You and your friends are invited to the Fall Peace Corps International Flavors
Partnership fundraising event. It's time for our Latin American International
Dinner on October 23! All the food is prepared by Returned Peace Corps
Volunteers and all the money raised goes to Peace Corps Partnerships.

We start at 6 P.M., with "hora feliz" (BYOB) and our Salsa competition (the
food, not the dance)! Whip up a batch of your favorite salsa to share and
compare! Dinner (BYOB also) is served at 7 P.M.

Cost is $20 with advance reservations, $25 without reservations and everyone
pays at the door.

If you have not already responded to the prior Evite (or deleted it), you can
still attend by RSVP-ing to Janet at janetlaminack@... or 940.312.2060.

Please pass this invitation along to anyone you know who loves good food and an
international evening!

At Carl Youngberg and David McNair's garden
309 N Waterview Dr (Near Coit and Beltline) Richardson, TX 75080. Their phone
number is 972-783-8228.

Everyone

In 10 days we are hosting another International Dinner-Latin American Flavors-and I am asking you to share your gourmet (or everyday) cooking with our guests!

WE NEED COOKS!

Like you know all the money we raise goes to funding Peace Corps Partnerships, and it's a great party.

The Dinner is Saturday October 23, Happy Hour at 6pm and dinner at 7. It will be held at the home of Carl Youngberg and David McNair. Guests pay $20 with reservations and $25 at the door. Cooks attend at no charge.

I am in charge of the kitchen and the food, and I ask that you prepare a dish of your choosing of 15 servings.  It can be a main dish (arroz con pollo, empenadas, bistec, etc), a side dish (beans and rice, rice and beans, yucca, ensalata, sopa etc) or a dessert (Blue Bell and Salvadoran cookies qualifies!).  You all have your favorite foods, or something you ate all the time in-country, or a special feast day dish, with an international flavor you know our guests will be delighted at and enjoy immensely.

So please please think of what you can cook, and email or call me!

WE NEED COOKS!

If you don't have a preferred dish let me know and I'll suggest something.  I also have to be sure we have balance between main, side and dessert so I appreciate your early responses.

Muchas gracias!

Peace Corps volunteer total hits a 40-year high
   Washington Post Staff Writer
 Thursday, October 28, 2010; 10:08 PM

More people are volunteering with the Peace Corps than at any point since 1970, the agency said Thursday as it touted a 13 percent year-to-year increase in head count.

As of Sept. 30, there were 8,655 Peace Corps volunteers working in 77 host countries, up almost 1,000 volunteers from 2009, the agency said. The new total falls short of the 9,000 volunteers who worked with Peace Corps in 59 countries in 1970.

New host countries, extended volunteer stays and the agency's $400 million operating budget - its largest ever- contributed to the jump. The Peace Corps reopened programs in Colombia, Indonesia and Sierra Leone and reopened its suspended program in Madagascar, it said.

The agency's volunteer head count fell to a low of 5,380 in 1982 but climbed steadily through the 1980s. In 1985, Congress set a goal of having 10,000 volunteers in the field by 1992, a mark not yet reached.

The average age of Peace Corps volunteers is 28, but 7 percent are over age 50 (the oldest is 86). Nineteen percent of volunteers are minorities, 60 percent are women and 90 percent hold at least a bachelor's degree.

Education remains the most popular sector of service for volunteers, but others have worked on health and HIV/AIDS prevention, business development, youth development, and environmental and agricultural projects. Volunteers are almost evenly divided across Latin America, Africa and Europe/Asia, the agency said.

"Every day, Peace Corps volunteers strive to make a difference and have improved the lives of millions of people - not just in communities around the world, but also in their local communities in the United States once they return home," said Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams. "This is the legacy of [President John F. Kennedy's] concept of international service, an idea that continues to capture the imagination of thousands of service-minded Americans today."

More than 200,000 Americans have served in 139 countries since Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961. It became an independent federal agency in 1981.

It's a Celebration!

NTPCA, our group of DFW RPCVs, is tremendously excited about the 50th anniversary of Peace Corps next year, and in late March we are having a Gala Celebration!

Dinner, dancing, peace expo, possibly an auction, and we need someone to manage our Public Relations so we're assured of success.

If you have a PR background-WE NEED YOU- and you know what has to happen:  write press releases, manage their timing and release to media outlets, generate attention and public interest in this tremendous accomplishment of Americans serving the world. IMPORTANT:  we will have the support of and access to our local Peace Corps' PR person and network.  And of course this PR work will dovetail with marketing our gala and making it an enjoyable and educational evening.

If you don't have a PR background, but love doing these kind of things you could be the person we need!

So PLEASE call or send me an email to put your skills and energy into this very cool time and event.

Thank you!

One of our long term NTPCA members is Allen Mondell, RPCV Sierra Leone 1963-65. He is a life-long, highly regarded documentary filmmaker and currently is working on a documentary about the Peace Corps experience, with a goal of showing it next year during the 50th Peace Corps anniversary celebrations.

A perfect opportunity for you to talk with him and share your experience is at our Christmas Party Dec. 11.  Allen will be there and will welcome time with you. See his message below, and if you can bring your writings etc to the party!

I want to include letters, journals/diaries and blogs
(or articles written for a magazine or newspaper) that were written while we were in our host countries. The writing should be honest, personal, revealing and surprising. It  should provide impressions of life in your community, a life-changing event, turning point, dramatic situation, or adventure. They don’t all have to be serious; humor is welcome. I also want it to be about people trying  to cope with the day-to-day problems of living in a foreign culture.
Please consider ten pieces of writing unless you feel you want to send more.
If you have photographs, drawings, and any footage shot on both film and videotape, I’d also like to know about these.
My website is www.mediaprojects.org-contact me at allen@mediaprojects.org. If you think a conversation would be helpful, please give me a convenient time to call. Thank you.

All the best,
Allen

I will be tutoring a citizenship class in January in conjunction with Catholic
Charities. I am looking for resources along the lines of visual aids and video
programs to simplify the content of the course for limited English language
speakers. Topics include basic geography, history and government. (US maps and
world maps, 3-branch government diagrams, TX Congressional districts, native
American tribe info, presidents and timelines--Civil War,WWI, WWII, etc.)
If you have led one of these classes or are a primary or middle school teacher
of history and geography and have any resources you would like to share, please
get in touch. I would like to create a bank to supplement the resources
presently available to the volunteers who lead these classes for immigrants and

TX Peace Corps annual Christmas Party is tomorrow Saturday December 11 at 6:30 at Gary (Solomon Islands '77-80) and Judy Zimny's home at 3839 Valley Lawn Place in north Dallas.  From Midway and Royal go west on Royal, go right on Rosser (5th street), then left on Valley Lawn (2nd street). Gary's cell 214.649.3637.

This is a pot luck dinner party with BYOB Happy Hour!  So bring your best dish from your home country, or your favoritest Christmas food, or some yummy take-out--no rules or themes! Just bring something and the sideboard will be groaning!

Speaking of food, please also bring some non-perishables for North Texas Food Bank.  Right now there is SO MUCH need, people YOU know may be helped by NTFB, so remember and we'll fill 5 boxes.

Gifts?  We got you covered!  The gorgeous and historic RPCV-Madison 50th Anniversary International Calendar will be available for you to buy!  Each month features one of the original Peace Corps countries, a lovely gift for your friends, family, and boss.  Or yourself! At $10 each they are a perfect value.

Remember, too, that our longtime member and film maker Allen Mondell (Sierra Leone), is making a documentary on the Peace Corps experience, and is asking for your letters, journals, blogs, and articles you wrote while in your host countries.  Your honest, personal, revealing and surprising impressions of life in-country, your coping with daily life in a different culture, could be included in the documentary.  Please root around for these letters, get them back from your family and friends, and bring to the party and talk with Allen.  His website is www.mediaprojects.org.

No party RSVP needed, children, pets and aliens welcome, and we'll see you there! .
