dr. Madhu’s sister-in-law (Professor of TU) and one brother also were in different jail.  Now they are released yesterday night.

Today, we all are at our home.  There are 18 hour long curfew (2am to 8 pm) for today.  I do not think king will give democracy easily.  But it is too much.   Many people are injured and killed.
Yastai chha.

David Sir and PCN RPCV saathiharu I will contact you if there are any news.

Thank you and regards.

Sincerely,

Anar

Linda has worked up requests for information to the Committee on Human Rights and is willing to follow-up with the International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies once we receive the name of Dr. Madhu's school in the UK.  (I have an updated CV from Anar written by Madhu's daughter and will send that to you, Linda-ji).  I have worked up petitions to ICRC and Doctors Without Borders.  Amy Clark will do the same for Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

We will continue to share information as we receive it.

Aasha garam, Shana

Hi guys

I have three friends/colleagues that are going to intern in Nepal this summer and were looking for a place to stay in Kathmandu. They want to get an apartment (3 bedrooms) ideally somewhere relatively central in Kathmandu. They were also asking about rent costs. Can anyone send contact information for any families you might know of. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks

Yvette,

Tulane has a good program for international students. Emory is excellent as is John Hopkins. GW's program is new but I know a couple people who have gone there. Basically, DC is a good place to be because opportunities to intern. North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Berkley, CA; Michigan. See you soon. Love ya, Lin

Hey Everyone,
Quick question - my bahini is applying for a Masters in Public Health
and asked me whether her TOEFL score was good and what schools to
apply to. I was unable to answer the questions so I thought I would
throw it out there.
Let me know if you have the answer to either question.
Take care
Yvette

Hello all,

I am once again getting put up in DC for an 'orientation'. I'll be in
town from the afternoon of the 15th to the afternoon of the 19th. Is
anyone interested in a) a Nationals game, or b) meeting up for dinner &/or
drinks? As always, you are all welcome to come visit em in the southern
hemisphere to check if the water in the toilet spins the other way.

Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony,

I too will be in D.C. from the 15th to the 17th for a
couple of job interviews. I'll be staying with Shana
and had tentative plans to see Zach and perhaps Linda,
so perhaps we can all meet up for dinner or drinks one
evening.

Hello all,

One of my former classmates from grad school is now working for TEFL
Institute (www.teflinstitute.com). They perform TEFL training
throughout the world, and they're looking for trainers in Nepal. As I
understand it, they're looking for people who have at the minimum had
some type of TEFL training in the past because they would just be
delivering their training package.

If you know of anyone (Nepalis, of course), they can contact: Julia
Robb at jrobb@.... Feel free to pass this message along
to interested individuals, or those that can spread the message.

Cheers,

Tony

ps And yes, it's still in the high 80s here.

I've started looking for position for next year as this gig is up in
June. I've got an application in front of me that wants an address
and phone number for my recent work experience, one of those being
PC/Nepal. What would y'all put down as an address and telephone
number given that the program is suspended?

Cheers,
Tony

A Nepali-speaking translator is needed for some legal social work in
Northern California for a single day of 'work'. Travel and expenses
will be paid, as will a fee. The catch is, the person must *not* be
Nepali.

If you'd be interested or know someone who would be interested, please
let me know ASAP. I'm sending this around to various places.

Best,

scott

hi everyone -

first of all, happy new year!  i haven't seen most of you in ages, and hope you are all happy and doing well.  i'm hanging out in new haven, connecticut, going to grad school for engineering, enjoying married life (since june) and generally having a good time.

by some amazing stroke of luck, a few weeks ago this company i used to work for called me up and asked if i would accompany a research trip to nepal, and so i'm going for a week at the end of january.  i'm bringing a big, empty suitcase with me, so if there is anything you would like me to pick up for you - those coveted gold stars you never did find, bags of fake saffron, khukuris, yak bone knick-knacks, paper cards, pointy slippers, dhaka topi, whatever - just let me know and i'll try to get it.  or if you want messages delivered, i could do that, too.  i'll only be in kathmandu, but that in itself is super-exciting...

i was just thinking that it has been almost five years now since we 194s left san francisco together -- sounds like cause for a reunion, hoina?

take care, saathiharu!

Word, Matt. That sounds like a great idea.

Why don't we agree on a date and location for this summer and then just decide on a location?

How about June 1-3 (Fri-Sun)?

It seems that pretty much everyone is on one coast or another. We can tally heads and then choose a coast accordingly?
